Belgium is particularly important in the pharmaceutical sector, as it is involved in all stages of product development, from research to packaging and distribution1.

Our production and distribution plant at Heist-op-den-Berg has been operational since 1973 and employs 800 workers. It is one of the largest distribution and manufacturing sites for MSD in the world. The products are packaged there [from 160 to 170 million packs per year] and transported throughout the world for patients in more than 140 countries.

The activities are carried out with close attention to tight deadlines, punctual deliveries, low costs, high quality and great flexibility. The site manufactures and packages a wide range of products, including: tablets, liquids, ointments, creams, ampoules and vials. It also packages biological products.

Products of vital importance in the area of cancer are also packaged at Heist.

THE IMPORTANCE OF RESEARCH IN BELGIUMBelgium is the leader in Europe and in second place in the world in terms of clinical trials. Close to 10% of investment in biotechnological research and development is made in our country1.

We are actively involved in all stages of clinical research. Around 90% of our “First in Human” studies [first clinical trials in humans] are carried out in Belgium.

We are currently conducting more than 40 clinical trials [late stage development] which include more than 1,000 patients in 140 centres in Belgium and in the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg.

Also, we have entered into partnerships with very innovative Belgian biotechnology companies, with a view to

developing promising products that are able to respond to unmet medical needs.

MEETING THE MOST URGENT CHALLENGES IN THE AREA OF HEALTHOur research has enabled us to make medicines available to the medical profession that improve the quality of life of millions of patients with many medical conditions.

Our current priority is to concentrate our research and development activities in 5 therapeutic areas [oncology, diabetes, care in the hospital environment and immunology, vaccines and Alzheimer’s].Innovative solutions have to be developed urgently, in part because of the growing number of patients affected by these illnesses, but above

all because of their impact on the quality of life of these patients and those close to them.

ONCOLOGYCancer is increasingly threatening our health. Our country sees more than 65,000 new cases every year. One man in three and one woman in four will face a cancer diagnosis before the age of 752.

It is thought that the number of new cases will increase by around 70% over the next two decades3.

SCIENTIFIC EXCELLENCE IN THE SERVICE OF INNOVATION

DIABETESDiabetes is a major cause of the risk of blindness, renal failure, myocardial infarction, CVA* and amputation of the lower limbs4. According to the Institut Scientifique de Santé Publique (ISP) [Scientific Institute of Public Health], in 2014 the prevalence of diabetes was estimated at 6.33% of the Belgian population over 15 years of age.However, it is estimated that a third of the patients with type 2 diabetes have not been diagnosed5.

CARE IN THE HOSPITAL ENVIRONMENT & IMMUNOLOGYIn Belgium, in 2010, 22,900 people were affected by the hepatitis C virus6. In Europe, 25,000 people die every year because of bacteria resistant to antibiotics7.

VACCINESWorldwide, cervical cancer is the fourth most common cause of cancer in women8. In Belgium more than 18,000 patients suffer from condyloma. Around 16,000 cases could be avoided with HPV vaccination**9.

ALZHEIMER’S DISEASEIt is estimated that 8.7 million Europeans suffer from Alzheimer’s disease. In Belgium, 130,000 cases have been diagnosed officially, but just as many patients have not been diagnosed10.

Unfortunately, because of the depletion of natural resources and climatic change, it is essential to run farms in a way that protects animal health.

Our large portfolio of vaccines and pharmaceutical medicines helps us to maintain and improve animal health in a way that meets the specific needs of owners, veterinary surgeons and stockfarmers.

We offer innovative programmes, such as needle-free vaccination in pigs1, and services to help to protect animal health and provide high-quality and affordable food supplies.

We are also partners in many research institutions, universities and biotechnology companies which allows us access to new technology.

Our scientists throughout the world are doing everything they can for us to achieve our aim of improving health, and our tenacity is bearing fruit. Today, MSD has a large pipeline and is investing in 36 development programmes, in particular in immuno-oncology and in vaccination (see Table 1)1.

The work that we are doing in our laboratories throughout the world has made it possible to save and improve the lives of millions of patients. Scientific discovery and development have always been the cornerstones of our company. Today we are conducting research in a wide range of therapeutic areas, including oncology, infectious diseases, cardiovascular diseases, vaccines and neurology. In immuno-oncology, for example, we are conducting a major clinical development programme in more than 30 types of tumour and in more than 16,000 patients in the world with pembrolizumab2, an innovative compound for which we were awarded the prestigious Prix Galien prize3.

HEALTH LITERACYImproving the level of health literacy – the capacity of individuals to research, understand and use the information about their health – is a major challenge. A low level of literacy ultimately leads to a lower level of health and leads to costs for the community4.

MSD considers it to be its responsibility to support innovative initiatives in order to help health professionals to meet this challenge. In this context we have created the “Well Done MSD Health Literacy Awards”.

In 2017, for the fifth edition, the projects recognised are:• In primary care: The Square Levie Pharmacy in Brussels.In order to improve communication in the dispensary between the pharmacists and patients speaking a foreign language, the Square Levie Pharmacy decided to create its own medication graphic. This tool consists of pictograms that help enable clear and effective communication with the patient.

• In specialist care: ZNA Renal Clinic in Antwerp.The Renal Clinic has created an explanatory photo guide used by nurses for new patients and also

information brochures on kidney diseases and kidney function to better inform them about their condition.

• In community care: Cultures & Santé à Bruxelles. The aim of this facilitation guide is to enable practitioners to understand the concept of health literacy as well as its challenges, to identify the benefits of the community approach, and to devise action strategies with the aim of health promotion.

MSD MECTIZAN® DONATION PROGRAMSince 1987, MSD has been distributing MECTIZAN® (ivermectin)*** free of charge; this is an innovative medicine which prevents river blindness. This donation programme formed from a collaboration between MSD, the World Health Organization (WHO) and other organisations. More than two billion treatments have been administered since the beginning of this programme and MSD has committed to its continuation for as long as necessary5.

This work was recognised by the Nobel prize for medicine in 2015, awarded to Dr. William C. Campbell, a retired employee of MSD, and to Professor Satoshi Omura6.
