Medusa: M ees are greener than the !egean Sea.

Narrator: On -ednesda% she boasted to everone at the public garden.

Medusa: M lips are redder than the reddest rose.

People in the garden: Oh% Medusa% roses are nothing compared to ou&

Narrator: -hen she $asn)t bus sharing her thoughts about her beaut $ith all $ho

passed b% Medusa $ould gae lovingl at her reflection in her hand mirror.

Medusa: /to hand mirror $hile brushing her hair0 I admire mself% I am so beautiful. 'ven

m reflection in the $indo$ and in the $ater sho$s m beaut.

Narrator: On and on Medusa $ent about her beaut to anone and everone $ho

stopped long enough to hear her # until one da $hen she made her first visit to the

Parthenon $ith her friends.

Narrator: 'verone $ho entered $as astonished b the beaut of the place and couldn)t

help but thin( of ho$ grateful the $ere to !thena% goddess of $isdom% for inspiring

them and for $atching over their cit of !thens. 'verone% that is% e4cept Medusa.

Medusa: $)hispering& I could have made a much better sub5ect for the sculptor than

!thena had.

Narrator: -hen Medusa sa$ the art$or(% she said.

Medusa: The artist did a fine 5ob considering the goddess)s thic( eebro$s.

Narrator: *ut imagine ho$ much more $onderful the painting $ould be if it $as of

someone as delicate as Medusa. -hen Medusa reached the altar she sighed happil and

said.

Medusa: M this is a beautiful temple. It is a shame it $as $asted on !thena% I am so

much prettier than she is 6 perhaps some da people $ill build an even grander temple

to m beaut.

Narrator: Medusa)s friends gre$ pale. The priestesses $ho overheard Medusa gasped.

-hispers ran through all the people in the temple $ho 7uic(l began to leave%.e4cept for

Medusa $ho $as so bus loo(ing proudl at her reflection in the large brone doors that

she hadn)t noticed the departure of everone else. Suddenl% instead of her o$n features%

it $as the face of !thena that Medusa sa$ reflected bac( at her.

!thena: $to Medusa& 8ain and foolish girl. ,ou thin( ou are prettier than I am& I doubt it

to be true% but even if it $ere # there is more to life than beaut alone. -hile others $or(

and pla and learn% ou do little but boast and admire ourself&

Medusa: *ut% !thena% m beaut is an inspiration to those around me. I ma(e their lives

better b simpl loo(ing so lovel.

Narrator: *ut !thena silenced her $ith a frustrated $ave.

!thena: Nonsense. *eaut fades s$iftl in all mortals. It does not comfort the sic(% teach

the uns(illed or feed the hungr. !nd b m po$ers% our loveliness shall be stripped

a$a completel. ,our fate shall serve as a reminder to others to control their pride.

Narrator: !nd $ith those $ords Medusa)s face changed to that of a hideous monster. 9er

hair t$isted and thic(ened into horrible sna(es that hissed and fought each other atop

her head.

!thena: Medusa% for our pride this has been done. ,our face is no$ so terrible to behold

that the mere sight of it $ill turn a man to stone& 'ven ou% Medusa% should ou see(

our reflection% shall turn to roc( the instant ou see our face.. No$% $ith our hair of

sna(es go live $ith the blind monsters # the gorgon sisters # at the ends of the earth%

so that no innocents $ould be accidentall turned to stone at the sight of ou.

Medusa: $shouting& Nooo% $hat have ou done to me% !thena& I am the most beautiful%

ou are 5ealous of me& I $ill be beautiful forever% and ou $ill not change that&
