As your President I am proud to have been involved in helping to guide SEESA forward over the past years. The 2017 AGM will soon be upon us and I have one request to all of you, our loyal membership. Please help your Board and me a plan our future. If you are truly interested in the future of SEESA consider joining us to help guide SEESA through the next few years. Put your name forward to become involved with your Board of Directors. We are looking for people who want to keep SEESA as one of the premier centers in the city of Edmonton. Please show your interest to me or to Sheila Clifford-MacKay. We will be happy to start you on the way to new activities that will be both satisfying and beneficial to you and our community.

Kim’s Korner Happy 2017! The new year has started and winter programs are in full swing. Our medical students are back and eager to participate and learn.

We now have 3 sets of lockers in the building. Lockers are two sizes larger for items such as badminton racquets and smaller ones for purses and shoes. These are for day use while you are in the building. You must supply your own lock and be responsible to empty the locker prior to leaving SEESA.

Why oh why do we need to fill out those membership forms year after year!?? We hear this often at the front desk. What we are asking you to

check is that all the information we have is current. And that your emergency contacts information is also correct and current. I have an example of something that happens once in a while here at SEESA: we received a call from a local mall that has one of our

members keys and wallet at their lost and found—the key chain has a SEESA fob on it so they phone us. The member’s number is no longer in service and the emergency contact is out of date as well. SIGH—we could have helped this member but the information was out of date. Please remember to let us know when your information changes. And thanks for updating your form every (sigh) year!

We are getting close to AGM time again—Yippee! Please “save the date” the meeting is short and very informative. If you are thinking about running for a position on our Awesome Board—please leave your information at the front desk for Sheila Clifford-MacKay. See you on March 8 at 2 pm! (oh and there is wine and cheese after!)

OUTREACH NEWS I hope everyone had a wonderful Christmas and happy New Year! Outreach activities are continuing as scheduled: Social Circle meets every Thursday from 11:00 am to noon (all are welcome to attend), then moves to the cafeteria to have lunch together. Care Circle meets on the 1st and 3rd Mondays of the month from 1:00 to 3:00 pm — Jan. 16, Feb. 6, March 6, March 20 — open to anyone experiencing a loss. Ins, Outs and Allies on the 2nd and 4th Mondays of the month from 1:00 to 3:00 pm — Jan. 23, Feb. 13, Feb. 27, Mar. 13, Mar. 27. Other Services include providing assistance with completing forms, home and hospital visits, coordinating the Friendly Visitor program, etc. Credit Checks Many financial advisors recommend regularly checking your credit reports. Credit reports provide information about any loans or credit cards you have. This may help prevent identity theft, or recognize it early. There are two primary credit check agencies in Canada: Transunion Canada, www.transunion.ca, and Equifax Canada, www.equifax.ca. Both of them provide free credit checks when the form is completed and mailed in. Both also provide services at a cost, such as monthly monitoring. Here we are in January, a time to look back on what has been, and a time to look forward at what is hoped and planned for. We finished our fall schedule in November. Alida Van Braeden was emcee at St Joseph’s. Entertainment during choir breaks was provided by Dale Wilkie and Colleen Ryan singing “Bye Bye Blackbird” and “I’m Looking Over a Four Leaf Clover”. Dorothy Munro and Dee Litke sang “ You’ll Never Know” and “I’m Going to Sit Right Down and Write Myself a Letter” (e-mail of course!). Churchill Manor hosted our last sing-out for the season. Caren Lang-Rosenau chaired the program. The breaks were ably filled by Vivian Lundgren singing “It Might Be You” Dee Turner sang “Walking After Midnight” Then they joined and sang together “ Sweet Violet” and “Forever Young”. We then focused on our Christmas performances which we presented at the suppers at SEESA in December. There are people that work behind the scenes that help the choir at our performances. A special word of thanks goes to Merrill Sandahl who does some heavy lifting for us by bringing the keyboard and sound system to our sing-outs. He also sets up the sound system with microphones and a maze of wires, the better for our audience to hear us. We are also grateful that not instituted “carrying charges”! As always, Anne Marshall has put together exciting repertoire for our spring schedule featuring songs of Canada in celebration of our country’s 150th birthday. We are hard at work in preparation for these sing-outs, our joy and we trust, for the enjoyment by our audiences. - Elsie Combs

At the AGM 2016 we challenged every SEESA Member to set aside .25¢ a day

Feb 1 we have been collecting for 306 days. That’s $76.50 out of the total $91.25. At the time, we were needing a roof.

