Evan Rogers- Church under the Bridge Midland Evan Rogers has always had a passion for the homeless, but it was the preventable death of a friend in January 2013 that made him spring into action. This was the beginning of Church under the Bridge Midland. Evan is a Midland High graduate and active member at Stonegate Fellowship Church. Since leaving his professional position in banking and assuming the ministry as his full-time job, Rogers said no week is the same. “It’s getting a call at midnight that someone’s been beaten up and needs help. You go get them, get them a room, get them cleaned up and some medical attention, if necessary,” Rogers said. “Other days, it’s taking someone to lunch, picking up their prescriptions or helping them with their resume.”

Last month, we got the opportunity to pray over uniforms that were going to kids that can't afford school uniforms. That was some-thing that really touched me for so many different reasons. I prayed over 3 different stacks of uniforms. I walked into the room with all of the uniforms, expecting to be completely calm and ready to pray over them. As soon as I touched the first pair of uniforms, I realized how important this one prayer was go-ing to be to the kids who get those uniforms. I felt myself starting to tear up and then I remembered what Denise told me once. She said that when you pray with your palms face up you are ready to accept whatever God has to offer you. So I picked up the uniforms and I held them with my palms faced up so that way the kids who get those uni-forms get whatever God is willing to give them. I prayed for those kids to have God within their lives everyday because you never know what those kids have to go through everyday, and whatever God sends them, I hope that those uniforms change each and every one of the kids' lives. Whether it is accepting God into their lives or getting to go to school with new uniforms, those kids will be changed forever. The reason it was so important to me was because I feel like I am capable of bringing God into these kids' lives, no matter how far away they are from where I am. I feel like I'm making a huge impact on someone's life. I am so grateful I got to pray over those uniforms; it made a huge impact on my life and I will never forget that night.

Upcoming events at St. Luke’s

Dear St. Luke’s, It has been an amazing experience to receive so many cards of sympathy from our many friends at St. Luke's. I did not realize that while reading each one I would be finding more peace of mind and love. We had been so happy in our church relationships so each card has been a very special gift. We have missed being in the congregation for these last few years. I thank each of you for your thoughtfulness. Louise Christianson

Blessing Bags On Mission Sunday, September 4, SLY packed 250 blessing bags. Each contains toiletries, a snack, a re-usable bag, and a list of service agencies in Midland. The bags may be purchased for $10 each, and kept in your car for the next time you see someone in need of help. They would also be perfect for when you are traveling, and know that you’ll meet those in need at your destination. Bags are available at the front desk. Please buy as many as you can, and let’s spread the blessings!

Cuba has one of the fastest growing Methodist churches in the Caribbean. We can learn much from our neighbors from the south. Since relations between the USA and Cuba have opened up for more travel and contact, we want to learn more about the Cuban culture and their religious experiences. The Cuban church has quadrupled in growth over the last 15 years with the average age of clergy to be 30 years. This trip will be a mission-focused trip with the purpose of learning more about the Cuban culture and experience. We owe a great deal of thanks to our Cuban and Hispanic pastors for the excellent work that is currently going on in the Northwest Texas Conference. We want to hear their perspectives on their life in Cuba. The cabinet and I will be hosting the trip in the fall of 2017 for laity and clergy of both the New Mexico and Northwest Texas conferences. Because of needed hotel accommodations, it will be a cruise out of Miami, Florida. If you’re serious in your desire to immerse yourself in another culture, this is your invitation to join us in the fall of 2017 for a spiritual journey to Cuba!
