High water levelsAfter a few days of lower water lev-
els, the Min. of Forests has advised theCity of Merritt to expect rising levels onthe Nicola River, and potentiallyincreased seepage into low-lying areasthough they do not anticipate anyover-bank flooding within city limits.
Any unforeseen weather conditionscould change that, though, and causelocalized flooding that might need somepro-active flood protection. The Cityurges everyone to be alert to river condi-
tions & report any damaging flows orobstructions to them, 378-4224.
Day of the Honey BeeMay 29 has officially been declared
Day of the Honey Bee in BC.Honey bees have an estimated $200-
million impact on farming in BC, andhave been an important part of agricul-ture since they were introduced to theAmericas by European settlers hun-dreds of years ago. An estimated 30,000honey bee colonies are contracted to pol-linate food crops on BC farms everygrowing season; and pollination activi-ties are worth approximately $2.4 mil-lion annually to BC beekeepers.
Day of the Honey Bee recognizes howbeekeepers and the Province are work-
ing together to continue to improveagricultural production and stabilize theapiculture industry. It also acknowl-edges beekeepers' efforts to protect theircolonies from environmental conditionsand diseases that can affect honey bees.
The Day of the Honey Bee is celebratedon May 29th in tribute to the famousmountaineer & beekeeper NewZealander Sir Edmund Hilary , the firstwhite man to reach the summit ofMount Everest, on May 29, 1953.
Paraprosdokians (a figure of speech in which the latter part of a phrase is unexpected)
I want to die peacefully in my sleep, like my grandfather. Not screaming andyelling like the passengers in his car.
Going to church doesn't make you a Christian any more than standing in agarage makes you a car.
The last thing I want to do is hurt you. But it's still on the list.
If I agreed with you, we'd both be wrong.
War does not determine who is right - only who is left.
Knowledge is knowing a tomato is a fruit; wisdom is not putting it in a fruit salad.