No more! The City of Edmonton is now footing that bill

We are still collecting and all the money is now going into our

needed. If you donated to the roof and do not want your

money delegated in this way; you have until February 17, 2017 to request a refund. You will need to submit your original receipt to Kimberly

Olive Legacy Sherr’s mom, Olive Wadson, loved coming to her charity of

choice, SEESA. As a memorial tribute, Sherr will donate

away she donates on their behalf. Last year that amounted

Massachusetts Calling? Chances are it’s a message from SEESA

We have wonderful tool at our disposal: an

automated message system we have nicknamed

Sam which sends detailed messages to our

members by telephone. The downfall is that the

number displayed comes up as a 1-617——

number which is out of Boston, Massachusetts , so

do not be alarmed when you see it.

The message is an automated voice and

each message will begin with “This is SAM—the

SEESA Automated Message system” . . . The

message will always repeat and we will say our

phone number at the conclusion of the message.

The system is tied into the MySeniorCenter

system. Your part is to remember to swipe your

fob each and every time you attend a club, class,

monthly dinner or event. It is so easy to contact

the members who ’fobbed” in for classes, but we

have to personally call many, many

members who have not been using the

system.

2016 TAX CLINICS

Tax clinics will be held here at SEESA on March 7, 16, 22, & 30

Appointments are 25 minutes each for one return. Couples wishing to do their taxes together need to book two consecutive

appointments.

Tax clinics are a community service designed to assist low-income seniors

complete their annual personal tax returns. Volunteers from the Chartered Accountants

of Alberta take time out of the busiest season of their year to offer this service.

This service is only open to those individuals whose total incomes fall into the following

earnings categories and can be substantiated through official tax information

slips:

With no dependent $30,000 or less With dependents $50,000 or less

All interest income, investment income (US or Canadian) etc., is considered as income

and is subject to the income guidelines.

Those individuals who have self-employment income, rental income or real estate holdings (land and/or buildings, including a house or condo that provides rental income) are not

eligible for free income tax return preparation, regardless of the amount of income. Also, we are unable to complete

returns for clients who have passed away, as these returns are too time consuming to be

completed in the time allotted.

Appointments are on a first come first served basis and range from 6 pm to 8:35 pm.

Distillery Tour and Lunch Thursday March 16th

Time: Bus departs SEESA: 10:30am Return time to SEESA: approx. 2pm

Cost: $47 members/$57 Non-members Includes: lunch, gratuities, bus (coach or mini coach) and distillery tour

Maximum number of participants: 25

Deadline to register: Weds, March 1st 4 pm. Please pay at SEESA front desk.

Description: We will head to Nisku to Big Rig Craft Distillery. Your tour will cover how liquor is produced, including processes using raw local grain, fermentation, distillation and final packaging. Afterward you

will get a chance to sample the numerous products produced. Products will also be available for purchase. Lunch will be catered by a local BBQ company. Lunch includes your choice of either pulled pork or smoked chicken salad on a bun plus your choice of home-made mac n cheese or baked beans. Dessert, coffee, bottled water and gratuities are included. Please indicate your food choices when you sign up.

February 2017 Volunteer Voice Did you know that… as the Entertainment Coordinator for Monthly Dinners you get a discounted ticket? Not a bad perk... and, since some dinners enjoy traditions such as bingo or music by our Melody Singers, it’s only half a dozen or so performances to handle each year. We are looking for someone to start booking for April’s monthly dinner and afterward.

Speaking of Books... Our members are so generous in donating books to the John Sandercock Library that we need more help on the Library

Committee! Will you help us solve this “problem”? Front Desk Receptionist Welcome new FDR, Glenys MacKenzie, who is now working two Monday evenings a month as well as helping out as needed on other shifts. We are always looking for help in the busy and social FDR position, so don’t hesitate to talk to me about giving it a try.

How Does Tillie’s Run? If you’ve had a beverage or a bite to eat in Tillie’s café, you appreciate the cashiers and helpers filling plates and bowls at the servery. Come and try a shift and fob in one

of the 120 Food Services shifts fobbed in each week! We have several regular shift vacancies and are always looking for those who can work on a “casual” basis to sub. Ask current volunteers and you’ll hear what a fun place it is to work! Sherr Wadson Coordinator of Volunteers

Everyone loves a pot luck dinner. Each person prepares one dish to share and everyone samples a wide variety of things. The best part are the surprises because you never know what you are going to get at a potluck!

