Dear L.A. Community,

Happy New Year! How did you celebrate Christmas? Some of you might have seen the Christmas lighting and done the countdown at the Victoria Harbour with your loved ones. Our school had also held a series of Christmas celebration activities for our students to enjoy.

I wish all of you did enjoy the L.A. Christmas celebration to the full. Our music group students, led by Mr. Nicholas CHING and Mr. Kevin SUNG, prepared the Christmas concert since the beginning of the school semester. Thanks for their wonderful efforts to bring a fantastic night!

After the long holidays, we all have to prepare ourselves for the coming year, es-pecially for our secondary students who are going to undertake their assessments in February. Many of you may have started the revision, and I hope all of you can strive for the best in the process of learning, and discover the treasure which belongs to each of you.

2015 is another year of challenges. We endeavour to create a better learning envi-ronment for our L.A. learners. Let’s work together to fulfill our dream!

School NewsSingapore Y-Sparks International Fencing Cup 201413, 14 Dec 2014

The annual Y-Sparks International Fencing Cup has taken place in Singapore on 13 and 14 December 2014. Our students, Danielle WONG (5MM) and Douglas WONG (3GL), took part in the competition and gained pre-cious experience from the event.

Apart from participating in the Fencing Cup, Danielle and Douglas can learned fencing skills from others and communicate with competitors from different parts of the world. This is a great opportunity to think out of the box and to learn outside classroom.

Congratulations to Danielle who won the GOLD for Under 10 Women Foil Competition and BRONZE for Under 10 Mixed EPEE Competition!

Our annual event – L.A. Sports Days – were held on 8, 9 December 2014 at Yuen Long Stadium. Thanks to the great efforts from all Houses and student participants, we could hear the loud cheering at almost every corner of the field.

Both primary and secondary students tried their best to get excellent results and they gave a wonderful performance. It is a great opportunity for them to shine. The cheerful atmosphere was fully filled up with the well roundedness of our L.A. members throughout various kinds of field and track events.

This year, congratulations to the House winners – Shiraz! They channeled significant efforts on the sports events and their achievements are much appreciated!

The team, Vine PROS, is responsible for video making and clipping of any school events. They have practised the tech-nique for a period of time and this time, Sports Days pro-vided them the first opportunity to showcase their efforts. As the School will be holding more activities in the future, you may see them holding the cameras around the cam-pus! We shall give them some verbal encouragement for their dedication to great projects!

School ActivitiesChristmas Connections (Primary)16 Dec 2014

Our little L.A. members couldn’t wait to celebrate the joyful Christmas with their lovely peers! This year the Christmas celebration has been divided into two sections, and the theme of the primary section was ‘Christmas Connec-tions’. Students enjoyed the delightful and joyous moments together with their classmates in the School Hall. Class-based performances were shown and our L.A. primary levels had much fun throughout their participation. It was a great moment for them to share joyfulness and to relax in the midst of festive mood!

The performances were based on various themes, including the meaning of Christmas, Christmas celebrations around the world, and the ‘gifts’ we re-ceived from Christmas. We could see the creativity of our L.A. little learners and their great efforts in the preparation of performances! Well done!

School ActivitiesChristmas Concerts 2014-1519 Dec 2014

To share the Christmas spirit with all members of the L.A. community, our music groups - L.A. Children’s Choir, L.A. Singers, L.A. Sinfonietta along with our DSE Choir had put together a performance for both stu-dents and parents to enjoy. The success of the whole music team was depended upon their preparation led by our music teachers, Mr. Nicholas CHING and Mr. Kevin SUNG.

Many parents joined us in the evening session with their children to enjoy the night. Passionate applause from parents were followed after every splendid music masterpiece. It meant a lot to our performers!

Lastly, Horace IP, a member of the L.A. Sinfonietta, led our music team as the conductor to perform ‘A Clare Benediction’, organised by Mr. Nicholas CHING. Under the festive and joyous atmosphere, both stu-dents and parents left with the gift of happiness and we hoped that they could share the festival joy with others too!

