A delegation comprising President Boris, VP Anne and many RCE Members and Friends will depart Melbourne Thursday evening heading to Myanmar. A Brief Paul Harris History on the Occasion of his Birthday It was February 23rd 1905. The aeroplane had yet to stay aloft more than a few minutes, the first cinema had not yet opened and Norway and Sweden were peacefully terminating their union. On this particular day, a Chicago lawyer, Paul P. Harris, called three friends to a meeting. What he had in mind was a club that would kindle fellowship among members of the business community. He was tired of meetings filled with other lawyers, talking about the things that only lawyers talk about. He wanted to find in the large city the kind of friendly spirit and helpfulness that he had known in the small towns where he had grown up -- the spirit to reach out in service to others less fortunate and to share fellowship with others in different professions. The four businessmen didn't decide then and there to call them- selves a Rotary club, but their get-together was, in fact, the first meeting of the world's first Rotary club and the first service club in the world. As they continued to meet, adding others to the group, they rotated their meetings among the members' places of business, hence the name. It was also Paul’s thought that the first club should represent a cross-section of the business and professional life of the community. From this beginning, Rotary developed into what it is today.

Operation Cleft Lip & Palate

DISTRICT 9800 GRANT – CLEFT PALATE OPERATIONS – BANGLADESH

The Club was successful in receiving a District Grant for Cleft Palate operations in Bangladesh, the

operations have now been completed.

A summary of the outcomes follow:

Operation Cleft provides free cleft repair surgery for underprivileged children in Bangladesh. Until recently there were

only a small number of Plastic Surgery Units at Medical Training Colleges in Bangladesh. Last year another 9 units were

established however there is a lack of qualified Professors to teach the medical students. In order to assist in the

development of plastic surgery across the country, Operation Cleft conducted a number of training camps at each of

these new units.

The District 9800 Grant - Cleft Palate Operations funded a new surgical training camp at the Bogra Shaheed Zia Medical

College & Hospital, Bangladesh from 21 February to 23 February, 2014.

Attending the camp for surgical assessment were 27 children - 9 were deemed unfit for surgery at that time. Of the 9: 4

were mal nourished and underweight, 2 were suffering from pulmonary infection and the other 3 had problems other

than cleft lip or palate. All were referred for appropriate treatment.

Through the hospitals community health network, Centre for Disability in Development (CDD) will maintain contact with

the 6 cleft patients and monitor their progress in order to re-schedule them for surgery when next the Operation Cleft

surgical team visits.

The surgical intervention training camps are not just about the number of children who will be operated on, but includes

other really important priorities such as:

Training for local surgeons, medical staff and students

Developing a relationship with a new venue, so that long term our surgeons can visit regularly to help children who present with a cleft condition in this area

Training of Community Health Workers, who then visit patient’s pre and post op in the villages to monitor their progress.

The camps are all about helping underprivileged families in rural Bangladesh, ensuring sustainability and assisting with

professional development to improve knowledge and skills of the medical infrastructure. All of these things ultimately

have a huge long term impact not only on the people who are directly involved but also on surrounding communities.

By conducting this initial camp a relationship has been established with the hospital and staff enabling Operation Cleft

surgeons to make regular visits for further education and training of residents and students. This will in turn allow the

hospital to accept as patients, children who are in need of surgical repair of cleft lips or cleft palates. This will be great for

the surrounding areas as up until now there was nowhere for these patients to go. For medical attention their only

option was to travel the long distance to Dhaka (approx. 10 hours by train and ferry).

The beneficiaries of this District Grant were not only the 18 children who were operated on, but the surgeons,

occupational therapists, community health workers, theatre staff and post op medical staff who participated. Operation

Cleft surgeons will now visit this facility regularly as consultants to train medical staff in cleft repair surgery and to

operate on patients who have presented with this condition and have been wait listed pending the consulting surgeons

return visit.

Men’s Shed Update – by Simon Cookson

RCEss, and more recently delegates from Strathmore and Nth Essendon Rotary Clubs have agreed to work together to gain monies from the Moonee Valley Council and hopefully a successful grant

application from the Strathmore Community Bank/Bendigo Bank.

The site for the “Men’s Shed” is still being discussed as there are two possible options.

Simon, Alistair Fraser, Lisa Lowcock and a member from each of the other clubs recently met at council chambers with Mayor, Jan Chantry and three council officers to discuss a plan to move this project along in the next 6-12 months.

Mayor Chantry has been working with Simon on this project for the previous 18 months after Simon

had initially spoken to her about getting this up and running in our clubs area of influence.

Simon had asked Alistair Fraser to help with all the meetings and grant applications due to Alistair’s

history in council and many years’ experience dealing with city hall.

Unfortunately things had stalled with the unsuccessful initial application for funds from Dept. of

Human Services.

After our recent meeting at council, Mayor Chantry has now suggested Council budget $65,000 towards this project to get it up and running.

The $65,000 has been approved in principal amongst council members and we are awaiting an

official announcement from council to that effect.

Incoming President Lisa is keen to keep the ball rolling in her presidential year as are Simon and

Alistair keen to see the end result.

This could be an “ALL OF CLUB” project, ongoing for many years that can also unify and involve all

our other local Rotary clubs.

A Charity close to Stephen Roe’s Soul:

Soles4Souls Australia (The Butterfly Movement Ltd) was established in 2011 and is based on the theory that when a butterfly flaps its wings on one side of the world it can create a hurricane on the other side. The Butterfly Movement is about making our impact on the world and the lives of others, whether they live next door or across oceans, a positive one.

Soles4Souls Australia collect gently worn and new shoes for children, women and men in need around the world both in Australia and abroad, who are disadvantaged because they do not own shoes or have inadequate footwear.

Shoes improve health and create opportunities including schooling, employment and sport.

The original goal for our inaugural appeal which ran from September 24 until December 24, 2011 was for 10,000 pairs of shoes to be donated over the three month period. The support and interest in the shoe drive saw more than 54,000 pairs of shoes donated from all states and territories in Australia. Today, in total more than 100,000 pairs of shoes have been donated and distributed to people in need.
