The Foundation was founded by educationalists and Islamic scholars who believe in the universality of knowledge and that all knowledge is essentially Islamic if it is beneficial.

We are inspired by the fact that our Prophet Muhammad g, was sent as an educator, and it was through education that he transformed society. His educational philosophy was comprehensive and universal. It is therefore our belief that education is the solution of the problems of the world and this Ummah.

Khalil Foundation is an umbrella organisation that oversees many projects and initiatives with an academic orientation. Work is currently under way to register Khalil Foundation as a separate legal entity and a registered Charity. Until this process is completed Ebrahim Community College (Registered Co no: 4740215 and Registered Charity No. 1108141) will be the legal entity responsible for all matters relating to Khalil Foundation.

Message from OurFounders & Trustees

In 2003 a small team of like minded individuals began with a vision to transform Islamic Education by combining the best of the traditional and the modern. The work began with the launch of Ebrahim College as the first institute to run a much improved and revised version of the traditional Islamic Sciences curriculum alongside mainstream subjects and A levels for 6th Formers.

Alhamdulillah, with time, this work has expanded and diversified in to many other areas based on the community’s needs and requests. The different strands of work are now managed by the umbrella organisation Khalil Foundation (KF). This document briefly describes the work of Khalil Foundation.

With the support and du’as of the community and its well-wishers, KF will continue to grow in strength and is planning to expand its services nationwide over the next five years. During this exciting period we want to ensure that we maintain our high standards in the delivery of our services and work towards a financial model that is sustainable for the future. Please support KF in whatever capacity possible and make dua that Allah c grants KF success in its work.

Khalil Foundation - 3

• Allah c orders us to ‘read’ as a general command implying anything beneficial in Allah’s c creation can be the subject of our studies and learning. He then qualifies the general with the words ‘in the name of your Lord,’ telling us that all learning is Islamic if it is inspired by Allah c. Thus this verse inspires a universal educational philosophy at the core of which is the Qur’an, Sunnah and Islamic sciences, but which broadens to all beneficial sciences.

• As inspired by Qur’an 9:122, a strong contingent of people must develop a deep understanding of religion (tafaqquh fiddeen) while everyone has to pursue compulsory learning. Hence we combine ‘specialisation in knowledge’ with ‘propagation of knowledge’.

• In the Islamic Sciences, our methodology is based on traditionalism (asaalah) in what is taught and modernity in how it is taught (mu’aasarah). This ensures that our classical knowledge is preserved yet those studying it are equipped with the skills and nomenclature to apply it in today’s world.

• Every Muslim should study the Arabic language and basic Islamic Sciences as part of their core learning. Then we want them to excel in a field of personal interest whether in the Islamic Sciences or any other field. This will produce philosophers, scientists, doctors, lawyers, and professionals who are inspired by that core learning.

• We value leadership and are driven by an acute awareness of how much it is lacking in our midst. But leadership must have sound knowledge of Islam and Muslims at its core, combined with natural leadership acumen and relevant training. With this in mind, we endeavour to produce tomorrow’s leaders.

• Knowledge is information. True knowledge of the Prophetic model is a marriage of information, wisdom, and purification. Hence we believe that teaching has to be combined with strong pastoral care and exemplary role modelling.

• Through this method we hope to produce leaders who are dedicated to selflessly serving the Ummah and humanity: people of dedication, passion and generosity of spirit.

Ebrahim CollegeEbrahim College (EC) is an institute of higher Islamic learning that aspires to operate as a fully-fledged university complete with a reputable research portfolio. It began in 2003 as a Madrasah and an Islamic 6th Form, which, at the core of its academic offering, combined A levels with a programme called the Islamic Sciences Programme (ISP). Now the College runs an Arabic language programme called ‘The Arabic Intensive’ that fulfils the prerequisites of its undergraduate level programme called the ‘Alimiyyah Programme’. The aim of EC’s core academic curriculum is to produce Ulama and leaders who are competent in the Islamic sciences such as Tafsir and Hadith, and who also possess the professional skills necessary to serve, guide and lead the Muslim community. EC’s overal curriculum is designed to produce specialism and academic excellence on the one hand as well as widely promote and facilitate the study of the Islamic Sciences and elevate the standard of Islamic learning in Muslims of all ages and backgrounds.

