TITLE BRISMES ANNUAL CONFERENCE 2011, INSTITUTE OF ARAB AND ISLAMIC STUDIES, UNIVERSITY OF EXETER

DESCRIPTION

The central theme of the conference is intended to encourage presenters to move beyond the debates on radicalisation, security and terrorism which have pre-occupied many Middle East specialists since 9/11. The conference seeks to move the focus to what the peoples of the region themselves aspire to, and what the challenges are in their satisfying these aspirations. External assumptions of what Middle Eastern peoples aspire to have often proved inaccurate and unrealistic. The aspirations referred to are not only political, but also cultural, social, religious and economic. They may be reflected in historical as well as contemporary narratives. Perceptions of ―development‖ and ―progress‖ are meaningless without examining the reality of aspirations. Similarly, challenges depend on what the populations themselves actually want. In all of these dimensions, the emphasis will be to the bottom-up approach – a stress on the micro rather than the macro.

TITLE

3rd INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE OF MEDITERRANEAN WORLDS: CONVERGENCE OF THE MEDITERRANEAN: COMMERCE, CAPITAL AND TRADE ROUTES IN THE HISTORY OF A SEA, UNIVERSITY OF SALERNO

DESCRIPTION

The Mediterranean, in various literatures, is perceived as infinite: a sphere of unseen possibilities. Both the sea and its shores are intractably connected and in constant flux. Border, boundary, or bridge, the mass of water has for millennia been divisive or connective for those who inhabit its shores. Port cities on particular shores share a common hybrid and cosmopolitan, socio-economic and political structure. This is as true today as ever it was in the past: from pre-history to the 21st century. This interdisciplinary conference is organized by the Department of Humanities and Social Sciences, Eastern Mediterranean University in collaboration with the Department of Historical and Social Sciences, University of Salerno, The Mediterranean Seminar and Research Centre of Trans-Mediterranean Studies-Institut für Kunstgeschichte, University of Bern.

TITLE ENGAGED CITIZENS? POLITICAL PARTICIPATION AND CIVIC ENGAGEMENT AMONG YOUTH, WOMEN, MINORITIES AND MIGRANT, PIDOP CONSORTIUM/UNIVERSITY OF BOLOGNA

DESCRIPTION

In many countries, conventional forms of political participation have declined in recent years, with growing levels of political apathy, disengagement from formal democratic processes and increasing distrust of, and lack of confidence in, political institutions. This democratic deficit poses a serious threat to the perceived legitimacy of governance. To understand and promote active citizenship, it is vital to examine how people conceive their role as citizens, how they develop a sense of belonging and ownership in their communities, and how they subjectively experience this role and sense of belonging. It is also essential to investigate a range of diverse groups, particularly marginalised groups that are at risk of political disengagement due to age, gender or ethnicity, if the aim is to develop effective policy and practical recommendations to reconfigure democracy where participation, ownership, diversity and pluralism are key words.

TITLE CONFERENCE ON SUPRANATIONAL GOVERNANCE AND EUROPEAN SECURITY, UNIVERSITY OF SALFORD

DESCRIPTION

The conference aims to assess the role of European institutions in European security, as well as substantive security policies in Europe, in a multidisciplinary perspective. The EU is making strong inroads into areas of security traditionally reserved to states. Many scholars who analyse the EU's role in the security field tend to focus on military-related problems. However, given the characteristics of today's security problems, military capabilities do not represent the entire range of issues in security policies. Security concerns are increasingly triggered by fundamental challenges, such as terrorism, climate change, migration, and many other 'soft security issues', threats which have been fully expressed in the European Security Strategy (ESS) of 2003.