Our L.A. ambassadors, led by Ms. Elaine LEE, had devoted much of their efforts in preparing some deli-cious deserts for our guests in the Christmas con-cert. Serving one another is one of the great virtues we value a lot!

Mr. CHING would like to take this opportunity to thank Mr. Ken CHINN for designing the booklet. Many of us appreciated the graphics very much!

Year 7 Admissions Seminar 2015-164 Dec 2014

To help parents further understand the secondary school programs offered in our school, an admissions seminar was held on 4 December 2014 in the Assembly Hall. We welcomed par-ents from different districts to the seminar in order to help them familiarize with our school’s secondary curriculum. The seminar focused on the concept of ‘Dual Exits’, HKDSE and IBDP, in our school, and the structure of teaching, including students’ learning space and the assess-ment methods.

A Q&A session was held at the end of the seminar. We can see the active participation of par-ents who wish to know more about our school. As educators, we also strive to provide a har-monious, safe, and at the same time, knowledgeable learning environment for our L.A. learners!

Seminar/Workshop/TrainingYear 10 & 11 Students’ Study Pathways Seminar3 Dec 2014

As our Year 10 and 11 students are taking either HKDSE or IB approach to prepare for the public examinations in the near future, the School held a Study Pathways Semi-nar for both students and parents. The seminar addressed on diverse options of higher education, both locally and abroad, as well as the procedures and requirements for university applications in Hong Kong, Australia, Canada, the United Kingdom and the United States.

We also expressed our deep concerns on students’ mental health. Thus, our school social worker, Mr. Terence CHENG, introduced various methods to cope with students’ anxiety and stress while facing the public exams. We all hope that the ‘3R’ – Rest, Re-lease, Relax – can help our students to face their future challenges!

Health AlertIssue 4 December 2014

By the Health Centre of Lutheran Academy

•Grade IGrade I ankle sprains cause stretching of the ligament. Pain and swelling are the common symptoms.

•Grade IIGrade II ankle sprains are partial tearing of the ligament. There is significant swelling and bruising caused by bleeding under the skin. Patients usually have pain with walking.

•Grade IIIGrade III ankle sprains are complete tears of the ligament. The ankle is painful, and walking can be difficult. Patients may complain of instability, or a giving-way sensation in the ankle joint.

When to See a Doctor?

If you have the below symptoms after your injury, you should seek medical attention.

•Inability to walk on the ankle•Significant swelling•Symptoms that persist beyond a few days•Persistent pain

•Ice – Apply ice wrapped in a damp towel for 20 minutes every 2-3 hours in the first 48 to 72 hours after the injury. To avoid a cold burn, do not allow the ice to touch your skin directly and do not apply ice while you are asleep.

•Compression – Compress the injured area with an elastic bandage to limit any swelling and movement. To prevent blood flow restriction, do not wrap around the affected area too tightly and do not leave the bandage on while you are asleep.

•Elevation – Keep the injured area raised and supported on a pillow to reduce swelling.

Management

1. Physical examination

•Pain, discomfort and tenderness•Swelling and inflammation•Any lumps and bumps not usually present•Bruising or bleeding

The doctor will also assess how much you can move the injured part and whether you can put your weight on it.

2. X-ray

Usually, an X-ray is recommended only if:

•You are unable to put any weight on your ankle•There is tenderness of the bones on your ankle

Diagnosis

Prevention

Ankle Sprain

Usually, ankle sprains are caused by sporting accidents that involve a fall or a collision.

Here are a few things that you should bear in mind to prevent ankle sprains.

1. Regular exercise can make your joints and muscles stronger and more flexible, which means they are less likely to become injured.

2. Warming up before exercise helps loosen your muscles and increases your range of joint movement, thereby lowering the risk of an ankle injury.

3. Muscles play an important role in supporting your joints. Therefore, if you want to avoid an injury, avoid exercising when your muscles are tired.

•Rest – Rest the injured joint and avoid activity for the first 48 to 72 hours after the injury.
