Amazed, he takes the money, puts a bag of chops in the dog's mouth, and quickly closes the shop. He follows the dog and watches him wait for a green light, look both ways, and trot across the road to a bus stop. The dog checks the timetable and sits on the bench. When a bus arrives, he walks around to the front and looks at the number, then boards the bus. The butcher follows, dumbstruck. As the bus travels out into the suburbs, the dog takes in the scenery. After awhile he stands on his back paws to push the "stop" button, then the butcher follows him off. The dog runs up to a house and drops his bag on the stoop. He goes back down the path, takes a big run, and throws himself -Whap! - Against the door. He does this again and again. No answer. So he jumps on a wall, walks around the garden, beats his head against a window, jumps off, and waits at the front door. A big guy opens it and starts cursing and pummeling the dog. The butcher runs up screams at the guy: "What the hell are you doing? This dog's a genius!" The owner responds, "Genius, no way! Ed reminded them that former councillor Norm Brigden’s last words be- fore leaving council were basically: “make them put the lines underground!” Ed said: “At that last meeting with Hydro, no one [the mayor, CAO or coun- cil of the day] stood up for us, only Norm. How could they let this happen? to one of the outstanding subdivisions?… the whole area is now a mish-mash.” And it will likely get worse. “What kind of development will go in below us, now?” asked Ed. But he believes this new council still has an opportunity “to make things right”. In a residential area where all the develop- ers were made to bury the power lines at great expense, it’s a harsh irony that BC Hydro isn’t. But council would need to act quickly & effectively; BC Hydro’s latest schedule has the erection & cable stringing complete by the end of this month. “They buried the cable in front of the courthouse. You can’t tell me that on a $65 million project, they can’t bury the cable for the 1km that it goes through our neighbourhood,” said Ed. Wayta go, Ninja Grannies Evidently occupying the constituency office of the Premier of BC isn’t as easy as just sauntering in. The story behind the story is that Judy Weinart, Waneta Murphy and Cathy Larson (aka Ninja Grannies) approached the office and were able to jam a foot in the door, then allow the Chiefs & supporters in after- wards. Once inside, protestors were po- lite & respectful of the staff & property, and over their time there, won the re- spect of RCMP & government security. Blue Dot A good turn-out at the first Blue Dot gathering — despite the fabulous spring Sunday afternoon in the Nicola Valley… Organizer Bob Reid is looking to con- tinue strengthening the local Blue Dot group, and more discussion about local groups working towards a healthy envi- ronment & community. The goal is to get city council to pass a declaration support- ing our right to a healthy environment. Already 38 municipalities large & small across Canada have made such declarations, including Whistler, Vancou- ver, Burnaby, Whitehorse, Victoria, Mon- treal, and many others. And across the world, more than 110 countries recognize the right to live in a healthy environment. Though this might seem to be another program in a plethora of programs, it seeks to strengthen laws & eventually en- trench the right to a healthy environment in our constitution, so we don’t have to fight again & again for the same thing.
