HISTORY OF ROTARY CLUB OF BHUBANESWAR METRO PP Rtn. Dr. Latha Ravindran

Rotary Club of Bhubaneswar Metro has literally entered into its “teens” this year. It was founded on 29th June 2001, with Rtn. Brig. Narayan Nayak as the Charter President. Although the club is still young, what makes it so unique and vibrant is the choicest composition of its members - former defense personnel, civil servants, academicians and entrepreneurs, who bring in their varied expertise into planning and executing the activities of the club. That a vast majority of its members are either MPHF or PHF, holds testimony to Club’s contribution to Rotary International. The emphasis is on discipline, professionalism and ethical values that have been imbibed as culture of the club since its inception.

The Club has been focusing on vulnerable sections of the community, who are socially and economically marginalized, such as persons belonging to the deprived class, children and women. The target areas are slums, leper colony, under-developed villages, schools, and other places of public utility. In addition to community service activities such as health camps, blood donation camps, immunization drives and plantation programmes, the Club has implemented some of the most successful projects and activities. The Club continues to claim the distinction of being one among the most vibrant Clubs in the District. It is apt to conclude by quoting Wilfrid J Wilkinson, RI President 2007-08: “The magic of Rotary is that it allows ordinary people to do extraordinary things.”

Rotary Club of Bhubaneswar Metro ଗ୍ରାମକୁଚାଲ (GaonkuChallo)

In accordance with a decision taken by the RI Dist. 3262, Rotary Club of Bhubaneswar Metro was quick to adopt a village to carry out a number of community need-based activities. Blue print was prepared to chalk out an action plan, which is given below. Introduction

Metro has adopted a village Paikarapur near Bhubaneswar. We have been working in this village for last three years. Some of the activities which have already been carried out by the Club in the village are as follows:

• 2010-11: Establishment of Computer Center • 2011-11: Establishment of Science Laboratory • 2010-11: Enrichment of the Library • 2011-12: Donation of Class room furniture • 2012-13: Donation of ceramic black boards • 2012-13: Drinking Water Project • 2012-13: Formation of RCC

About the Village

• Population: Approximately 6000 • Number of households: Approximately 1000 • Educational facilities: Panchayat High School offering classes up to class X • Distance from the Club: About 20 Kms

Needs of the Village

• Education: Strengthening the School through better facilities like computers, laboratories, library, e-learning, exposition. Physical support in the form of sports facilities, drinking water and toilet facilities for boys and girls.

• Healthcare: The village lacks basic health care facilities. There is a half constructed PHC center but not functional yet.

• Vocational training: As the city encroaches, the people are losing the source of livelihood namely, land. There is a need for providing skills for alternate vocation

• Transport facilities: The village lacks bus service and the villagers face a lot of difficulty in commuting to Bhubaneswar or Jatni

Bhubaneswar Metro will focus on the above areas for uplifting the village.

6

Community Service - on the Lighter Side!

A florist goes to the barber for a haircut and when he goes to pay, the barber says "I can't accept any money, I am doing a community service." The florist is happy and leaves the shop. The next morning when the Barber goes to open his shop, there is a Thank you Card and a dozen roses waiting at his door. A Cop goes for a haircut. He also goes to pay the Barber and the barber replies: "I am Sorry, I cannot accept money from you; I am doing a Community Service". The Cop is happy and leaves the shop. The next morning when the Barber goes to open his shop, there is a Thank you Card and a dozen Donuts waiting at his door. A Greek guy goes for a haircut. He also goes to pay the Barber and the barber replies:"I am Sorry, I cannot accept money from you; I am doing a Community Service". The Greek guy of course is very happy and leaves the shop. The next morning when the Barber goes to open his shop, he finds…………………….. a dozen Greeks waiting for a haircut !!!

Three Cheers to TRF !!!

A doctor, lawyer, and a Rotarian in charge of fundraising all die and arrive at the Pearly Gates about the same time. St. Peter tells them they may each have one thing to take with them to Heaven.

The doctor is first, and asks for $1 million. This is given and proceeds to enter Heaven. The lawyer, not to be outdone, asks for $2 million. "Very well," says St. Peter and opens the gate to Heaven for the lawyer.

