The novel so enraged the author’s Westmeath rural Irish neighbors that the book was publicly burned, its author humiliated, and his father, a local schoolteacher, driven into exile. It also resulted in a high-profile court case by those who thought that they had been described. Hostility against the book led to its burning.

‘Valley of the squinting windows’ has become a colloquial term, particularly in Ireland, for a society obsessed with providing neighbours and peers with a good perception of one’s personal matters.

Author InformationBrinsley MacNamara, whose real name was John Weldon, was born near Devlin, Co Westmeath, in 1890. He joined the Abbey Theatre Company in 1909 and toured with it in the United States. In 1912 he decided to devote his time to writing and ‘The Valley of the Squinting Windows’, published in 1918, established him as a leading Irish writer, though it raised a storm of violent protest. He went on to write six novels, two books of short stories and many plays for the Abbey of which he was for a time a director. He died in February 1963.

Description Early on the morning of 30 May 1847, the Ajax weighed anchor in Dublin harbour with the passengers facing a six-week crossing of the North Atlantic to what they hoped would be a land of promise somewhere in Canada. Within a year after landing in Canada one of the passengers of the Ajax published a diary that gives remarkable details about the voyage from Dublin to Grosse Île, the Canadian quarantine station. The passenger signed his name as Robert Whyte. Whyte was a protestant gentleman of good education and position as well as being a professional writer who intended to publish his diary. The diary appeared in print in 1848. It is signed in the author’s own handwriting and features vivid descriptions of the spectacular scenery along the St Laurence River and striking delineations of the passengers, including the captain and his wife, the crew and the suffering travellers. Vessels constituting what has aptly been called the coffin fleet transported over 100,000 immigrants in panic flight from famine, fever and conditions involving deprivation of all human rights. Greedy captains and shipping agents were responsible for the crowding which resulted in much suffering and enormous loss of life on the ocean.

Author Information James J. Mangan F.SC. was a retired teacher living in Toronto. He was born in 1907 at Admaston, Ontario. His other published work includes Gerald Keegan’s Famine Diary, The Voyage of the Naparima.

Description

The famine drove huge numbers of Irish men and women to leave the island and pursue their survival in foreign lands. In 1847, some 200,000 people sailed for Boston alone. Of this massive group, 2,000 never made it to their destination, killed by disease and hunger during the voyages, their remains consigned to a watery grave.

The sinking of the brig St John off the coast of Massachusetts in October 1849, was only one of many tragic events to occur during this mass exodus. The ship had sailed from Galway, loaded with passengers so desperate to escape the effects of famine that some had walked from as far afield as Clare to reach the ship.

The passengers on the St John made it to within sight of the New World before their ship went down and they were abandoned by their captain, who denied that there had been any survivors when he and some of his crew made it ashore. For those who died in the seas off Massachusetts, there was nothing to mark a last resting place; no name, no memory of them ever having existed, just another statistic in a terrible tragedy.

Author Information William Henry is an historian and archaeologist from Galway city. The author of numerous books, including the acclaimed and successful ‘Galway and the Great War’, ‘Forgotten Heroes’ and ‘Supreme Sacrifice: The Story of Eamonn Ceannt’. He published his first book for children: ‘Tír na nÓg: A New Adventure’ in 2008.

While behind bars, Sands secretly wrote on toilet paper and cigarette papers with the refill of a cheap pen that he kept hidden inside his body. These writings were then smuggled out of the prison. With dry humour, they chart a man’s attempt to preserve his identity against appalling beatings, unimaginable filth, freezing cold and numbing boredom. In poetry and prose, he vividly evokes the enclosed hell of Long Kesh, the harassment and the humiliatingly invasive searches.

Author InformationBobby Sands was an Irish volunteer of the Provisional Irish Republican Army and member of the United Kingdom Parliament who died on hunger strike while in HM Prison Maze. He was the leader of the 1981 hunger strike in which Irish republican prisoners protested against the removal of Special Category Status. During his strike he was elected as a member of the United Kingdom Parliament as an Anti H-Block/Armagh Political Prisoner candidate. His death resulted in a new surge of IRA recruitment and activity. International media coverage brought attention to the hunger strikers, and the Republican movement in general, attracting both praise and criticism.

She has worked for the BBC, RTÉ, The Irish Press, Independent Network News and Reuters, spending a large part of her time reporting from Northern Ireland. She is the author of ‘Holy Cross – The Untold Story’ (Brehon Press, 2004). In 2009 she gave up journalism to work for The Pat Finucane Centre for Human Rights in Armagh as an investigator and case worker.
