43.40.Ph METHOD OF THREE-COMPONENT REFLECTION SEISMOLOGY
Steve H. Danbom, assignor to Conoco, Incorporated 8 November 1988 (Class 367/53); filed 18 March 1985
Vertical, radial, and transverse particle movement is detected at plural spaced positions along a survey line to produce orthogonal data signals. These are variously processed, and the method is said to improve indication and identification of steeply dipping refiections.--SAC

43.40.Yq NON-LINEAR ELECTROMAGNETIC VIBRATION DEVICE
Cao P. Sheng, Shanghai, China 7 June 1988 (Class 310/15); filed in China 1 April 1985
This patent pertains to a shaker for use on vibratory conveyers and the like. A mass that is free to move only along one axis is confined between two springs attached at the other ends to a housing. The mass is made to oscillate at the system's resonance by electromagnetic means. The springs consist of stacks of corrugated plates, the number of which can be selected to obtain a desired resonance frequency. The springs' nonlinearity is intended to keep the system's resonance essentially independent of the mass' amplitude.-- EEU

43.40.Ph NONDESTRUCTIVE DOWNHOLE SEISMIC SOURCE AND PROCESSES OF UTILIZING THE
VIBRATOR TO OBTAIN INFORMATION ABOUT GEOLOGIC FORMATIONS
Bjorn N. P. Paulsson, assignor to Chevron Research Corporation 8 November 1988 {Class 367/57); filed 15 October 1987
A nondestructive downhole seismic source, capable of generating SV waves, SH waves, and P waves alone or in combination, is described. Pro- cesses are described for performing crosswell tomography and reverse seis- mic vertical seismic profiling wherein the detectors are on the surface and the source downhole.--SAC

43.40.Yq APPARATUS AND METHOD FOR DETERMINING THE VlSCOELASTIClTY OF LIQUIDS
J. Vincent Fitzgerald et al., assignors to National Metal and Refining Company
5 July 1988 {Class 73/54}; filed 17 March 1987
The tip of a transducer is immersed in the test liquid and is driven at the system's resonance frequency. A control system maintains the amplitude at a constant, predetermined value. The fiuid's properties are deduced from the power the transducer requires to maintain the amplitude and from the shift in the resonance frequency from that obtained with the transducer tip immersed in a reference fiuid.--EEU

43.40.Vn VIBRATION CONTROL APPARATUS FOR VEHICLES
Isao Okamoto et aL, assignors to Japanese National Railways and Hitachi Limited
24 May 1988 {Class 280/707}; filed in Japan 29 January 1986
This apparatus is intended to suppress the lateral vibrations of rail vehicles. It consists of a hydraulic actuator that is connected between the vehicle's body and its truck, in parallel with ordinary springs and dampers, with the actuator's output determined by a controller acting on a signal from an accelerometer mounted on the car body.--EEU

43.40.Yq SHOCK WAVE SENSOR
Gerold Heine and Joachim Stark, assignors to Dornier System GmbH 12 July 1988 (Class 73/632); filed in the Federal Republic of Germany
17 October 1984
This transducer for measuring the pressure associated with a shock wave, such as that from an explosion, consists of a tubular conductor (which serves as an outer shell), a central axial conductor, and a piezoelec- tric foil between them. The foil is wrapped into the shape of a concentric tube, isolated from the conductors by tubes of a suitable material, and con- nected to the conductors by flexible wires.--EEU

43.40.Vn PARAMETRICALLY CONTROLLED ACTIVE
VIBRATION ISOLATION SYSTEM
Dale W. Schubert, assignor to Barry Wright Corporation 19 July 1988 {Class 267/136); filed 6 October 1987
A hydraulic actuator supporting a load is controlled on the basis of signals derived from response sensors so as to provide high damping at the system's resonance, and low damping (and, therefore, better isolation than classical viscous dampers) at higher frequencies.--EEU

43.40.Yq APPARATUS AND METHOD FOR MEASURING VIBRATION OF A ROTATING MEMBER
John F. Wolfinger and Abraham S. Assa, assignors to General Electric Company
19 July 1988 {Class 73/660); filed 25 November 1986
Vibrations of a member such as a turbine blade that occupies only a portion of the circumference of a rotor are sensed by a series of conductors positioned on the stator, with each conductor extending along only a por-