LEGACIES OF THE COLD WAR, HAMBURG INSTITUTE FOR

SOCIAL RESEARCH

DESCRIPTION

Since it began in 2003, the conference series ―Between ‗Total War‘ and ‗Small Wars‘: Studies in the Societal History of the Cold War‖ has successfully re-charted the historical coordinates of the Cold War, surveyed recent international research, and introduced new approaches and issues in Cold War studies to German discussions. This eighth and final conference will bring together retrospective and prospective analysis of the political, social, economic, and cultural continuities that persist after the end of the Cold War, the legacies and aftereffects that continue to shape the world of the twenty-first century, whether directly or in a different guise. Which of these aftereffects are genuine products of the Cold War; which are related to longer-term continuities but were altered or reconstituted in decisive ways during the Cold War? Our aim is, first, to identify significant legacies of the Cold War at the level of a ―holistic‖ societal history and, second, pay equal attention to examining such phenomena in the West, the East, and the Third World.

TITLE THE EUROPEAN INTEGRATION PROCESS IN THE EYES OF OTHERS: HISTORICAL PERSPECTIVES, 1952-1992, SEVENTH HEIRS CONFERENCE

DESCRIPTION

In the current literature on the historiography of European integration, a very

limited space is devoted to the external relations of the EC/EU.

Notwithstanding the growing importance of the EU as a global actor, scholars

have mainly focused their attention on the continental process of European

unification. The goal is to promote the study of the international dimension of

the EC/EU, the direct and indirect impact its common policies have had on a

worldwide scale, as well as the link between its international self-representation

and the more general discourse of identity.

THE FUTURE OF EU FOREIGN POLICY: AN INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON THE POLITICAL, ECONOMIC AND CULTURAL DIMENSIONS OF EU FOREIGN POLICY - INSTITUTE FOR CULTURAL DIPLOMACY

DESCRIPTION

As the world reflects on the process of German reunification and its impact on the evolution of the European Union, the Institute for Cultural Diplomacy will hold "The Future of EU Foreign Policy: An International Conference on the Political, Economic, and Cultural Dimensions of EU Foreign Policy". The conference will bring together scholars and academics, civil society practitioners, journalists, political and diplomatic representatives, and other interested stakeholders for a three-day program of lectures and panel discussions featuring renowned figures from international politics, diplomacy, academia, and civil society. Cultural and social activities will complement the academic components and provide an opportunity for participants to expand their personal networks and experience Berlin's rich cultural landscape. The recent 20th anniversary celebrations of the reunification of Germany presented an ideal opportunity to look back at the impact of this historical event on the emergence of the European Union and the changing nature of international relations. Whilst we are able to reflect on the past two decades with ever greater clarity, the future remains ever more uncertain. "The Future of EU Foreign Policy" will address this challenge. "The Future of EU Foreign Policy" will look in detail at the development of an EU common foreign and security policy, the involvement of the EU in peacekeeping and humanitarian activity, and how the EU's role in the world might development over the coming two decades. Through constructive discussion and debate the conference will provide best practice guidelines for current and future European leaders, and will make policy recommendations at the local, national, and regional levels.

TITLE IJMES SPECIAL ISSUE: MAGHRIBI HISTORIES IN THE MODERN ERA

DESCRIPTION

Until roughly a decade ago, modern North African history occupied a rather marginal position relative to the histories of adjacent regions. Just as importantly, research in the past ten years has connected what used to be somewhat distinct historical sub-fields in novel ways. And scholarly associations that once embodied those different fields have experienced considerable ―in-migrations‖ and trans-associational traffic as younger scholars especially formulate and tackle new questions regarding North Africa from circa 1800 until the contemporary era. Now the Maghreb is seen as sitting at the confluence of multiple worlds and historical processes: Arab-Berber northern Africa, Europe, the Mediterranean, and, until the post-World War I period, the Ottoman Empire. Nevertheless, IJMES has not benefitted to the extent it might have from article submissions devoted to modern North African history. This special issue invites submissions from scholars in the historical sciences working on various periods from the late eighteenth century on, whose primary (but not necessarily sole) focus are the peoples, societies, and states in what we now know as Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, and Libya.

TITLE CALL FOR CHAPTERS: MANUFACTURING PHOBIAS

DESCRIPTION

Various groups have recognized that hope and fear are very powerful driving forces capable of moving nations and shaping its actions.
