By means o f the knur led screw e x t r a c t t h e t o p r o l l s h a f t a s s e m b l y c o m p l e t e w i t h t h e f r o n t b e a r i n g a n d b e a r i n g c o v e r . The d r i v e r o l l and d r iven g e a r c a n b e s e p a r a t e d by removing the 3 f i x i n g screws. U s i n g t h e t o p r o l l e r s h a f t a s a m a n d r e l s e c u r e t h e new d r i v e r o l l t o t h e d r i v e n g e a r . Once t h e a s s e m b l y i s c o m p l e t e r e f i t t h e t o p r o l l e r s h a f t i n t o p o s i t i o n s e c u r i n g t h e a s s e m b l y w i t h t h e b e a r i n g c o v e r by t h e 2 r e t a i n i n g screws.

P r e s s u r e i s t h e n a p p l i e d t o t h e t o p f e e d r o l l by l o w e r i n q t h e t o p g a t e and a d j u s t i n g t h e k n u r l e d screw u n t i l t h e wire i s g r i p p e d s n u g l y b y t h e f e e d r o l l .

The motor r e l a y K 1 i s e n e r g i s e d v i a d i o d e s 1 1 - D l , l l - D 3 a n d r e s i s t o r l l - R 3 . Diode 1 1 - D 4 w i t h r e s i s t o r - c a p a c i t o r n e t w o r k 1 1 - R 6 and l l - C 1 e n s u r e s t h a t K 1 i s t h e l a s t r e l a y i n t h e s e q u e n c e t o e n e r g i s e .
With K 1 e n e r g i s e d , t h e o u t p u t of t h e SCR h y b r i d b r i d g e i s connec ted t o t h e wire d r i v e motor. C a p a c i t o r 1 4 - C 1 i s now p r o v i d e d w i t h a c h a r g i n g p a t h , v i a t r a n s i s t o r 1 4 - H 2 and r e s i s to r 1 4 - R 6 . When t h e c h a r g e i n c a p a c i t o r 1 4 - C 1 r e a c h e s a pre-de termined l e v e l , t h e u n i - j u n c t i o n t r a n s i s t o r 1 4 - H 1 c o n d u c t s , d i s c h a r g i q t h e c a p a c i t o r i n t o t h e p r i m a r y w i n d i n g o f p u l s e t r a n s f o r m e r T I . T h i s c a u s e s a v o l t a g e p u l s e t o a p p e a r a t t h e g a t e s o f t h e two SCR's. The SCR which i s f o r w a r d b i a s e d ( a n o d e p o s i t i v e ) w i l l t u r n on a t t h i s p o i n t . The motor now b e g i n s t o r o t a t e , b u i l d i n g u p t o t h e p r e - s e t s p e e d . T h e amount o f phase-sh i f t i s de te rmined by t h e c h a r g i n g time of 1 4 - C 1 , w h i c h i n t u r n i s de te rmined by t he level of c o n d u c t i o n o f t r a n s i s t o r 1 4 - H 2 . The base v o l t a g e o f 1 4 - H 2 i s c o n t r o l l e d by t h e s p e e d p o t - e n t i o m e t e r s e t t i n g , w h i l e i t s emit ter v o l t a g e i s i n p r o p o r t i o n t o t h e b a c k e . m . f . o f t h e d r i v e m o t o r . On re lease of t h e g u n s w i t c h , the g a s valve i s de -ene rg i sed , mo to r r e l a y K1 opens, and i t s n o r m a l l y c l o s e d c o n t a c t s p l a c e a low res- i s t a n c e across t h e motor a r m a t u r e , p r o v i d i n g d y n a m i c b r a k i n g . Contactor r e l a y K 2 i s h e l d e n e r g i s e d f o r a s h o r t t ime, de t e rmined by t h e s e t t i n g of potentiometer l l - R 5 which forms t h e d i s c h a r g e p a t h f o r c a p a c i t o r l l - C 2 . T h i s i s c a l l e d b u r n - b a c k time, and h a s t h e e f f e c t o f p r e v e n t i n g t h e w e l d i n g wire f r o m " f r e e z i n g i n the we ld pudd le a t t h e e n d of a weld.