Finally it is time for the Rotarian, who had just finished a fundraising project for The Rotary Foundation. St. Peter asks him what he would like to take to Heaven. The fundraiser moves up very close to St. Peter, and in a soft voice asks: "If it's not too much trouble, could I just have the names of those two people who were ahead of me in line?” $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$

MY TRYST WITH LORD YAMA

Lord Yama makes his final call to living beings. At least that is what the Puranas tell us or makes us belief. Since religion is on faith, one has to believe it as we believe in any God or Goddess. We do not have anything to disprove. We have no answer for mighty Tsunami or cyclone in Bay of Bengal or for that matter anywhere in this earth. Since it cannot be explained with any scientific proof, it takes the shape of gospel truth.

I have a peculiar habit from my very childhood. I take everything very seriously. It encompasses to all walks of life. When I do anything I do it with full concentration and faith. Whether it is bad or good, I do not know. Everyone has his own version on it including my near and dear ones. Who is correct or who is incorrect, I cannot say but the end result is that I have suffered on many an occasion including with my tryst with Yama.

One day, I was concentrating and seeing Lord Yama. He appeared with his big moustaches, his favorite weapon in right shoulder and riding his chariot buffalo. His facial expression was business like. He stared at me for sometimes and then spoke in a horse voice, “well why did you call me?”.

I boldly replied that “I want to visit your kingdom. Can you take me there right now? I am eager to see and compare it with what I have read in books of wisdom”.

“What you have read, I do not know but I can describe it to you. The place is called HELL but it is fully well equipped to take care of all types of peoples living in this planet. Each cell is earmarked depending on what type of person the visitor is. The congenial liars are different than the liars who lie for betterment of society. Take the case of Yudhistir of Mahabharat fame who did not deny the death of the elephant- Aswathama. The said character behaved as Aswastama and misused the Brahmastra to wipe out the mankind from this world”.

I was taken aback at his knowledge on Mahabharat. I continued to stare and he disappeared in the same manner he had appeared.

But my desire to visit his empire remained unfulfilled.

I still wish that he should have taken me to his abode.

A man and his ever-nagging wife went on vacation to Jerusalem . While they were there, the wife passed away.

The undertaker told the husband, "You can have her shipped home for $5,000, or you can bury her here, in the Holy Land , for $150."

The man thought about it and told him he would just have her shipped home.

The undertaker asked, "Why would you spend $5,000 to ship your wife home, when it would be wonderful to be buried here and you would spend only $150?"

The man replied, "Long ago a man called Jesus Christ died here, was buried here, and three days later he rose from the dead. I just can't take that chance."

A man with four wives, Died giving Logic of Life.. He loved his fourth wife the most and took a great care of her and gave her the best. He also loved his third wife and always wanted to show her off to his friends. However, he was

always had a fear that she might runaway with some other man.

He loved his second wife too. Whenever he faced some problems, he always turned to his second wife and she would always help him out.

He did not love his first wife though she loved him deeply, was very loyal to him and took great care of him.

One day the man fell very ill and knew that he is going to die soon. He told himself, "I have four wives with me. I will take one of them along with me when I die to keep company in my death."

Thus, he asked the fourth wife to die along with him and keep company. "No way!" she replied and walked away without another word.

He asked his third wife. She said "Life is so good over here. I'm going to remarry when you die". He then asked his second wife. She said "I'm Sorry. I can't help you this time around. At the most I can only accompany you till your grave." By now his heart sank and turned cold.

Then a voice called out: "I'll leave with you. I'll follow you no matter where you go." the man looked up and there was his first wife. She was so skinny, almost like she suffered from malnutrition. Greatly grieved, the man said, "I should have taken much better care of you while I could have!"

Actually, we all have four wives in our lives.

a. The fourth wife is our body. No matter how much time and effort we lavish in making it look good, it'll leave us when we die.

b. The third wife is our possessions, status and wealth. When we die, they go to others. c. The second wife is our family and friends. No matter how close they had been there for us when

we're alive, the furthest they can stay by us is up to the grave. d. The first wife is the our soul, neglected in our pursuit of material wealth and pleasure. It is actually

the only thing that follows us wherever we go.
