Captain Michael Joseph Catanese, JAGC, USNR, formerly Commanding Officer of the Naval Reserve Trial Judiciary Unit, died on Thursday, December 23,

2004. Judge Catanese was a thirty year resident of the Wildwoods, where he lived with his wife Holly and his children Nicholas, Alexandra and Christopher.

Captain Catanese was born in Philadelphia, the son of the late Mario and Elizabeth Pelligrini Catanese. Before moving to the Jersey Shore, Captain Catanese lived in Havertown, Pennsylvania. Captain Catanese was a dedicated parishioner of the Roman Catholic Church of the Assumption in Wildwood Crest.

Captain Catanese’s exceptional academic career began at St. Aloysius Academy and Wildwood High School. He was also a graduate of Villanova University where he was awarded a Bachelor of Arts degree. Captain Catanese received his juris doctor degree from Loyola University School of Law in New Orleans. He was admitted to practice law in Pennsylvania and New Jersey. Captain Catanese was employed by the New Jersey Public Defender as a deputy public defender in the Cape May County office.

Judge Catanese’s distinguished naval career began as a student in the law program. Commissioned an ensign in 1982, Captain Catanese served four years on active duty and was assigned to the Naval Legal Service Offices in Bremerton, Washington and Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Captain Catanese affiliated with the Selected Reserves in 1987 and served in a variety of capacities in support of the Office of the Judge Advocate General and the Naval Legal Service Command. Most recently, Captain Catanese was appointed a military judge in the Navy-Marine Corps Trial Judiciary. Captain Catanese’s personal decorations included the Navy-Marine Corps Commendation Medal and the Navy Achievement Medal.

A devoted family man and civic leader, Captain Catanese served on the Wildwood Crest Beach Patrol and the Wildwood Crest Board of Education (as both a member and board president). Captain Catanese was a member of the Cape May County Bar Association and served as the coach of the Greater Wildwood Football Team.

In addition to his wife Holly and his children, Nicholas, Alexandra and Christopher, Judge Catanese is survived by his brothers George and Ralph, his sister Elizabeth and many nephews, nieces, grandnephews and grandnieces. Captain Catanese is honored by his many friends, particularly his brother officers and trusted service members of the Navy-Marine Corps legal community.

In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. The earth was formless and void, and darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was moving over the surface of the waters. Then God said, "Let there be light"; and there was light. God saw that the light was good; and God separated the light from the darkness. God called the light day, and the darkness He called night. And there was evening and there was morning, one day.

Then God said, "Let there be an expanse in the midst of the waters, and let it separate the waters from the waters. God made the two great lights, the greater light to govern the day, and the lesser light to govern the night; He made the stars also. God placed them in the expanse of the heavens to give light on the earth, and to govern the day and the night, and to separate the light from the darkness; and God saw that it was good. There was evening and there was morning, a fourth day.

Then God said, "Let the waters teem with swarms of living creatures, and let birds fly above the earth in the open expanse of the heavens." God created the great sea monsters and every living creature that moves, with which the waters swarmed after their kind, and every winged bird after its kind; and God saw that it was good. God blessed them, saying, "Be fruitful and multiply, and fill the waters in the seas, and let birds multiply on the earth." There was evening and there was morning, a fifth day.

Then God said, "Let the earth bring forth living creatures after their kind: cattle and creeping things and beasts of the earth after their kind"; and it was so. God made the beasts of the earth after their kind, and the cattle after their kind, and everything that creeps on the ground after its kind; and God saw that it was good.

Then God said, "Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness; and let them rule over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the sky and over the cattle and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth." God created man in His own image, in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them. God blessed them; and God said to them, "Be fruitful and multiply, and fill the earth, and subdue it; and rule over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the sky and over every living thing that moves on the earth." When the Lord saw her, He felt compassion for her, and said to her, "Do not weep." And He came up and touched the coffin; and the bearers came to a halt. And He said, "Young man, I say to you, arise!" The dead man sat up and began to speak. And Jesus gave him back to his mother.
