This week, of course, brings a close to our 2017 school year. We have had a very exciting and successful educational year at Maraylya Public School. We want your feedback - SWOT Analysis

Maraylya Public School is a great little school but we want to be more than that. At MPS, we truly want and aim to be the best school for your child and their education in preparation for life beyond these gates in the 21st Century.

In order to achieve this goal, we need your feedback.

We want to know your observations of our strengths, weaknesses, opportunities for improvement and threats to our success. Please complete this survey formand return to school at your earliest convenience. This information is incredibly valuable in terms of our next round of planning. We will then formulate our school plan and communicate our strategic directions early in the new year.

This is in addition to the TTFM survey already collected and an upcoming Survey Monkey being forwarded in the coming weeks.

Thank you for your time in this important endeavor for our school.

Mini Fete

Our Year 6 Mini Fete will take place on Tuesday 12th December at school. For those unfamiliar with the process, our senior students organise a whole school fete event between recess and lunch, supplying and running all of the activites for the rest of the student body. Students prepurchase a book of ten tickets which can be used instead of money at each stall offered. These funds are used towards the Year 6 Farewell Evening and a parting gift to the school. Tickets will go on sale later next week, $7.00 for a book of ten tokens. These tokens when used will go into a prize draw at the end of the day in which students can win a ‘Year 6 Servant’ for a day in the following week. Party Day Notes have gone home regarding party day at the end of the year. Please be advised that costs have been kept to a minimum, with subsidised transport occurring to ease the burden on families. We are looking forward to a really enjoyable end of year celebration.

Helpers’ Morning Tea On Wednesday, we held our Community Helper morning tea. All the teachers would just like to say a final “THANK YOU” for all your help in 2018. The community spirit at Maraylya PS is something we are very proud to be a part of. Thank you for all your time, effort and expertise that you have kindly donated this year to the school, out of your already very busy schedules. There are many ‘jobs’ the community takes on to make our school a very successful, exciting and positive place to be… from P&C, fundraising, canteen, classroom helpers, MULTILIT, dancing, DVD creation, transporting, BBQ-ing… the list is endless.

Kindergarten Orientation We’ve had 3 very successful Kindergarten Orientation sessions for our new students starting school in 2018. Our new Kindy’s have spent time with their teacher, Mrs Mackenzie, meet their Year 6 buddy, got to know their class mates and been had their first introduction to ‘big’ school. They enjoyed using the “paint’ program on the computers to create an artwork, playing with water, creating a ‘magic hat’ and completing activities in the classroom. We are looking forward to our new students joining the wonderful Maraylya PS community!

RED Reading Folders The R.E.D (Read Every Day) reading folders have been introduced to all students in K-2. This folder is a part of your child’s nightly reading homework. By reading with your child as often as you can and asking the provided questions, you will promote and practice fluency and comprehension skills to support their reading journey.

Each night, read the book in your child’s reading folder. This is a book set by the teacher at an appropriate level. Ask 3-4 questions from the list provided. Keep practicing until your child can read the book fluently, then return it to their teacher. Teachers will then listen to your child read and provide a new appropriate book for your child to practice. If the book is too difficult, please return it for another. Teachers want to ENCOURAGE and foster a love of reading in our students.

Safe Respectful Responsible Learners

Wellbeing and PBL (Positive Behaviour for Learning) our students have continued to maintain a positive atmosphere in the playground. Staff are continuing to follow-up on the lessons taught in 2016, asking students to think about what safety, respect and responsibility looks like in particular areas.

Current PBL focus – ‘Back Field’

Students are still reminded of the processes for loaning sports equipment and the appropriate use of this on the back field.

Also, students are reminded about safe play with older/ younger students in organised games and the associated rules of play. Conflict resolution is also highlighted.

We recognise that there will always be small issues amongst students. Please encourage your child to talk to their teacher or principal if they have any concerns in regards to social interactions in the school.

If this is not appropriate, please make contact with the school as soon as possible so smaller issues can be attended to before becoming bigger.

Staff take great time and care in working to ensure that students feel happy and secure at school.