Postgraduate StudiesThe Alimiyyah Programme

The Alimiyyah Programme is an undergraduate level programme in Shari’ah (Islamic Law) and Islamic Theology. The programme is an in depth study of subjects such as Tafsir, Hadith, Fiqh and the principles of Tafsir, Hadith and Fiqh. It also includes an advanced study of classical Arabic and courses on history, leadership, politics, and philosophy.

The aim of the Alimiyyah curriculum is to produce Ulama (scholars) and leaders who are competent in the Islamic sciences such as Tafsir and Hadith possessing the professional skills necessary to serve, guide and lead the Muslim community with excellence. In addition to imparting knowledge and skills, the curriculum, and the environment within which it is taught is designed to produce scholars whose scholarship is marked by tradition, intelligence, piety, responsibility, and generosity of spirit, ensuring that we are not simply producing academics and professionals seeking a career but are also reproducing the selfless spirit that has always been so characteristic of Islamic scholarship.

This curriculum has already produced graduates of the highest calibre whose work is already benefiting the community in different capacities. It is our firm belief that EC and its academic system and curriculum are the future for Islamic education and the producing of competent Ulama, Imams and leaders of the future.

EC is also in the process of seeking validation from a British university for the Alimiyyah Programme as an undergraduate degree.

Arabic is a primary prerequisite of the Alimiyyah programme. To ensure applicants on the Alimiyyah Programme meet this prerequisite, EC runs ‘The Arabic Intensive’: a full-time one year course dedicated to teaching the Arabic Language with substantial modules on grammar, Qur’anic Arabic, and modern standard Arabic. The aim is for students to be able to read and understand the Qur’an and hadith, classical Arabic, and participate in a class taught in Arabic.

Along with students who are studying to meet the Arabic prerequisite, a substantial number of students attend the Arabic intensive to avail of the opportunity to learn Arabic in a short period of time. The Arabic Intensive is also offered part time but over two years.

Ebrahim College is one of the pioneers of structured, progression based part time learning in the Muslim community.

As part of its broader commitment to making Islamic learning widely accessible by removing barriers to learning, Ebrahim College has developed a sizeable portfolio of part time courses on the Islamic Sciences and general topics related to Islam all year round. These are programmes, modules and courses that cover different aspects of Islamic studies and the Islamic Sciences. These courses are run in addition to offering the Alimiyyah and Arabic Intensive on a part time basis.

The Qur’an Programme:

Three courses on tajweed, and two on tafsir.

The Fiqh Programme:

Four courses, taught over varying lengths of time.

The Islamic History Programme:

Six courses covering the Seerah, Khulafa Rashidun, and the major Islamic dynasties.

Arabic Language: Nine courses, each taught over 12 weeks.

These courses are also further supplemented by other important courses on topics such as Aqeedah. In addition to the above, short courses and seminars are also run regularly covering a whole topic over a weekend for greater flexibility.

EC is currently in the process of deploying many of these courses to an online platform for greater flexibility and access.

Alhamdulillah, currently over one thousand students enrol on regular part time courses per year with many times more attending seminars and shorter courses.

Khalil Foundation - 7

RashidunRashidun is a supplementary (evening or weekend based) Islamic schooling system for children aiming to provide an Islamic education to children aged 5 and above who are not in full time Islamic education. Khalil Foundation has already established two such schools and aims to establish more where the Muslim community demands them. These ensure that children attending mainstream schools also receive a strong Islamic education. The Rashidun system is more than just a traditional Maktab (mosque-based weekday Qur’an class).

Rashidun aims to:

• Educate children to learn to recite the Qur’an with an excellent standard of Tajweed. • Educate them to learn to appreciate the spirit of key Islamic. practices such as Salah, rather than just their physical motions and rules • Work on character and personality building so that children learn to embody the akhlaq of the Prophet g; • Support them in their school education by encouraging them to do well and looking for ways to give them extra support and raise overall achievement and aspiration; • Make learning enjoyable so that children do not feel burdened and pressured when studying Islam.

The EC Alimiyyah Programme has proven to be an outstanding programme. Our first cohort of students completed the Alimiyyah programme in 2009 and travelled to various seminaries around the world where they achieved excellent results including top places in top institutes.

This cohort graduated in 2010. They are a testament to our work and the success of the Alimiyyah Programme. They are now working in different capacities at EC and elsewhere: in teaching, in da’wa and working as competent imams.

Many groups of students have completed their A levels at the EC 6th Form and have gone on to university to do their degrees or to Islamic Seminaries to study the Islamic Sciences at higher levels. In the 9 years since EC’s inception, close to seven thousand students have studied our courses in full and part time capacities.

