In 2006 the Parish Council, under its Chairman Keith Mullins, asked some residents to establish the Merriott Messenger on a regular basis. At that time, the Council wished to become a Quality Council and one of the criteria needed to attain this required a community publication so that the affairs of the Council could be communicated to the residents. The Council contributed £600 in the first year to help set up the Messenger to publish ten months per year and continued to underwrite it in its first few years.

Since then, the Council has continued to provide banking facilities for the Messenger and until recently has had representation on the editorial team.

The Parish Council has now decided it does not wish to have the same relationship with the Messenger. The editorial team discussed its

future at length and all agreed that it was a real asset to the village and should continue. As a result, we have set up our own banking arrange-ments. We are pleased, however, that the Parish Council has agreed to become a sponsor.

For many years, the Messenger has been fully financed by generous sponsorship and has not had to rely on financial support from the Council. The editorial team, together with the wonderful band of voluntary deliverers, have been able to increase frequency to eleven months a year and add colour, more content and better quality to the publication.

The success of the Messenger depends not only on the support of its sponsors, but to those of you who send in articles and photographs – so do please keep sending them in.

It is now two years since our benefactor, Cathy Herriman, died and her generous legacies to the village and to the Crewkerne Museum & Heritage Centre are being put to good use.

The Merriott Heritage Trust, which Cathy asked to be established, has been active for a little over a year now and during 2016 received applica-tions for grants from All Saints Church, the Village Hall Trust and the Broadway Garden maintenance volunteers. We are pleased that it has been possible for us to provide financial help towards the repair of the stonework round the West window and door-way of the Church, the restoration of the railings fronting the Village Hall and for the complete refurbish-ment and replanting of Broadway Garden.

Now that funding for local footpaths is becoming increasingly difficult to obtain at County, District and Parish level and following John Goldie’s

feature in October’s Merriott Messenger, the Trustees propose that the Trust should “adopt” Shyners Lane. This is an important and well-used footpath but in part is becoming increasingly over-

grown and more difficult to negotiate, particularly for buggies and mobility vehicles.

The whole project is a major exercise which may need to be spread over several years. In the first instance we plan to carry out major improve-ments by cutting back vegetation growing over the tarmac to restore the path to its original width and by re-planting and managing the hedgerows. An assessment of the retaining drystone wall fronting Shyners Terrace is necessary and it may be possible for the Trust to part-fund its rebuilding in coming years if other grant aid can be found.

N e w s f r o m A l l S a i n t s C h u r c h In very tidy fashion, Lent begins with Ash Wednesday on the 1st March this year. There will be a Communion Service at 7pm at All Saints, where we will receive the sign of the cross in ash, as a reminder of our mortality and the need to acknowledge our need of forgiveness. It is a powerful way of beginning the Lenten season of preparation for Holy Week and Easter.

Lent is punctuated by regular midweek communion services at 10am on Thursday

mornings. These are quiet and reflective, and everyone is welcome.

Once again there are several ‘Lent Lunches’ happening on Wednesdays across our four villages in aid of various charities, which you are welcome to attend without making a booking. Details of dates and venues are in the ‘Link’ magazine.

Mothering Sunday is on March 26th this year, and we invite all mums and their families to an All Age Communion at 10am, which will be lively and celebratory!

The Trust already has a number of significant historical documents in its care, including some early house deeds and indentures as well as copies of the 1843 Tythe Map & Apportionment, which lists details of land and property ownership and tenancies, together with a set of the Merriott Messenger from 2006, kindly donated to us by John Bowman. We must not forget that we are history-in-the- making. What we do today will be as interesting to those who come after us as the past is to us. It is vital in this era of ephemera, electronic communication and the reduction of permanent written records that we keep such things for future social and historical understanding. We appeal to you to consider depositing any historical documents or artefacts with us to ensure their survival.

The Trust has been much exercised by the question of the storage of archival material and how we can make this available to the public for research purposes. The Crewkerne Museum & Heritage Centre hold some of Merriott’s historical documents and photographs and we have now agreed to catalogue all this material for them. This will enable the Trust to assess the full extent of Merriott’s recorded history, will enable the Heritage Centre to add it to their data base so that it is more easily accessible and might provide a basis for

re-establishing the Merriott historic website, which many found very interesting and useful.

As to the future, the Trustees welcome any requests from residents and local organisations for financial help towards the restoration, improvement and refurbishment of historic buildings or features, whether Listed or not. These could include such things as date stones or inscriptions, joinery, iron-work and stonework features which may be viewed within the street scene. We would also welcome applications for finan-cial help towards tree or hedgerow planting and improve-ments to local footpath features; the re-instatement of the traditional Merriott stiles, of which only a few remain in good condition, would be a very good project.

In February we were delighted to be raising funds for the Stoke-based Hamdon Brass Children's Band, who wanted the funds to help buy uniforms. Their cake stall raised £50 and our donation was £86. We also all enjoyed two sessions of them playing for us, which made for a lovely atmosphere. The other £86 raised went to the Yeovil & District MS Society, in memory of a friend and regular stall holder, Julie, who passed away over Christmas. Our memory table for her also raised a further £21.

Every month we have a chosen local charity/group, so if you are looking to raise funds contact Lola on 07885 424588, or just pop in and enjoy a cup-pa with friends, try our tombola, raffles and there might even be something that catches your eye amongst the huge range of stalls!

Our next Monthly Market will be held on Saturday 4th March, 10am - 1pm at Merriott Social Club, 71 Lower Street.

T h e N a t i o n a l G a r d e n s S c h e m e I recently attended a presentation by a local representative of the National Gardens Scheme, telling us the history, current charitable work, and all about some of the beautiful places to visit.

