The Smartest Dog Ever As a butcher is shooing a dog from his shop, he sees $10 and anote in his mouth, reading: "10 lamb chops, please." Amazed, he takes the money, putsa bag of chops in the dog's mouth, and quickly closes the shop. He follows the dog andwatches him wait for a green light, look both ways, and trot across the road to a bus stop.The dog checks the timetable and sits on the bench. When a bus arrives, he walks aroundto the front and looks at the number, then boards the bus. The butcher follows, dumbstruck.
As the bus travels out into the suburbs, the dog takes in the scenery. After awhile hestands on his back paws to push the "stop" button, then the butcher follows him off. Thedog runs up to a house and drops his bag on the stoop. He goes back down the path,takes a big run, and throws himself -Whap! - Against the door. He does this again andagain. No answer. So he jumps on a wall, walks around the garden, beats his head againsta window, jumps off, and waits at the front door. A big guy opens it and starts cursing andpummeling the dog. The butcher runs up screams at the guy: "What the hell are you doing?This dog's a genius!" The owner responds, "Genius, no way! It's the second time this weekhe's forgotten his key!"

Going undergroundAt last week’s council meeting, Forks-
dale Ave. resident Ed Zimmerman madea last-ditch appeal to the mayor & councilregarding the 70-ft tall industrial hydropoles that are about to be erected behindone of Merritt’s premiere neighbour-hoods. Ed reminded them that formercouncillor Norm Brigden’s last words be-fore leaving council were basically:“make them put the lines underground!”
Ed said: “At that last meeting withHydro, no one [the mayor, CAO or coun-cil of the day] stood up for us, only Norm.How could they let this happen? to oneof the outstanding subdivisions?… thewhole area is now a mish-mash.”
And it will likely get worse. “Whatkind of development will go in below us,now?” asked Ed.
But he believes this new council stillhas an opportunity “to make things right”.In a residential area where all the develop-ers were made to bury the power lines atgreat expense, it’s a harsh irony that BCHydro isn’t. But council would need to actquickly & effectively; BC Hydro’s latestschedule has the erection & cable stringingcomplete by the end of this month.
“They buried the cable in front of thecourthouse. You can’t tell me that on a$65 million project, they can’t bury thecable for the 1km that it goes through ourneighbourhood,” said Ed.

Evidently occupying the constituencyoffice of the Premier of BC isn’t as easyas just sauntering in. The story behindthe story is that Judy Weinart, WanetaMurphy and Cathy Larson (aka NinjaGrannies) approached the office andwere able to jam a foot in the door, thenallow the Chiefs & supporters in after-wards. Once inside, protestors were po-lite & respectful of the staff & property,and over their time there, won the re-spect of RCMP & government security.

Though this might seem to be anotherprogram in a plethora of programs, itseeks to strengthen laws & eventually en-trench the right to a healthy environmentin our constitution, so we don’t have tofight again & again for the same thing.
