It seems like only yesterday that we were welcoming our new Y7 and Y12 students to the school. Both year groups, I must say, have made a fantastic start to the next stage of their educational careers. Also pleasing has been the way that students and staff have, once again, responded to our renewed drive to ‘demand more’ from our learners in the classroom, around the site and during key times of the day, such as assembly and tutor time. Building on the success of last year, we have stepped things up again and this has been welcomed by all members of the school community. Currently, colleagues across the school are engaged in an important and exciting review of our curriculum. The aim of this review is to ensure that the school’s curriculum, and the extra-curricular offer which supports it, help to truly deliver the school’s aim of ensuring that students leave Bow having developed the knowledge, skills and character to ensure that they are career and life ready. As always, there has been much to be excited about in this last half term including: A record number of parents and students visiting our Open Mornings/Evening, signalling the growing popularity of the school A fully subscribed Y7 cohort with full attendance at our Y7 Settling in Evening Sporting success on the Basketball Court, Football Field and in Cross Country A hugely successful Macmillan Coffee Morning A celebration of our partnership with the National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain As I write, Y11 are busy preparing for their first set of mock exams. This crucial fortnight will help them, and their teachers, to identify where to focus their efforts in the coming months, to make even more progress in the lead up to their exams. I wish them every success. Finally, I would like to wish all of our students, staff, parents and partners a restful half-term week. I look forward to returning to school after the break to work with you all to drive the school even further forward. 11 th October 2019 MESSAGE FROM THE HEADTEACHER DANNY LYE

On Saturday 27th July our NYO Young Promoters were invited to the amazing BBC Proms at the Royal Albert Hall for the farewell to our pioneering work with the National Youth Orchestra. We have worked with them for three years now, and it was sad to say goodbye to the young musicians and staff who have brought us so much inspiration over this time. The pupils were treated to a private performance in the Royal Albert Hall overlooking the statue of Prince Albert in Hyde Park. We then got a backstage tour of all the Royal rooms, organ loft and Jazz Café featuring a famous red piano donated by Sir Elton John.

Next the pupils were treated to free Pizza Express where we took over the entire restaurant! At the end of the day there was a spectacular concert by the Orchestra, where we were lucky enough to get front row £50 seats for only £5!

Well done to all the young Promoters this year who have benefited from this unique cultural experience. I hope visiting these historic musical locations will inspire them to revisit, and that they have learnt more about the fascinating world of orchestral music-making and the art of public speaking and events management.

In July 2019, Year 8 pupils worked for the Active Energy Project with some older members of the community and constructed windmill models. They also investigated renewable energy resources. At the commencement of a week of action on climate emergency by school children and workers across the globe, students visited the Olympic Park for the celebration of the Active Energy Project on Friday 20th September 2019. With the growing concerns that climate change brings, pupils learnt about alternative sources of energy and gave a presentation about their findings to explain the effect of the windmill shapes on the amount of electricity produced. Pupils were able to describe why there is a need to consider other sources, how the alternatives work and also how energy production can be maximised. James Hardy, Senior Manager for Energy and Climate Change, Greater London Authority, enlightened the pupils with regards to problems such as global temperature changes and the causes. Pupils then participated inquisitively in the Question and Answer session enabling them to understand more about the solutions to these problems. James Hardy was impressed with their questions about government policies to minimise global warming and responded by explaining The Mayor of London’s plans to counter climate change.

YEAR 10 PHOTOWALK – ART DEPARTMENT MS MCEVOY

Year 10 have just started their coursework title ‘REFLECTION’. As a way of introducing the project and developing their photographic recording skills, we took them on a walk of the local area.

Although it has been a week of torrential rainfall, we were lucky that the rain clouds cleared and the sun came out enabling the students to take dramatic photographs of the local environment. Below are some examples of their photographs.

On Tuesday 8th October our new Year 7 students started their Bow football career. They took on a very good Eastbrook Team in the London Cup.

Both teams played with flair and outstanding work ethic.

After normal time the teams were tied at 3-3. The game had to be decided on the night, so a penalty shoot-out was necessary.

Bow students kept their nerve and came away with a victory!

Congratulations to all the boys involved.

Keep up the good work.
