Description A trilobular thread forming screw with a machine screw's thread pitch. As each lobe of the screw moves through the pilot holein the nut material, it forms and work hardens the nut thread metal, producing an uninterrupted grain flow.

Applications/ Advantages

For use in drilled, punched or cored holes in ductile metals and punch extruded metals. They provide superior prevailingtorque than can be achieved with most locking screws. Eliminates chips that result from using thread cutting screws. Requires

low drive torque and provides excellent resistance to vibrational loosening. Since these thread rolling screws are casehardened, it is not recommended they be used in die-cast or extruded aluminum or zinc.

Description A metric machine screw is a straight shank fastener with a metric thread pitch designed to go through a hole or nut that is pre-tapped to form a mating thread for the screw.

Applications/Advantages

Machine screws form a fastening superior in strength to spaced thread screws. Metric screws are the type almost exclusively usedin items manufactured in Europe.

MaterialClass 4.8 machine screws shall be made from a carbon steel, partially or fully annealed as required, which conforms to the following

chemical composition-- Carbon: 0.55% maximum; Phosphorus: 0.05% maximum; Sulfur: 0.06% maximum.

Applications/Advantages

Has greater tensile strength than Class 4.6, 4.8 and 5.8 bolts.

Material

Class 8.8 bolts can be made from a carbon steel with additives (such as Boron, Manganese or Chromium) which conforms to thefollowing chemical composition-- Carbon: 0.15-0.40%; Phosphorus: 0.035% maximum; Sulfur: 0.035% maximum. In case of plain

carbon boron alloyed steel with a carbon content of less than 0.25% (ladle analysis), the minimum Manganese content shall be 0.6%

Class 8.8 bolts can be made from a carbon steel which conforms to the following chemical composition-- Carbon: 0.25-0.55%;Phosphorus: 0.035% maximum; Sulfur: 0.035% maximum.

Heat Treatment Class 8.8 bolts shall be heat treated by quenching in a liquid medium from above the transformation temperature and reheating to atempering temperature of 425°C.

Core Hardness For diameters less than or equal to 16mm: Rockwell C22 - 32 (Vickers HV 250 - 320)For diameters greater than 16mm: Rockwell C23 - 34 (Vickers HV 255 - 335)

Incase of plain carbon boron alloyed steel with a carbon content 0f less than 0.25% (ladle analysis), the minimum Manganese content

Class 10.9 bolts can be made from an alloy steel which conforms to the following chemical composition--Carbon: 0.20-0.55%; Phosphorus: 0.035% maximum; Sulfur: 0.035% maximum; and shall contain one or more of the following

Description A cap screw with metric thread pitch, threaded to the head, made from medium carbon steel and heat-treated. Grade-A bolts are thepreferred style for most applications. Grade-B bolts have looser tolerances and can be manufactured in a cold or hot-forging process.

Applications/Advantages

Has greater tensile strength than Class 4.6, 4.8 and 5.8 cap screws. Being threaded to the head makes the part useful for mountingmotors to machinery. They are also used in automotive and truck repair.

Material

Class 8.8 cap screws can be made from a carbon steel with additives (such as Boron, Manganese or Chromium) which conforms to thefollowing chemical composition-- Carbon: 0.15-0.40%; Phosphorus: 0.035% maximum; Sulfur: 0.035% maximum. In case of plain

carbon boron alloyed steel with a carbon content of less than 0.25% (ladle analysis), the minimum Manganese content shall be 0.6%

Class 8.8 cap screws can be made from a carbon steel which conforms to the following chemical composition-- Carbon: 0.25-0.55%;Phosphorus: 0.035% maximum; Sulfur: 0.035% maximum.

Heat Treatment Class 8.8 cap screws shall be heat treated by quenching in a liquid medium from above the transformation temperature and reheating toa tempering temperature of 425°C.

Core Hardness For diameters less than or equal to 16mm: Rockwell C22 - 32 (Vickers HV 250 - 320)For diameters greater than 16mm: Rockwell C23 - 34 (Vickers HV 255 - 335)

Surface Hardness Shall not be more than 30 Vickers points above the measured core hardness on the product

Proof Load For diameters less than or equal to 16mm: 640 N/mm2 minimumFor diameters greater than 16mm: 660 N/mm2 minimum

Incase of plain carbon boron alloyed steel with a carbon content 0f less than 0.25% (ladle analysis), the minimum Manganese content

Class 10.9 cap screws can be made from an alloy steel which conforms to the following chemical composition--Carbon: 0.20-0.55%; Phosphorus: 0.035% maximum; Sulfur: 0.035% maximum; and shall contain one or more of the following

elements: Chromium, Nickel, Molybdenum or Vanadium

Heat Treatment Class 10.9 cap screws shall be heat treated by quenching in oil from above the transformation temperature and reheating to a temperingtemperature of 425°C.

Description A hex nut with metric thread pitch, pre-assembled with a free spinning external tooth lock washer. The locking action is achieved when thenut is tightened against a bearing surface as the teeth of the lock washer dig into it.

Applications/Advantages This is the most popular type of locknut because of its versatility, cost and ease of installation. Doesn't gall screw threads.

of the screw when it is subjected to vibration. The nylon insert comes in various colors.

Applications/Advantages

Class 8 metric nylon insert lock nuts are to be used with screw of a Class 8.8 or less. It is able to be reused more times than a two-way reversible nut. It is less expensive than a Grade-C automation lock nut. Nylon insert lock nuts are designed for use in

temperatures from -73°C to +120°C.

Description A nut with a metric thread pitch and two wings protruding 180° from each other which allows the part to be manually turned.

