R a i s e t h e R o o f !

A quick update on where we are with preparations to repair the roof. Our appointed con-tractor will commence work on site during the week begin-

ning the 11th September. It is vital that we secure the repairs before the worst of the winter weather arrives. Although, let’s be honest, it has felt quite wintry during much of August; and a small leak did develop during a period of really heavy rain. We have been turned down by several grant-making bodies, includ-ing two that initially appeared very positive about our applications. This means we have a month to raise the remaining £5000. Please, if you have

been considering a gift to help secure this treasure of a building for future generations of Merriott villagers, now is the time. Thank you.

Merriott PCC Treasurer News. We are delighted to be able to tell you that Chris Woods has offered to be the new treasurer for Merriott church. The PCC is very pleased with this appointment and thankful to Chris for his willing support. Our huge thanks to John Booth who has patiently and diligently continued as treasurer for many years, seeing us through some challenging times and into a more positive position more recently. We hope John enjoys being slightly less busy!

A Place to Pray. We know how much people value the churches and church-yards in our villages. This is a reminder that Merriott, Lopen and Hinton St George churches are open every day so that you can come in and enjoy them. Please know that you are always welcome. You may like to enjoy the buildings themselves or just be quiet, to remember loved ones or to pray. That includes children too, and parents should be able to find some activities for children which you can use in church at any time.

1 6 B e l l s ’ C h o i r – F i r s t A n n i v e r s a r y C o n c e r t It is my absolute pleasure to report on this wonderful Choir’s First Anniversary Concert held at All Saints Church, Merriott on 22nd July. The concert was very well attended by a hugely appreciative audience who were treated, not only to an amazing post concert tea (!) but also to a wide variety of choral music from a Medieval Wessex song, via Mozart’s sublime Ave Verum, through to some finger clicking gospel influence and even “pop”! The range of music reflects just how diverse the 16 Bells’ Choir is, how hard they work and always with such enthusiasm and fun.

I am delighted to be able to lead this Choir and could not do it without the help and support of its members, not least of whom is Emma Sale, our fabulous accompanist. We look forward to an exciting Autumn term after our summer break.

We are always happy to welcome new singers and there is availability in all parts. The first rehearsal of the Autumn term will be Wed 6th

September at Merriott Church.

Refugee Support Group, South Somerset thanks those who have donated clean, washable clothing and bedding, including sleeping bags, and suitable footwear. Do please continue to do so - winter clothing being necessary from October.

Refugee numbers are increasing in camps, as more Syrians flee heavy bombing by government forces, as it seeks to eradicate all rebels, and by foreign governments as they seek to do the same to Isis. In addition, the war in Yemen is producing its own refugee crisis. There is little we can do apart from help support the families as they struggle to live.

Our thanks, also, to those who have supported fundraising activities. Money raised helps to buy medication, toiletries and new underwear to send to the camps, generally in countries without resources to meet all these needs. It also allows charities on the ground in Europe to solve emergencies as soon as they arise, eg food, tents, sleeping bags and clothing for isolated children.

There are two fundraising events in September. On Sunday 24th in Hinton St George there will be a musical afternoon, starting at 2pm, in the Secret Garden at the end of West Street (TA17 8SA); there will be signs in the village. Please bring your own chairs and drinks.

On Friday 29th in Haselbury Plucknett Church there will be a coffee morning from 10.30 to 12 midday. Just bring yourselves.

We hope you are able to support us in one or both of these ways, or perhaps join our group. I continue to receive donations for Raft (refugeeaidfromtaunton.org.uk).

Now that we have two excellent courts in the village, it would be good to get local players together. Local resident Andrew Hayman has formed a Face-book group "Merriott-Tennis". (Whilst the Facebook group is closed to prevent spamming, anyone can apply to join.)

The idea is that players can note their playing level and get in touch with others. It's not a club and there are no fees, bookings or preference. But if 20/30 players (or more !) made themselves known, this would give lots of playing options.

Following last month’s piece on Licensed Premises in Merriott in 1881, Alan Keane is looking at the present state of the buildings which used to be village inns or a hotel. The “Olde George Inn” is now a house, called Old George Place on Broadway on the left side going north, just before the Village Hall. The Inn closed in 1958.

This photo, taken c1958, shows the customers about to embark on a coach trip. William Male, the land-lord, is on the far right wearing a cap.

We would love to hear from those in the picture who are still in the village and their relatives with re-collections of the Olde George and Mr Male’s trips.

One of the objects of the Merriott Heritage Trust and one which the late Cathy Herriman would have wanted us to pursue, is the preservation of historical material. The Trust is working with Crewkerne Museum and catalogu-ing all the Merriott records which they hold. Although this is daunting, it is also interesting and very rewarding and I hope that the Merriott Messenger will be a vehicle for engaging residents in village history as it unfolds from these archives.

In Part 1, we ask if anyone remembers the Merriott Civic Group and its enthusiastic and indefatigable founder, Robin Kay, who genuinely wanted to bring residents together in a spirit of friendship and cooperation. He wanted people to enjoy themselves and, to this end, talks, walks (around the village streets and on footpaths) and the popular Glen House “Cellar Movies” were organised.

