OUTLOOK
“Gas hydrates—ice-like compounds containing methane—may become a significant energy resource if ways can be found to exploit them.
Although many countries and organizations are finding gas hydrates plentiful and widespread, the problem remains as to how to produce methane from them safely, efficiently and economically.”
Schlumberger, 2010

POSSIBLE METHODS TO PRODUCE GAS FROM GAS HYDRATES• Reduce the pressure in the reservoir below the hydrate-
equilibrium pressure
• Increase temperature above the hydrate-equilibrium temperature
• Inject chemicals into the hydrated layer that will cause dissociation
• Hydrates mining

DEPRESSURIZATION OF GAS HYDRATES
Source: PATENT WO IB20060036
“A method and system for the
production of a gas hydrate including
the steps of drilling into a subterranean
gas hydrate formation and at least
partially depressurizing the gas hydrate
formation to permit separation of gas
and water from the hydrate form. The
gas and water is then pumped from the
formation and recovered from the well.
At least a portion of water pumped from
the well is water that is introduced into
the well from the surface or
reintroduced by a feed back loop from
the production operation.”

OFFICIAL RESULTS“As the result, it was proven that the depressurization method is able to dissociate methane hydrate more efficiently.
Therefore, it is planned to apply the depressurization method to this offshore production test as well.”

“The Mallik tests successfully demonstrated a field-scale proof-of-concept for gas production from hydrates by depressurization using conventional oilfield technologies adapted for arctic conditions.”

CONCLUSION• There are several possible methods of gas production
from gas hydrates
• All of them are energy-intensive methods
• “it was proven that the depressurization method is able to dissociate methane hydrate more efficiently.”
