MEQUON-THIENSVILLE RECREATION DEPARTMENT

As you plan activities for your children this summer be sure to keep in mind the academic and enrichment courses that are offered through the Mequon-Thiensville Recreation Department. Summer Academy is designed for students entering 4K-8th grade.

SCHEDULEThere will be two sessions of Summer Academy. Due to this year’s calendar, Session 1 will include ONE full week of activities, Monday-Friday. Session 2 is TWO weeks, Monday-Thursday. For both sessions, flexible scheduling options allow for registration in one class or up to all five classes per session, for a full day of fun enrichment activities (8 a.m.-4:15 p.m.). Drop off time is no earlier than 5 minutes before the start of the course.

SESSION 1: June 24-28 ONE full week, Monday-Friday

SESSION 2: July 29-August 8 TWO weeks, Monday-Thursday

LOCATIONAll classes will be held at Wilson Elementary School, located at 11001 N Buntrock Ave, Mequon.

LUNCHNo charge for lunch both sessions for those students who stay for classes all day. Student must register if planning to stay for lunch in order to plan for supervision. Lunch is not provided; students should bring a lunch from home.

PLAYGROUNDSupervised playground activities are available for students who require morning drop off or additional supervised time in the afternoon.

FINANCIAL AIDFinancial Aid is available for students who qualify for the Free and Reduced Lunch Program. For financial aid applicants, please register in-person at the Mequon-Thiensville Recreation Department located at Range Line Center located at 11040 N. Range Line Rd., Mequon.

Power of Friendships #315013Through role-play, book study, and other activities, students will learn how to better express themselves and discover a common language for confidently managing conflict. We will create a culture rooted in respect and kindness as we learn the importance of having a voice, embracing your uniqueness, and surrounding yourself with others who treat you with respect. This course is for both boys and girls.

Games, Puzzles, and Instant Challenges #315016This class will challenge students’ thinking and encourage creative problem-solving through games and puzzles that require logical, strategic, and abstract thinking, and games that challenge students to work as teams and follow directions. Activities will include games inside and out such as board games, puzzles, kickball, etc.

2:30-3:45 p.m. I Am an Author #315023This class will offer students the ability to continue practice in writing. Students will gain experience in brainstorming, organizing their thoughts, and publishing their work to enhance their ability to author informational, opinion, and narrative writing.

Purposeful Play #315024Students will learn valuable life skills by engaging in a variety of age-appropriate games and activities that include running, throwing, catching, kicking, and so much more! Through these activities, students will also develop good sportsmanship and team-building skills.

Entering 2nd - 3rd

12-1:15 p.m. Once Upon a Time #315032This class is all about faraway lands and beloved fairy tale characters. Students will compare and contrast various fairy tales and create projects that go hand in hand with the tales. These projects help students think creatively and problem-solve while imagining faraway lands and beloved characters.

Math FUNdamentals #315033Students will strengthen skills and gain extra practice in mathematics using a workshop approach. The focus will include building skills in number and operations, algebraic thinking, geometry, and data and measurement.

Science Lab #315034Young scientists will learn through experiments, research, reading, and writing as well as other hands-on activities.

1:15-2:30 p.m. Mind Benders #315035What gets sharper the more you use it? Your brain! In this course students will stay sharp and have fun this summer with challenging logic puzzles, brain teasers, and calculator riddles. Develop the logic, reading comprehension, and mental organization skills key to succeeding in all subjects. These fun puzzles are also great for developing real-life problem-solving skills!

2D Art: Level 1 #315037Students will create 2D artwork (painting, drawing, printmaking). We will focus on creating work that uses various materials such as chalk pastels, watercolor, oil pastels, and paper.

We will be focusing on basic greetings and vocabulary needed to begin to learn the language. Students will participate in a variety of learning activities and games throughout the week.

Fun with Sports and Games #315039Students explore teamwork while playing fun games and learning the rules of popular sports.

9-10:15 a.m. Extra, Extra, Read All About It! #315040Do you enjoy writing, or want to become a better writer? Come join us as we write all different sorts of articles for the MT Summer Tribune! We are looking for talented writers who want to sharpen their craft and writers who are looking to build their skills for the next school year! At the end of our time together, each student will have a piece published in the MT Summer Tribune and will take a copy home to share with friends and family.

Story Problem Solvers #315041This course is for students who want or need to strengthen their skills in solving story problems and explaining their thinking/reasonableness in math. This time will be spent working on solving different story structures and problems through a variety of activities while helping students visually and conceptually understand the operations being used. We will show how the math they learn applies in real-world settings.

Students will explore and learn from people who speak for a living and their keys to being a successful speaker!

Taco Truck Math #315044Using the math workshop foundation, students will create and run a Taco Truck business, while applying decimals, fractions, area, perimeter, and apply those skills into real-world situations. There are steps and procedures to assist students through this project, but the work and results will be determined by students’ ideas. Students will meet with teacher in small groups for expanded practice of specific skills, or for enrichment of skills in which the student has demonstrated mastery.

Cooking #315045Students will work together to explore and identify recipes, then use those recipes in the kitchen. Students will be able to read recipes, identify ingredients needed, use math skills, and work together to ensure a delicious outcome!

Students will learn about Rube Goldberg and work to design an overly complex contraption using humor and a narrative to accomplish a simple task.

3D Art: Level 2 #315053Students will have the opportunity to create 3-dimensional artwork. Sculptures will be created with paper mache and plaster using armatures to create the initial shape. Proper technique and craftsmanship are stressed in this course. Students should come to class ready to get a bit messy!

9-10:15 a.m. Algebra Skills #315054Whether you are a student taking Algebra or Honors Algebra as a 7th or 8th grader, come join us for some math fun while brushing up on those skills that you will need to be successful in Algebra. This class will get your math skills all warmed up and ready to go for Algebra in the fall.

Students must provide their own digital camera. An SLR camera is preferred, but not required. No phones may be used as cameras in this class.

Book Club #315062Entering 6th grade: “Every person has lots of ingredients to make them into what is always a one-of-a-kind creation.” – “Counting by 7s” by Holly Goldberg Sloan. This is just one of the books we will be reading and discussing during this summer’s book club. Also, students will have the opportunity to share their own interest books with peers.

Entering 7th and 8th: “Trouble is, you can’t run away from yourself.” Coach snatched the towel from his shoulder, folded into a perfect square, and set it in the space between us. “Unfortunately,” he said, “ain’t nobody that fast.” – Jason Reynolds from his new novel “Ghost”. This is just one of the books we will be reading and discussing during this summer’s book club. Also, students will have the opportunity to share their own interest books with peers.

Model Rocketry #315064Students will obtain a better understanding of aerodynamics, rocket propulsion, teamwork, cooperation, and social interaction as they are guided through the process of building and launching model rockets. Each student should expect to build and launch one rocket during this course. We will be watching parts of the movie “October Skies,” because it relates directly to the course content.

Instant Challenges #315065In this class students will explore different challenges. This is a chance for individuals or teams to show off their creative problem-solving skills as they demonstrate their teamwork and ability to think on their feet.

Taco Truck Math #315126Using the math workshop foundation, students will create and run a Taco Truck business, while applying decimals, fractions, area, perimeter, and apply those skills into real-world situations. There are steps and procedures to assist students through this project, but the work and results will be determined by students’ ideas. Students will meet with teacher in small groups for expanded practice of specific skills, or for enrichment of skills in which the student has demonstrated mastery.