The end of year festivities are fast approaching and Year 1 are tired. Sorry, I really they will grizzle a little at the end. We have continued reading about the Three little pigs. We read the original story,

watched the Disney animation (with music) and read 2 new books. The Real Story of the Three Little Pigs and The Three Little Wolves and the Big Bad Pig. We all really enjoyed the new books but especially enjoyed The Three Little Wolves and the Big Bad Pig. Thank you to everyone who came in to help through the year as a reading helper, covering books and excursions. Your assistance was greatly appreciated. Maths: We have become very clever, practising counting off the decade (7,17,27,etc) all the way past 100 and then counting backwards off the decade. Our maths game this week has been journey to the moon. We roll 2 dice, add together then find that number. Everyone is becoming very confident to add 2 numbers using the ‘Counting On’ strategy. Some of us are even answering worded problems. I will leave with our new class member Guff Glitter. He appeared last Friday and is here from Santa.

What an amazing year class 2/3 have had . They have been a wonderful class and I thoroughly

enjoyed teaching them. They have been inspired by many books we have read in class. One particular book that stood out was 'Tears in the Jungle'. The class took this challenge on to save the orang-utans and make others aware of palm oil and cerebral palsy. Through posters, power point presentations, speeches to the P&C, palm oil free popcorn and a walkathon to name a few. This unit linked into mathematics, geography and visual arts. It all culminated with the class featuring on the Tears in the Jungle website.

Thank you to all the parents for their support and help in all areas this year. Wishing everyone a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

What an amazing year it has been in 3/4! Cannot believe this is the last newsletter for the year!

This week has seen 3/4 finishing off all our units of work, experiments and projects. We have been finishing off our class novel of “George’s Secret Key To The Universe” and have been having deep class discussions about the facts learnt, questions regarding character motives and how Stephen Hawking has added his specialised knowledge about Space to create an exciting narrative. 3/4 conducted their final science experiment where they measured the length and noted the direction of shadows during the day and when the shadows were at their longest or shortest. Ask your child what their findings and results were – some predicted the outcome and others were very intrigued by the data. We are finishing off our Australia’s neighbouring countries brochure by using pictures and information sources from books and the internet. The students have really enjoyed their student-led research project and adding their own personal flair to their presentation of their brochure. Well done 3/4! You are a bunch of hard workers!!!

Thank you to all of the wonderful parents from 3/4 who have helped in any way or form this year – your generous help and time are much appreciated – so thank you! I wish you all a wonderful Christmas and an enjoyable break over summer. I am so proud of each and every student in 3/4 and I wish them all the very best in 2018. See you all next year!!

Year 6 Highlights… One thing I loved from this year was an hour in the snow. Sean and I dug a hole and took cover from the hale. We throw snow balls everywhere but we got hit a few times. After that Sean and I broke little icicles and ate them. I hope everyone has a great time in high school.

CAMBERRA SNOW TRIP

My favourite part of the Canberra snow trip was when we went to the snow. I was

sliding down a massive hill and then I saw Ryan I was going too fast to stop I hit

Ryan and we rolled and rolled for about 3 seconds and then it stopped I and Ryan

couldn’t stop laughing. By Alex

My favourite memory is when year 5 and 6 went to Canberra snow trip. The best bits are when everyone’s friends were all together and met new people on the bus. When we were in the bus it took us a long time to get to the snow. Everyone on the bus watched a movie on the way. We caught the train up the mountain and after played in the snow. We all had a snowball fight. And after a little we spelled M.P.S in the snow. I enjoyed going to the snow, I wish to do it again.

My most memorable moment is when year 5 and 6 went to Canberra Snow Trip in 2017. I enjoyed the snow the most because it was the first time I have ever gone to the snow and you could through snow balls at your friends and roll in the snow. Sean and Ben were eating the ice from little buildings. We caught a train on the way there and back to get to a snowy area to play in the snow. It was great fun and I would love to go to the snow again with year 5 and 6 to Canberra Snow Trip.

