MEMORY VERSE

WHAT DID WE TALK ABOUT THIS WEEK?

JESUS BEING BORN!

WHY DID THE ANGEL ANNOUNCE JESUS’ BIRTH TO

SHEPHERDS?

TO SHOW THAT JESUS CAME TO SAVE ALL

PEOPLE—NO MATTER HOW RICH OR POOR.

WHAT DID THE SHEPHERDS DO WHEN THEY HEARD

THE NEWS OF JESUS?

THEY WENT TO FIND JESUS, AND THEN TOLD

PEOPLE ABOUT HIM.

WHY DO WE CELEBRATE CHRISTMAS AND THE

BIRTH OF JESUS?

DISCUSS AS A FAMILY!

Around two years after Jesus was

born, the Wise Men, or Magi, arrived in Jerusalem looking

for Him. The Wise men were most likely educated men

from Persia. They had learned of the birth of the new king

by studying the stars, which suggests that they may have

been astronomers.

Jerusalem was the capital city and that’s probably why

the Wise Men went there. Expecting the new king to be in

a palace, they went straight to the palace of King Herod,

who was at that time king over the Jews. There the Wise

Men learned about an Old Testament prophecy that said a

King (the promised Messiah) would be born in Bethlehem.

So they traveled to Bethlehem and found Jesus (by then

no longer a baby, but a young child) living in a house with

His parents. They gave Him gifts of gold (wealth),

frankincense (expensive perfume used in temple worship),

and myrrh (a sweet-smelling liquid used in burials).

Having been warned in a dream not to return to tell

Herod where Jesus was, the Wise Men returned to their

homeland and avoided Jerusalem.

Herod had been appointed king of

Judea by the Roman government. Herod was a jealous and

ruthless ruler. To make sure no one could take his throne

away from him, Herod put to death his wife, 3 sons,

mother-in-law, brother-in-law, uncle, and many others. He

killed anyone who might try to take his throne. So when

the Wise Men said a new king had been born, Herod

wanted to kill Him too.

Herod tried to trick the Wise Men into leading him to

Jesus. When that didn’t work, he had all the baby boys in

Bethlehem who were two years and under killed. In a

dream, God warned Joseph to take Jesus to Egypt and save

Him from Herod’s heartless response.

CAN WE PRAY FOR YOU? Any cool stories about

Bible time with your kiddos? Are

there any additional tools we can

offer? We would LOVE to hear

from you! Please email us at