EC now enrols about a thousand students in our adult Islamic courses every year, close to half of whom are women.

5 Makka Twin Peaks Challenge (MTPC) and WingWalkers retreat: This is an annual fundraising trek with umrah in which participants from the community take a sponsored trek up mounts Noor and Thawr in Makka. The trip is an annual event and has had over 500 participants over 6 years and £250k raised. In addition to the fundraising activity, MTPC has changed the lives of many people and continues to do so each year. In 2012, it also included an educational retreat in which students formally study a course in Makkah and Madinah. This was also a resounding success.

Ebrahim Academy has already produced its first hafiz of the Qur’an. Others are soon to follow. The school continues to grow towards becoming an outstanding school with its first GCSE results due in 2013/14.

In Ramadhan 2011, Khalil Foundation launched Islamique Magazine, dedicated to Islamic lifestyle, knowledge and information. It is a quarterly magazine printed and distributed free in the local community and electronically circulated to a wider audience. It has its own dedicated website and has taken off as a popular publication.

Khalil Foundation has made it its mission to remove gender as a barrier to learning. For too long, our women have suffered from unprecedented barriers against studying Islam. When opportunities are offered, their studies are of a lower standard than what the men get. We have been equally offering our part time courses to women since our inception in 2003. Then in 2011, we took the decision to also offer our full time programmes to women after taking major decisions about future growth and development. Now the community can look forward to competent scholars of Islam and leaders among men and women.

In a consultative capacity, EC has inspired change and development in Islamic studies curricula across the UK and other Western countries and has proven that a new approach can be successful. Its work and approach is often mentioned and acknowledged in reports and studies on Islamic education as a balanced model combining the best of seminary based and modern learning and pedagogy. This has now become the impetus for many other organisations to consider similar models and developmental steps.

As a community who takes pride in its history, heritage and identity, we need to do significantly more to make sure all of our children are educated so that their faith and culture is not only preserved but is also positively contributing to society. Khalil Foundation is committed to identifying community needs and working hard to fulfil those needs. Thus the organisation is committed to constantly developing qualitatively and in terms of its growth. It is an ambitious organisation firm in the belief that if our resolve is based on reliance on Allah c then every goal is definitely achievable. With this mind-set, KF has launched its strategic plan for the years 2013- 2018. The strategy has 3 stages:

Short Term - Rationalise

This stage involves consolidating our current position and setting ourselves up for growth by ensuring the following:

• Governance & quality• Supporting systems• Source the best and invest • Curriculum & content• Secure our profile

Medium Term - Realise

With a strong foundation from the ‘rationalise’ stage, this will be the start of strong growth and will involve the following:

• Operational viability secured• Substantial growth & critical mass• Academic & publishing profile• Substantial community Impact • Nationwide network & output

Long Term - Revolutionise

At this stage, KF becomes a major education provider manifesting itself through the following:

The Importance of Philanthropy

The actual cost of learning is never covered by fees charged. This is rarely the case in mainstream education and will never be the case in Islamic Education. Yet, while we feel tuition rates need to be kept affordable so learning is accessible by all, we cannot accept compromise in quality of teaching, services and output. This is where you come in.

We have to support education because we are its ultimate beneficiaries. Education supports the Ummah locally and globally. This affects us, our children, and our future generations. To keep the edge in Islamic education, KF depends on contributions from alumni, parents, community friends, and other well-wishers to support our work and to ensure its development and growth. Philanthropic support combined with networking and volunteer activities create the KF and EC that can prepare the scholars, leaders and community that we need.

It’s all Sadaqah Jariyah... The beauty of Sadaqa Jariyah is that you will receive its reward perpetually for as long as people benefit from your giving. The Prophet g said: “When a man passes away, his good deeds will also come to an end except for three things: Sadaqah Jariyah (perpetual charity); beneficial knowledge, or a virtuous descendant who prays for him (for the deceased)” Narrated by Muslim

Therefore multiply your deeds even further by giving to one of our unique schemes. Help KF deliver its vision to see “a world educated in how best to serve Allah and His creation”.

You can support us by contributing towards the following schemes:

1. Campus Development o Purchase of 80-82 Greenfield Road o Campus Redevelopment o Maintenance Endowment2. Student Scholarships o Mus’ab ibn Umair Fund o Full Studentships for the Gifted and Talented3. Faculty Seats4. Research and Publications

Full details of each can be obtained separately.