But he also wanted villagers to get involved in their village. The Newsletter, which he edited for six years from 1989 to 1995 and which was delivered to all 60 members, featured members’ letters, planning issues, news about footpaths together with a regular column from the late David Lambert “Parish Council Notes” and one from the late Queenie Dodge on various aspects of Merriott’s history.

Quite a few of you will not know that the redevelopment of Tail Mill, which is still in progress, was the subject of several planning applications from 1990 onwards when a new factory and 40-50 new houses were envisaged. It is also hard to believe that the attitude of the village and its Parish Council to the development of the green centre of the village was very different from today. In the 1990s, it was a near-unanimous view that this green space should be pre-served at all cost.

Whether or not this transient and not-particularly well-supported Civic group made any lasting impact on the village, given that Robin tried to be “all things to all men”, his real legacy must surely be his work in reinstating long-neglected footpaths and ensuring, with voluntary help, that the local authority-supported Public Paths Partnership was put into practice. Paths were opened up, gates, stiles and signposts reinstated. For that our village must be grateful.

If anyone is interested in visiting this piece of Merriott’s recent past, the Newsletters can be found in the Crewkerne Museum in Box BM2-04-01. They are well worth a look and for those of us who lived in Merriott then they may even evoke some pangs of nostalgia for a time now gone and the people we knew.

M e r r i o t t M a r q u e t r y G r o u p These pictures are examples of the work done by marquetarians, such as myself.

We will be exhibiting at the Yandles of Martock Autumn Show on the 8th and 9th September and if you visit our stand you will be able to admire these two samples and many other marquetry pieces.

Remember these are made by using a very sharp knife blade and little else. Many times people get confused

and think they are paintings.

” … … a m b i e n c e o f t h e o l d f a r m ” Dear Site Manager

We would wish to thank you for the time, interest and consideration you showed us in showing us around Moor-lands Farm Redevelopment. Obviously nostalgia means that we would have preferred it to have remained in it’s original condition as a working farm. However, realistically, given the dereliction it had fallen into, and the changes in farming, the present re-development, to my mind, is a considerable achievement. It main-tains the historical layout and has been done with full consideration of

the background – even to the extent of keeping the lean-tos behind what were the corn/hay barns and stables. I even felt it had the ambience of the old farm.

The whole project, for me, has been carried out to enhance the buildings and layout and the quality of the work speaks for itself. I am sure that in the

circumstances, my aunt and uncle, who were the last farmers, would have been pleased to endorse my view of the successful preservation of Moorlands Farm. It has made what were derelict buildings, an asset to the village.

Again my thanks and appreciation.

Regards,

Richard Rumsby

Gardening Quote of the Month

sent in by Mo Frampton

“I value my garden more for being full of black-birds than of cherries and, very frankly, give them fruit for their songs”.

We are fast approaching Shoe-Box time again and we would be delighted if you could help once more with our 2017 Appeal. We are so grateful for your generosity every year, and we know that many desperately poor and margin-alised people in Eastern Europe will be deeply touched as they receive their shoe-boxes this Christmas.

Boxes can be sent to every age-range, from babies to the elderly, so the choice is yours! Leaflets giving more details will be avail-able from mid-September in the Church and in

the Broadway Garage.

Completed boxes, as well as 'fillers' can be dropped off at the addresses below - final date for collection is November 4th. We would also be grateful for any extra empty shoe-boxes. These can also be dropped off to us at any time.

Thank you so much.

‘Flix in the Stix’ presents ‘THE VICEROY'S HOUSE' (12A), on Saturday 16th September in Hinton Village Hall at 7.00 pm. Tickets £5 in advance from the Village Shop and Dorothy’s Tea Room, or £5.50 on the door. To reserve tickets please contact Bob Kefford on 01460 72563.

This film is set in India in 1947: Lord Mountbatten (Hugh Bonneville) and his wife Edwina (Gillian Anderson) arrive in New Delhi to oversee the country's transition from British rule to independence. Taking his place in the resplendent mansion known as the Viceroy's House, Mountbatten hopes to end centuries of colonial rule without strife but, in a country divided by deep religious and cultural differences, this proves no easy undertaking, setting off a seismic struggle that

threatens to tear India apart.

Hugh Bonneville leads a strong cast in this gripping, witty and charming historical drama , which also has an 'Upstairs Downstairs' theme within the household. Andrew Overhill

R e s i d e n t s e n j o y a f i n e S u m m e r F e t e Here are a few pictures from our most enjoyable Summer Fete at Careford Lodge on Saturday 12th August, which was very well attended, raising money for the Yeovil Free-Wheelers.

We were entertained by local Singer Victoria Starr who was a big hit with residents, their visitors, friends and family. Our terrific team worked very hard to make it all in a very successful day.

Our next event is on the 29th September, when we will be holding a Macmillan Cancer Support coffee morning and cake sale from 10am -12. All welcome. Sophie Roberts
