PRAY FOR OUR NATION AND OUR LEADERS
MEMORIAL DAY
Memorial Day was originally known as Decoration Day because it was set aside to honor the nation's Civil War dead by decorating their graves. This was first widely observed on May 30, 1868, by proclamation of General John Logan, National Commander of the Grand Army of the Republic.
His order read as follows: "The 30th of May, 1868, is designated for the purpose of strewing with flowers, or otherwise decorating the graves of comrades who died in the defense of their country during the late rebellion, and whose bodies now lie in almost every city, village, and hamlet churchyard in the land."
During the celebration, General James Garfield made a speech at Arlington Cemetery after which five thousand participants decorated the graves of more than twenty thousand Union and Confederate soldiers buried in our National Cemetery. By 1890 Decoration Day was celebrated nationwide.
After WW I the holiday changed to honor all who died in any of our wars. In 1971 congress declared Memorial Day as a national holiday to be celebrated on the last Monday of May. We have two memorials in the vestibule of St. Paul, one for WW I and one for WW II. Those of more recent wars are memorialized in our hearts, until a better memorial is erected. We owe a debt of gratitude to those we remember today. An unnumbered line of splendor, military sacrificing and dying for the life we take so for granted, flows through the history of our nation. We are a privileged people. Only two people ever offered to die for you and me: Jesus Christ and an American on active duty in our military. Join me in expressing your gratitude for both.

I believe in God the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth; and in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord: who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; the third day he rose from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and sitteth at the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.
*The Gloria Patri
Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Ghost; as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen, Amen.
The Call to Prayer
Take this moment to prepare to speak to the One who is more focused upon our hearts than upon our words. One who is more committed to us and our soul’s well being than we are to our body’s comforts and pleasures. One who has shown us by the passion of our Lord Jesus Christ the seriousness with which He makes our appointment. The only One who loves us just because His love is greater than our sin. Free yourself in these moments from your fear-filled secrets by prayerfully confessing them in the presence of our Heavenly Father.

ST. PAUL, DON’T FORGET…
The month of May is “St. Paul Month” at Wynnton Neighborhood Network. This means that we will need to collect and give plentifully to this community based organization. The items that we need to collect are listed as follows: boxed macaroni & cheese, canned green beans, other canned vegetables, canned meat, spaghetti noodles, cereal, toilet tissue, bath soap, powdered laundry detergent, and personal care items. Donations should be left on the round table located just outside the Fellowship Hall.
Thanks for your continued support!
Registration deadline is June 12!!! We are gearing up for our Vacation Bible School, "Operation Overboard,” June 25-29, and your help is needed with decorating. The following are items we need in order to turn St. Paul into an under sea adventure: Flippers, snorkels, goggles, wet suits, aquarium decorations, pool noodles, toy fish (plastic or plush), sea shells, & bubble machine. If you are "lending" items, please be sure to mark them so they can be returned to you.
