    Aloha Kamakahelei Ohana,

Mayor Derek Kawakami declared February as “808 No Vape Month”. The

Food & Drug Administration described the rising teenage use of electronic

cigarettes as an epidemic. FDA Commissioner Scott Gottlieb said, “The dis-

turbing and accelerating trajectory of use we’re seeing in youth and the result-

ing path to addiction must end, it’s simply not tolerable”.

At CKMS and middle schools throughout the state, we are seeing this epidemic

in action. Enticed by the sweet candy and fruit flavored “juice”, 66% of ado-

lescents erroneously believe their e-cigarette liquids contain only flavoring. E-

cigarettes contain nicotine - the addictive drug in regular cigarettes, cigars, and

other tobacco products, which can harm adolescent brain development. The

devices bright colors, and “techy” appearances are also attractive to teens.

Parents are often unaware their child has a device which may resemble a jump

drive or a pen and are easily hidden. E-cigarettes emit a vapor which teens use

to engage in “cloud competitions”, social media abounds with videos of kids doing smoke tricks. Some students are

even using e-cigarettes to smoke cannabis oil.

Please join us with your child on Thursday evening, February 28th at 5:30 PM in the cafeteria to learn more about

electronic cigarettes. Our guest speaker will be Valerie Saiki from the Coalition for a Tobacco-Free Hawaii. A

healthy snack will be provided and ice-pops will be given to the first 100 CKMS students through the door.

CTE FINANCIAL COURSE Mr. Gage would like to congratulate 6th grad-ers Tyler Tumpap, JB Trinidad, and Makoa Kua for placing 1st in the state of Hawaii in the 2018-2019 Stock Market Game. Over the

course of 10 weeks during the fall semester, students in Mr. Gage's CTE Finance class com-peted against 70 other teams across Hawaii, each with a budget of $100,000 that they could invest in stocks on the New York and American stock exchanges and on the Nasdaq

Stock Market. Students watched the per-

formance of their hypothetical investments according to the rise and fall of the actual markets. The Stock Market Game is an oppor-tunity for students to compete to earn the highest return in a real-time stock market simulation. Mr. Gage looks forward to bring-

ing home another 1st place win again next year with all students that have showed they want to succeed with money by enrolling in his CTE Finance course.

    BREAKFAST IN SCHOOL

In Hawaii's public schools, breakfast is offered at all 256 campuses through the

U.S. Department of Agriculture's (USDA) School Breakfast Program. According to

the Food Research and Action Center (FRAC), eating a healthy meal in the morn-

ing enhances students' academic performance, improves their memory, and in-

creases their energy and ability to pay attention in class.

"As a former educator, I have seen how having breakfast plays a critical role in

helping students properly start their day," added First Lady Dawn Amano-Ige. "For

children, as well as adults, it is hard to concentrate on an empty stomach. When

students eat breakfast and receive the proper nutrition, they're happier, ready to

learn and more likely to succeed."

The USDA's breakfast program was established as a way to ensure that children have access to a well-balanced meal every morning before class is in session. For more information about the USDA's School Breakfast Program, click here. https://www.fns.usda.gov/sbp/school-breakfast-program-sbp
