Message from Monshu

We recently received a calligraphy from the 25th Head Priest of Honpa Hongwanji in Kyoto. The scroll was accompanied with a translation of the calligraphy as well as an official photo of the 25th Monshu. I remember a scroll that hung at the student dormitory of the Institute of Buddhist Studies where I lived while at the Hongwanji seminary. That scroll was created by our current Monshuʻs relative; perhaps a great grandfather or great great grandfather. As I learned about the content of that scroll, I was made to feel the depth of message con-tained within the calligraphy. The scroll in Berkeley has been the content of previous messages on cultivating harmony within a Sangha. That calligraphy read, Roku Wa Kyo. It points to the six acts of respect and harmony; a message that is timeless. As compelling as the Berkeley scroll has been for me, the calligraphy by our Monshu is as dynamic. It may

seem to be just mere images on paper, yet within the calligraphy lies the heart and hope of our faith. It reads, Jishin Kyo Ninshin, a dynamic and central concept of Jodo Shinshu. It means to “secure oneʻs own entrusting heart to the Dharma, guiding others to the same path.” Thus, giving purpose and energy to our limited life.

President’s Corner Aloha Members and Friends, Thank you very much for attending our first Minister’s coffee hour that was held on April 22nd. If you missed the coffee hour, you will have an opportunity to participate as we will try to host the coffee hour quarterly throughout the year. Please check future newsletters or Mililani Hongwanji’s website for the next coffee hour.

On May 17th, Mililani Hongwanji will be hosting the Oa-hu Lay Association meeting and it will be a good opportunity to hear the various items being discussed amongst our Oahu District lay leaders, including a pending resolution that the Oahu Lay Association may sponsor at the Lay Association State convention. The convention is scheduled during the weekend of Septem-ber 12-13th and information is available on the temple bulletin board and Mililani Hongwanji’s website. Our nomination committee will soon begin to work on the slate of officers and directors for the 2016 Mililani Hongwanji Board of Directors (BOD). To serve on the BOD, you must be a Gojikai member (dues paid/pledged member). If you are interested in serving on the BOD, please contact Mr. Dennis Oshita (committee chairperson) for information. In Gassho.

BWA NEWS On Sunday, April 19, the Mililani BWA celebrated Eshin’ni/Kakushin’ni Day. With a delightful sense of humor, Karen Oda, our MC, introduced Lois Toyama, the speaker for this special service. Lois is presently the 2nd VP of the BWA State Federation and its membership chairperson. She is also VP of the Jikoen BWA. She talked about women who have had an impact on the Hongwanji through time-all the way from Eshin’ni and Kakushin’ni to those who, like Haru Matsuda on the Big Island who came to make Hawai’i her home, all the way to those women of today in our own Mili-lani sangha. How each were/are not only concerned with Buddhism but also with the real life concerns of daily life, and found that all of them could only be “Just as you are… and… Do just as you can.” She closed with a borrowed thought: “Don’t ask what the world needs but what makes you come alive!” Thank you to Lois for her thoughtful presentation. A light lunch following the service allowed everyone time to visit and enjoy one another’s company. Thank you to Nora Hahn, the Program committee and many other members who so graciously provided drinks and refresh-ments for everyone! The 15th World Buddhist Women’s Convention is be-ing held on May 30-31 in Calgary, Canada. Five of our mem-bers are looking forward to attending this convention that brings Buddhist women together from Japan, Brazil, the USA and Canada. Rev. Jan Youth, Nancy Tanaka, Joyce Ogawa, Karen Oda and Carrie Kawamoto will be attending. Reminder from Theo Hirai. Please continue folding

paper origami cranes for Honoka’a.

2015 Bazaar Wrap-Up

On behalf of the Mililani Hongwanji Board of Directors, a big mahalo goes out to the members of the BWA, Jr. YBA, Judo Club and Ki-Aikido Club for their hard work in putting on another successful fund-raiser for their respective organizations. As the parent organization, we are happy that the bazaar pro-vided an opportunity for these affiliated organi-zations to raise funds to promote their future programs and activities, respectively. A big mahalo also goes out to the tem-ple members who came out to help these affili-ated organizations in their fund-raising efforts.

Gotan-E Service

Please join us in celebrating the birthday of Shinran Shonin. Reverend Satoshi Tomioka will be the Go-tan-E Service guest speaker on May 24, 2015. Born in Shimane, south-ern part of Ja-pan, Reverend Tomioka fin-ished studies at Ryukoku University in Kyoto and majored in Intercultural Communication and Shin Buddhism. After that he entered graduate school and received an MA in Litera-ture and Shin Buddhism. In 2013 he was as-signed to the Hawaii Betsuin. It was his long dream to become an overseas minister and he is glad to share the teachings with members in Hawaii. Reverend Tomioka’s favorite hobbies are playing the ukulele, reading books, and playing sports.

Please join us in a First Friday Mindfulness Meditation

at 7:30-8:30 PM Mililani Hongwanji Temple,

What is mindfulness practice? “keep your attention focused on the work, be alert and ready to handle ably and intelligently any situation which may arise” Thich Nhat Hanh, The Miracle of Mindfulness, p. 14. “Mindfulness is our capacity to be fully present in our own lives, to be aware of what we are doing as we are doing it. As we de-velop our awareness, an inner stillness naturally grows. We are better able to embrace the world, better able to respond wisely and lovingly. If we are not mindful, we are split, and disconnect-ed from the life energy that is in us and in the world.” Mitchell Ratner, Dharma Teacher, Still Water Mindfulness Practice Center If you continue this simple practice every day you will obtain some wonderful power. Before you attain it, it is something won-derful, but after you attain it, it is nothing special” Shunryu Suzu-ki, Zen Mind, Beginner’s Mind, p. 43.

*** Our Friday evening will have a guided sitting meditation, a walk-ing meditation and some time for dharma sharing. Ernestine Enomoto, a dharma teacher in the tradition of Thich Nhat Hanh, will be leading these meditations. Anyone with an interest in the practice of mindfulness is welcomed to join the sitting; no experi-ence is necessary. For more information, please contact Mel Hayase at 258-6192.