This February we are having three. On Thursday, February 2nd celebrate Chinese New Year - this annual potluck has now become a tradition and a tasty one at that. Sunday, February 5th, as part of the Line Dance Social participants are invited to bring a snack to share. Then on February 24 be-fore our Canada 150 Playlist Scavenger Hunt let’s get together to eat before we play.

News From Community Contributors

The Quilters and Crafters had another successful and productive year. Knitters Claire K., Claire L., Catherine, Margaret, Iris, and Marjorie took on the project of knitting 52 hats for Meals on Wheels for their drivers.

Pictured above Caitlin and Ashley from Meals on Wheels are presented with the hats by the Knitters (absent from the picture were Catherine and Iris). Glenda, Maureen and Mary knit twenty dishcloths which were donated to Meals on Wheels for their Christmas gifts for clients. Betty, Elizabeth, Judy, Irene, Claire K., Maureen, and Marjorie were busy sewing quilts, placemats, runners, hot mats, microwave pot holders, aprons, fancy bags, etc to raise money for SEESA (the quilters also finished two quilts for SEESA members who are no longer able to sew). Medical student, Dave, was welcomed to the group and was taught to knit a dishcloth.

December Birthday Party

Thirty-one Birthday celebrants along with their guests enjoyed an afternoon of fantastic entertainment by SEESA’s Music Makers. The Birthday Committee was thrilled to see long-time Birthday Party volunteer, Shirley Zygun return, though she came to celebrate her own birthday, but could not stop helping out a little (it’s in her nature).

Three members were awarded their Lifetime Memberships by Board Secretary Norma Marion. Congratulations to Ethel Reid, Ken Gough and Millie Knight.

January Birthday Party The SEESA Music Makers started off the 2017 year of Birthday Party entertainment with a wide variety musical selections and toe-tapping favourites. We had a smaller than expected crowd of twenty-three celebrants

and their guests. Our Membership Chair, Joan Brady, was on hand to award the first Lifetime Membership of 2017 to Jean Dempsey.

Bonnie Doon Community League volunteers host a monthly Thursday get-together for seniors at Bonnie Doon Hall (9240 93 Street). Everyone is welcome to watch National Film Board documentaries followed by contemporary short animations. The films start at 10:30 am and are free to attend. A light lunch is served at 11:45 for $2/person. Sponsors help us maintain our affordable program.

In conjunction with Canada’s 150th birthday, there is a new ParticipACTION challenge: the 150 Playlist which according to their website is “the ultimate list of all the physical activities that make us Canadian”. The challenge is simple: to try as many physical activities on the list as possible. Just take a look through the SEESA Program Guide and you will find we have a wide variety of activities to get you well on your way to achieving this goal: Table Tennis, Walking, Folk Dance/Cultural (Zumba Gold & Cardio Salsa), Yoga, Billiards, Drumming, Tai Chi, (Soft) Pilates, Floor Shuffleboard, Dancing, Badminton, PickleBall, (Floor) Curling and coming back in the Spring Gardening and Bocce Ball.

In upcoming months we are also planning to do some of the other activities on the list such as a scavenger hunt (on February 24), a game of tag, dodgeball, hopscotch, flying kites, swinging in the park, hide and seek and more. BOOK SALE BEGINS OCT 9

Programing Notes Welcome to this New Year of Programming at SEESA! As most of you already know, my name is Peggy Hansen and I have taken on the role of Program Manager of SEESA classes and clubs. I am thrilled to be working with each of you towards our common goal of creating and maintaining quality programming for the seniors and guests who make our centre what it is. Our Winter programming is set from January to March. This session offers 70 different classes and 30 different clubs that you can be involved with. Unfortunately, some of the classes did not have enough registrants in them this time around and so they needed to be cancelled. I will try to offer them again in the Spring session so keep an eye on the Newsletter and the Spring Program Guide when it becomes available for some of those classes to be brought back.

The Spring session for classes begins in April and runs until the end of June. SAVE THE DATE - Registration Day will be on Saturday, March 11. More information will be available in the next Newsletter.

SEESA is always looking to update our programming. If there is a class you are interested in taking and don’t see it offered please have the conversation with me and I can look at perhaps getting it implemented. Also, if you have any positive feedback or constructive suggestions about your instructors, classes or clubs please let me know. As a staff member I am not available to attend all the classes or clubs so any feed-back is appreciated.
