The Pyrenees are one of the youngest mountain ranges in Europe, an area that conserves places with many well-defined features. Apart from its natural interest, the range is of supreme historical significance, forming the border between Catalonia, France and Andorra, and between the Spanish and French states.Over the last fifty years, tourism in the Pyrenees has largely developed around the mountain resorts, skiing, and other nature and sporting activities. The name “Pirineu de Girona” covers the nearly three thousand-metre high Pyrenees and the pre-Pyrenean mountain areas in Girona province, which include the fascinating landscape of the Garrotxa Volcanic Area Nature Park and part of the mountain range in Cadí-Moixeró Nature Park. Throughout the Girona Pyrenees there are also several valleys carved out by some of the main rivers of Catalonia, e.g. Cerdanya, Ribes, Bas, Núria and Camprodon valleys. The main tourist activities in Pirineu de Girona revolve around skiing and other snow sports in winter and outdoor nature activities in summer. Pirineu de Girona comprises Cerdanya, Ripollès and Garrotxa counties.
Skiing as a leisure sport in Spain originally started in the Girona Pyrenees, with the first reference to skiers in the area dating back to 1908, according to the Catalan Hiking Centre newsletter of the time.Four Alpine ski resorts and one cross-country ski resort (Guils Fontanera) make up the fivefold Pirineu de Girona winter sports options. La Molina, Masella, Vall de Núria and Vallter 2000 are all classic Catalan ski resorts, currently undergoing a profound evolution with improvements on services where the link-up between La Molina and Masella has created the largest ski domain in the Pyrenees, with a surface of over 135 kilometres. The ski resorts of the Girona counties practically overlook the Mediterranean, where the temperate climate and clear sunny skies provide another advantage for pleasurable, comfortable skiing. When the winter sports season ends, many of these ski resorts adapt their facilities for mountain activity programmes (hiking, climbing, mountain biking, horse-riding etc.). However, we must not overlook other equally important options suitable for the general public, such as the wide range of cultural events, fine cuisine, golf tourism, and health & wellness options.Pirineu de Girona hotel accommodation is concentrated at the foot of the ski slopes in the mountain resorts, and in the towns and villages of the area, with mainly small, family-run establishments. There are also many campsites, rural tourism houses, holiday apartments, youth hostels and mountain refuges.

This eminently Pyrenean territory is one of the largest valleys in Europe, surrounded by spectacular mountain peaks with a minimum altitude of one thousand metres. Cerdanya is the snow sports county par excellence, with well-known ski resorts (La Molina, Masella and Guils Fontanera) that were once the first of their kind in Spain. The county borders with France, and has one of the most frequented passes over the Pyrenees.
A profoundly traditional Pyrenean area made up of several different valleys, which played an important role in the forging and the history of Catalonia. The major Romanesque monasteries (Santa Maria de Ripoll and Sant Joan de les Abadesses) and the sanctuary at Núria all had great religious and political significance over the centuries. The county also boasts Vall de Núria and Vallter 2000 ski resorts.
A pre-Pyrenean county famous for its Volcanic Area Nature Park, which endows it with distinctive natural features, unique in Europe. Garrotxa boasts many charming villages and towns known for their history, culture and gastronomy, such as Besalú, Santa Pau, La Vall d’en Bas and the county capital Olot, near which we can enjoy an outburst of nature in the Fageda d’en Jordà beech wood.
