The Eco-Challenge RaceDo you know the names of any famous races?

Do you watch any of them on TV?

ABOUT THE RACEThe Eco-Challenge adventure race started in 1995.

You can read more about it on the Internet.

The Eco-Challenge Race takes place once a year, usuallyin a different country each year. There are four people ineach team, and the teams come from all over the world. The race is about 500 kilometres long.

The competitors travel for six to 12 days, sometimesfor 24 hours a day, so they don’t get much sleep. Theywalk through rainforests. They ride horses across thedesert. They travel across the sea. They go up mountainson mountain bikes. They go down rivers and across lakes.

The natural environment is very important in theEco-Challenge. The teams must not put their tents ontop of plants and they must not leave any rubbish. Before the race the competitors do something to helpthe local people. For example, in Morocco, they cleanedthe beaches. In Fiji, they collected books for localschools. In the US, they worked in a children’s park.

The race is always exciting and it is always very, veryhard. When it took place in Canada, 70 teams startedand only 14 finished.