My most memorable moment of Year Six was going to Canberra and the snow. At the snow I got in countless snowball fights and tackles with Ethan and Ryan just before we ambushed Mr Gaffey with snowballs. It was also fun diving down the snow hill while the snow was smacking against our face making it sting. The things I will miss most about this school are the friends, teachers and experiences with Maraylya Public School. Wishing everyone a great time in high school and farewell. Jack D

My favourite Year 6 memory is when we went to Canberra. My favourite part of camp was going to the snow for the very first time! Everyone was throwing snowballs and even snow rocks at each other. We all rolled down a steep hill, but not everyone made it all the way down. Chelsea was making a snow angel and I was throwing snowballs at people. When I threw one it hit Chelsea in the face while she was making a snow angel! It was lots of fun going to Canberra and I hope I can go again soon! Sorry Chelsea! By Mackenzie My yr6 memory would be the Ty water day. I had the ice bath it was so cold. Everyone got so wet when Ty would throw balloons at us and the teachers would blast us with the water cannon. I will miss this school with all the parents, teachers and of course the students. Year six highlight would be going to the regional cross country to compete as well as getting to compeat I also to look at the strange bendy track we had to run on. The run was properly my favour thing I have done in all my school years. The things have had this year has been a lot and it is all thanks to the school I have been going to since kindergarten I will miss this school Sean My favourite moment was when Sianna fell over when she went to go grab the handball. It was a stormy day when someone hit the handball out of the COLA area. Sianna ran to go get the handball but she tripped on a stick instead of getting the handball. When Sianna came back she acted like nothing happened but everyone knew something happened. In the end everyone was laughing and Sianna had dirt all over her dress. By Madi

Year 6 Memory My Year 6 memory is when we had a Ty water day last week at everyone got absolutely soaked. At the beginning all of the school captains and sports captains had to sit on the seats at the front and when one person got wet, all of the people around them get wet. Ty had set up water guns, buckets of water to tip on people, water balloons, and an ice bath. At the end Ty picked me to wet someone, I chose Jonah, I ended up picking an ice bath for him and I don’t think he enjoyed it!

My favourite memory in Year 6 is when we were playing Ty sport a few weeks ago and we were doing water games. It was girls vs boys volleyball with water balloons. Us girls lost a round so Ty came around wetting us with a water spray. When it was close to me I started to back away. Then when it was my turn, I started running but Ty unfortunately got me and I felt like he wet me more than the other girls, but it was still fun! I will miss the school heaps when I leave. Thankyou for making the past 7 years very enjoyable and exciting. Hayley My most memorable moment is when we were playing soccer and Madi had a ‘random gravity check’. We were out at lunch playing our usual game of soccer when Madi was running and thought that the ground looked sad, so she gave it a hug falling right from the sky. She then claims that she was worried the gravity was failing so she did the BEST random gravity check ever!! I wish everyone a great holiday and I hope all the Year 6’s have a great time at high school and all stay in contact. Thank you to our wonderful community, the best teachers and the most might Maraliens, anyone could ask for.

My Yr 6 highlight was last year’s mini fete. I did the crossbar challenge with Christian and Ryan. The best part about it was when someone was trying to hit the crossbar it came back and hit them right in the face, Christian was laughing and then the person who was kicked in the face kicked the ball at Christian and got him in the back of the head. This year was good but last year was better because I liked not being the top of the school. My Yr 6 highlight was last year’s mini fete. I did the crossbar challenge with Christian and Ryan. This year was good but last year was better because I liked not being

and final game was closer but we still won 100 to 73. I will always remember the school that I won my first ashes in.

Canteen News…

Rachel and I would like to Thank EVERYONE who has supported us while we manage the canteen over the last few years.

As you all be aware, we will not be running canteen next year and we have been desperately been looking for someone to take over from us.

No one has come forward as yet (there is still time to step up) . For the canteen to remain open in 2018 it will be going through the tender process. This could potentially mean that there will be NO canteen for a while when school resumes in 2018.

With that in mind we are depleting our canteen stock so we may end up running out of items next week.

We will check with the children on replacement items if this applies to your child. On Friday 15th we will be selling off all food items in canteen at CRAZY prices.. Thank you again it has been a wonderful experience to be part of this great team of woman. Rachel and Linda
