Heavy menstrual bleeding,
menorrhagia
• Approximately 10-15% of fertile women sufferfrom heavy menstrual bleeding or menorrhagia, defined as a menstrual blood loss (MBL) of > 80 ml) ovulatory cycle1
• Risk for iron deficiency anaemia1
• Reason for millions of hysterectomies annually2
• Hormonal contraceptive methods, eg OC´s and
Mirena® reduce menstrual blood loss3-4

Hysterectomy and heavy menstrual bleeding
• Approximately 40% of women in the USA undergo
hysterectomy (main cause: bleeding disturbances)
• 95 000 hysterectomies were performed in Korea
(population 45 million) in 2006
• ≈ 43 000 hysterectomies annually are performed in
Australia (population 19.9 million)

The first question that should
be asked is whether or not the
modern woman needs to have
menstruation and monthly
bleeding at all

The
menstrual
cycle
Should the modern woman
accept having menstruation ?
“monthly menstruation has been socialised and
mythologised into being the unquestionable natural,
normal and beneficial state for women”
“menses should be optional and convenient”
Thomas & Ellertson. Lancet 2000;355:922–24
Contraceptive methods are now available that
may induce amenorrhea or less frequent
menstruation thus reducing the occurrence of
cycle related symptoms:
Mirena®
Induces amenorrhea in 20-40% of users
Andersson et al. Contraception 1994:49:56–72
Long cycle use of CHC´s reduces the number of
menstrual periods
![Page 34: Menstrual blood loss & menstrual disordersMenstrual disorders •2.5 million women in the USA affected annually •Costs US industry 8% of total wage bill •Texas instruments reported](https://reader033.vdocuments.us/reader033/viewer/2022042810/5f9920524203854ce854ed98/html5/thumbnails/34.jpg)

Seven years of

Are there any
disadvantages for the
woman if she has
induced
amenorrhea??
No!
