SPRING 2015 It is time to think towards all things Spring: the flowers, the sun and Graduation. Attention Seniors and Masters students, are you planning on Graduating in May? All Graduation applications are due by October 24, 2014 to the Registrar’s office to be considered for Graduation. Schedule a time to meet with your mentor to go over your degree plan and fill out the application. Spring registration is upon us and classes are filling up quickly. Don’t lose out on a course you wanted by waiting until the last minute. Summer Registration has begun as well. Please let Financial Aid know if you are planning on attending in the summer. Dana Dodson Registrar Phone: 317-917-3327 E-Mail: [email protected] Message from the President “A New Martin, A New You!” This is a great slogan for the 2014-2015 academic year at Martin University. However, like many slogans or themes it is just as good as the individual decides it will be. The hope is high; the expectations are rising; and the opportunities are blooming, but they are just as good as each student, faculty member, staff member, and administrator wants them to be. The first step toward becoming the New Martin is to know that “We are Martin!” Each student, faculty member, staff member and administrator is Martin University. Are we truly ready to be “new”? I don’t want anyone to verbally answer this question. I want everyone to think about the answer. After you think about the question and your answer to it, I want you to demonstrate your answer through your behavior, actions, and achievements. To make Martin New, we must work harder to acquire the best education; to make Martin New, we must impart knowledge or teach at a higher level of comprehension and understanding; to make Martin New, we must elevate our support services and positive efforts to make everyone successful here; to make Martin New, we must demonstrate a greater level of care, compassion and love for each other; and to truly make Martin New, we must believe in Martin and what it could be for each of us. Message from the President“A New Martin, A New You!” This is a great slogan for the 2014-2015 academic year at Martin University. Martin University supports the Indiana CPA Day of Service!

Martin University students provided invaluable services to the Martindale Brightwood Community by volunteering at the St. Vincent de Paul’s Food Pantry on east 30th Street on Friday, September 26. Students repackaged groceries for distribution, assisted patrons with their groceries and restocked tables. Martin University’s goal is to provide students with opportunities to serve the community using the leadership development skills acquired through Martin’s Service Learning and Leadership curriculum that incorporates the knowledge and skills gained in their respective disciplinary areas.

Participants included Candace Crompton, Dannielle Rhoten, Patrick King, Brandi McNeal, Barbara Allen, Chad Johnson, and activities were coordinated by Jasmound Calloway. Jasmound was instrumental in making this opportunity possible and should be commended for her enthusiastic participation. Jasmound shared “I enjoyed volunteering at St. Vincent’s Food Pantry. A few of the people we were serving as well as the other volunteers stated that it was a blessing to have Martin University there. I really had a great time.”

Martin University is proud of our student body and its history of service to the community. These students embody what is possible when a few determined individuals take the opportunity to reach out to others in need.

Message from the President

Remember, Martin will be just as strong as each of us makes it. It’s time to work harder! It’s time to help others to be better. It’s time to elevate the talk to action and the action to greatness.

John Donne, the English poet and Church of England Cleric, said”…No man is an island, entire of itself, every man is a piece of the continent, a part of the main… any man’s death diminishes me, because I am involved in mankind, and therefore never send to know for whom the bell tolls; it tolls for thee…” Students, faculty, staff, and administrators are all Martin. We are all connected. Our successes elevate us and our failures diminish us. We can be “New”, we can be great, if we believe in each other and work to make it so. The bell of opportunity tolls for each of us, but only our performance will answer the question, are we truly ready to be the “New Martin”.Let’s get busy!

Dr. Mattie Solomon was selected for the Featured Authors Event hosted by Association for the Study of African American Life and History. The event was held in Memphis, TN September 24-26th.

Default Management Prevention

A task force Default Management Task Force (DMTF) was created in May to assess what Martin University can do, as a whole, to help our students stay current in repaying their student loans.

Since the inception of DMTF, presentations were given during summer orientation and fall SSE courses. In class presentations have also been provided in designated classes throughout the semesters.

Martin University has partnered with USA Funds to develop a comprehensive plan for educating and helping our students regarding their student loans.