The charity was set up in 1927 to raise money for a memorial to Queen Alexandra. Until then, only the upper classes had had access to visit private gardens, but many large gardens were then made available to all on certain days for a shilling entrance fee.

After the memorial was built, the charity continued, providing money for The Queen’s Nursing Service, funding District Nurses who, at that time, received no government funds.

From there the charity has grown and many small gardens and groups in villages are open to the public. Money raised goes

to well known health charities such as Marie Curie and Macmillan as well as fund-ing gardener training and garden projects such as Horatio’s Garden in Salisbury.

It was so inspiring to see pictures of lovely summer gardens and look forward to visiting some of them in the coming months

CPR and Cardio Defibrillator Training

The Parish Council is considering providing CPR training and the provision and training in the use of a cardio defibrillator for the village. This appeal is directed at, but not limited to, those of the community who are directly involved with physical activities at the parish hall, the recreation field, tennis courts and the bowls club.

The training comprises 2 courses; a 2-hour uncertified CPR course and a 4-hour combined CPR and defibrillator certificated course. Each course has vacancies for up to 15 people. It is thought that the 4-hour course should be directed at responsible adults directly concerned, or most likely to attend the various activities. The 2-hour CPR course could be made available to the wider and perhaps younger members of the community.

A lot will depend on the response to this appeal and further information. Volunteers are requested to respond to [email protected] with the following information:- name, contact details, associated activity, course preference, availability (daytime or evenings).

B o o k R e v i e w b y S h e i l a B o w m a n “All the light we

cannot see” by Anthony

Doerr

It is a delight to find a book that you want to recommend to your friends.

This happened recently when I came across "All the light we cannot see" by Anthony Doerr.

It is set during the 2nd World War and its two central characters are still children when the war begins. Marie Laure is 10 years old and blind. She lives with her locksmith father in Paris, who has fostered in her a remarkable degree

of independence by making a detailed model of the surrounding city. By tracing this with her fingers she learns to negoti-ate the streets in safety. As Paris is about to fall to the German invasion, they escape to find sanctuary with her father's reclusive uncle and house-keeper in St Malo.

Werner is a 12 year old German boy living in an orphanage with his sister Jutta. He finds an old radio which he manages to repair and they become enchanted by broadcasts from a distant radio station. Both have the Aryan blond good looks admired by the regime. Werner teaches himself radio engineer-ing to become a radio prodigy. This draws him to the attention of the authorities and he is sent to an elitist militarist school from where he is

recruited to join the army at just 16 years old, specialising in tracking "illegal" broadcasting.

The final stages of the novel take place in St Malo, which suffered devastating bombing in the immediate aftermath of the Allied invasion. It is an exciting story, with a legendary precious diamond at its heart and the eventual connection between the two young people leads to a poignant conclusion. What lifts the book above other wartime thrillers is the quality of the writing. Doerr's powers of description are remarkable, and while the plot hurries along through short vivid chapters, you are sometimes led to re-read certain passages for the beauty of the prose.

No wonder the book won the Pulitzer Prize in 2015.

John Bartholomew has recently joined the Crewkerne University of the Third Age (U3A) and is planning to arrange theatre visits. He has been successfully running similar trips for Lyme Regis U3A. Travel is by coach.

The possible trips he has in mind for later this year and next are:

Thursday September 28th: Mayflower Southampton: `Beautiful` The Carole King Musical Party tickets: £34.50 reduced from £44.50. Total cost is therefore likely to be around £47-£50.

Saturday December 2nd: Mayflower Southampton: English National Ballet: ‘The Nutcracker’. Party tickets: £36.50

reduced from £44.50. Total cost around £50.

Thursday May 17th 2018: Mayflower Southampton: `War Horse`. Party Tickets: £46.50 reduced from £49.50. Total cost therefore closer to £60.

All trips are matinees. We would plan to leave by around 10.00am to allow time

for lunch in/or near the venue and then be home by early evening.

We always try to secure seats in the stalls to avoid stairs.

Costs include the ticket, coach travel and driver`s tip.

We are happy to receive recommenda-tions for other shows and venues which might have a wide appeal. The objective is to create economies of scale. Member-ship of Crewkerne U3A is available for a small annual fee.

Dexter cattle were introduced into England from Ireland, where they have now almost disappeared, in the late 19th century. There are various suggestions as to their origin, one of which is that they were developed from Kerry cattle in south-west Ireland. Dexters are small animals, perhaps two thirds the size of Friesians and have black, red or brown coats. They have short stubby inward curving horns but polled (hornless) Dexters are also available. They are kept in small groups usually as domestic herds. Their milk is high in fat - 4% - similar to Jerseys and they produce lean succulent beef. They have also been used as work animals.

In the UK in the late 1960’s they were down to a few hundred animals but since then they have become more popular and there are now well over 1500 breeding cows. They are also found across Europe, America, Australia and South Africa. Their earlier lack of popularity was in part caused by the existence of a genetic problem associated with their small size and the fact that some breeders attempt-ed to make them even smaller. This resulted in a significant proportion of calves being born deformed (termed bulldog calves) and dead. The genetic basis of this difficulty is now better understood.

Some Dexter cattle have extremely short legs, which are 6 to 8 inches less than the average. These animals usually carry a ‘dwarfing gene’ for chondrodysplasia. If a carrier cow and a carrier bull each with short legs are mated there is a 25% chance that the calf will be deformed and be born dead. There is now a simple DNA test to find those animals which carry the gene and so breeders are able to avoid mating two carrier animals.

“Of all human activities, apart from the procreation of children, gardening is the most optimistic and hopeful.

The gardener is, by definition, one who plans for and believes and trusts in the future, whether in the short or the longer term.” Susan Hill
