15th Delegation to Myanmar - Update President Boris:

I previously advised of the moving ceremony at Thanbyuzayat War

Cemetery where we laid a wreath to commemorate the fallen.

Several Rotarians and Friends were interested in the content of the speech I

delivered during the Thanbyuzayat Ceremony. Seek no further as here’s the

content.

“This cemetery is a memorial to soldiers who died in the Second World War. Within the country of Myanmar, there are many of these cemeteries that

stand as individual sites and as a collective to acknowledge the human contribution to the maintenance of freedom. The sites do not celebrate war but rather the human attributes of courage, loyalty and sacrifice. It is not widely known that five Indian Victoria Cross recipients are buried in war graves in Myanmar. We are truly honoured to be here today in their presence and with their comrades in arms. The service personnel buried at this site had parents, brothers and sisters, some of the older ones were married and were parents. Their sacrifice was felt at all levels from their immediate families all the way through their nation. Their service to others has been enduring and is evidenced today by the

presence of a community based service organisation Rotary Club Essendon paying respect at this site.” “Lest we forget.”

On Friday we were invited by Bronte Moules, Ambassador, Australian

Embassy Yangon to participate in the ANZAC Day Dawn Service at the

Yangon War Cemetery. I was privileged to be one of 40 invited to lay a

wreath at the Service, on behalf of the RCE.

This was indeed a moving moment.

Both I and VP Anne Rogers were subsequently interviewed for a news story

which went to air on Myanmar National TV.

In the next several issues of Contact, further reports and images will be

published highlighting the work of the International Committee of the RC

Essendon in Myanmar. I look forward to returning to a much more hospitable

climate and to seeing all Rotarians at the next RCE Meeting.

DIK in Action

DIK Working Bee by Steve Roe Several members and friends recently spent a few hours helping out at the Footscray DIK store. We were kept busy sorting and repacking a wall of boxes full of clothing, as well as loading school desks onto pallets ready for shipment. New members Jenny and Jane were also on hand with their daughters working on goods to be shipped to a hospital in Battambang in Cambodia (see Contact Issue 36).

The staff at DIK were very happy with our assistance and another working bee is planned for later in the year. The overflowing store holds an amazing array of equipment and supplies available for all types of projects, both domestic and international and is a very impressive operation of which all in D9800 can be proud. The RCEss continues to provide financial support for the store through an annual contribution to store rental and members who have not yet visited are most welcome to do so. Water How many folks do you know who say they don't want to drink anything before going to bed because they'll have to get up during the night!! Heart Attack and Water - I never knew all of this ! Interesting.......Something else I didn't know ... I asked my Doctor why do people need to urinate so much at night time. Answer from my Cardiac Doctor Gravity holds water in the lower part of your body when you are upright (legs swell). When you lie down and the lower body (legs and etc) seeks level with the kidneys, it is then that the kidneys remove the water because it is easier. This then ties in with the last statement!

I knew you need your minimum water to help flush the toxins out of your body, but this was news to me. Correct time to drink water... Very Important. From A Cardiac Specialist! Drinking water at a certain time maximizes its effectiveness on the body: 2 glasses of water after waking up - helps activate internal organs. 1 glass of water 30 minutes before a meal - helps digestion. 1 glass of water before taking a bath - helps lower blood pressure. 1 glass of water before going to bed - avoids stroke or heart attack I can also add to this... My Physician told me that water at bed time will also help prevent night time leg cramps. Your leg muscles are seeking hydration when they cramp and wake you up with a Charlie Horse. A Cardiologist has stated that if each person after receiving this, sends it to 10 people, probably one life could be saved! I have already shared this information. What about you? Will you forward this message. It "MAY" save lives! "Life is a ONE time gift".!!!!!

c. Missing In “Öther” Action – Peter Duras

Haven't seen much of Peter Duras lately ? Nobody has , including wife Sue . He's been working over 50 hours a week for the last 10 weeks , painting and project managing the refurbishment of the new Asylum Seeker Resource Centre in Footscray . The gutting and refit of a rundown office block has involved tradies and large numbers of volunteers, filling 30 x 20ft. skips, applying over 500 litres of paint , and fitting 20 kilometres of wiring . Trade goodwill , corporate support , the donation of office furniture and volunteer labour has been valued at $2 million , transforming the tired building into a vibrant centre for support and education . The centre will open on May 1st. , but works will continue for another month . The ASRC receives no government funding , but aims to maintain hope and assist those it serves to make a positive contribution to Australia's future . Not everyone's political cup of tea , but Peter believes his 500 hours has been time well spent .

Please give Pete a ring on 0413 599 121 if you have any queries .

Odd WW II facts con’t

10. Among the first 'Germans' captured at Normandy were several Koreans. They had been forced to fight for the Japanese Army until they were captured by the Russians and forced to fight for the Russian Army until they were captured by the Germans and forced to fight for the German Army until they were captured by the US Army.

11. Following a massive naval bombardment, 35,000 United States and Canadian troops stormed ashore at Kiska, in the Aleutian Islands . 21 troops were killed in the assault on the island....... It could have been worse if there had actually been any Japanese on the island.

12. The last marine killed in WW2 was killed by a can of spam. He was on the ground as a POW in Japan when rescue flights dropping food and supplies came over, the package came apart in the air and a stray can of spam hit him and killed him.

Health Tip:

Panadol/Panadene/Nurofen If you find Panadol ineffective, maybe try half to one quarter the recommended dosage of Panadene for relief. It may not work but it’s worth a try! Beware of taking Nurofen if you’re on Blood Pressure medication. Seek Doctor or Chemist

advice first.

This is a remarkable and inspiring speech. J K Rowling's speech is essentially about the benefits