Applications/Advantages

Wing nuts are used when a part is frequently assembled and disassembled at a place where torque greater than that achieved withfinger pressure is not needed. The malleable style nut has been the most common type wing nut used in Europe for many years.

Applications/Advantages

Washers are for assembly around a bolt or screw, between thebearing surface of the fastener and the part to which it is attached.Flat washers are used to improve stress distribution, and to spanlarge clearance holes. The small outside diameter variety is used

in applications with limited clearance areas on the bearing surface.Class 140 HV & Class 200 HV metric washers meet the majority

of industrial applications in manufacturing, maintenance andrepair.

Class 300 HV metric washers are best suited for use with through-hardened cap-screws, bolts and nuts.

Washers are for assembly around a bolt or screw, between thebearing surface of the fastener and the part to which it is attached.Flat washers are used to improve stress distribution, and to span

large clearance holes. The small outside diameter variety is used inapplications with limited clearance areas on the bearing surface.

Description An externally threaded fastener with metric threads, a cylindrical head with a flat chamfered top surface, knurled cylindrical sides andhexagonal recess, made from alloy steel.

Applications/Advantages

Class 12.9 socket cap screws are comparable, but not exactly equivalent to U.S. alloy steel socket cap screws. Ideal for precision assemblywork with close tolerances and applications needing a well-tooled appearance. Supplies greater tensile strength than equivalent sizes of

Class 8.8 or 10.9 hex head cap screws while requiring less surface area or conterbore since the fastener is internally wrenched.

MaterialClass 12.9 socket cap screws shall be made from an alloy steel which conforms to the following chemical composition requirements--

Carbon: 0.20-0.50%; Phosphorous: 0.035% maximum; Sulfur: 0.035% maximum; and one or more of chromium, nickel, molybdenum orvanadium.

Heat Treatment Class 12.9 socket cap screws shall be heat treated by quenching in oil from above the transformation temperature and reheating to atempering temperature of 380°C minimum.

Applications/Advantages

Used when a flush mounting, high strength screw is required. Commonly used in tools and dies where moving parts pass over thefastened area.

Description A headless screw threaded the entire length with a metric thread pitch. It has a sharp conical-shaped point at the opposite end fromthe hexagonal drive.

Applications/Advantages

Cone point set screws are for permanent setting on soft or hardened shafts. The deep penetration it offers gives this style set screwthe highest torsional & axial holding power. Can also be used as a pivot or hanger.

MaterialMetric socket set screws shall be made from an alloy steel which conforms to the following chemical composition requirements--

Carbon: 0.19-0.50%; Phosphorous: 0.05% maximum; Sulfur: 0.05% maximum; Lead: 0.35% maximum. Set screws shall also containone or more of these following elements: chromium, nickel, molybdenum, vanadium or boron.

Heat Treatment Metric socket set screws shall be heat treated by quenching in oil from above the transformation temperature and then tempered byreheating to meet the hardness requirements listed below.

Torsional Strength Metric socket set screws of a sufficient length to be tested (as listed in the above table) shall withstand application of the test torquespecified in said table without evidence of the socket reaming or the screw bursting.

Description A headless screw threaded the entire length with a metric thread pitch. It has a flat surface at the end opposite that of the hexagonaldrive.

Applications/Advantages

Flat point set screws are designed for frequent resetting or relocating on hard steel shafts and where minimal damage to shafts is aconcern.

MaterialMetric socket set screws shall be made from an alloy steel which conforms to the following chemical composition requirements--

Carbon: 0.19-0.50%; Phosphorous: 0.05% maximum; Sulfur: 0.05% maximum; Lead: 0.35% maximum. Set screws shall also containone or more of these following elements: chromium, nickel, molybdenum, vanadium or boron.

Heat Treatment Metric socket set screws shall be heat treated by quenching in oil from above the transformation temperature and then tempered byreheating to meet the hardness requirements listed below.

Hardness Rockwell HRC 45 - 53 (Vickers HV 450 - 560)

Torsional Strength Metric socket set screws of a sufficient length to be tested (as listed in the above table) shall withstand application of the test torquespecified in said table without evidence of the socket reaming or the screw bursting.

Plating Metric socket set screws are usually supplied with a thermal black finish.

The cup point is the most popular type of set screw, designed for fast, permanent and semi-permanent location of parts on shafts withhardness differential of 10-15 Rockwell C points and where cutting in of cup edge on the shaft is acceptable.

Applications/Advantages

Class 12.9 socket shoulder screws are comparable, but not exactly equivalent to U.S. alloy steel socket cap screws. Intended forrotation or sliding applications such as pulley shafts, in punch and die work, or for use as a bearing pin.

Description Has a similar thread design as a metric socket cap screw but is fully threaded to the head. The dome shaped head is wider and has alower profile than a socket cap screw.

Applications/Advantages

Used when a wider bearing surface or a smoother, more finished appearance is desired, or in material too thin to accomodate acountersunk head. Button head cap screws do not afford the strength of socket head cap screws and are designed for light fastening

applications.

Class 10.9 button head cap screws may be made from a carbon steel, which conforms to the following chemical compositionrequirements-- Carbon: 0.25-0.55%; Phosphorous: 0.035% maximum; Sulfur: 0.035% maximum.

Class 10.9 button head cap screws may be made from a carbon steel with additives such as Boron, Manganese or Chromium whichconforms to the following chemical composition requirements--

Carbon: 0.20-0.55%; Phosphorous: 0.035% maximum; Sulfur: 0.035% maximum.

Class 10.9 button head cap screws may be made from an alloy steel which contains one or more of the following: Chromium, Nickel,Molybdenum or Vanadium; and conforms to the following chemical composition requirements--
