The driving licences of expatriates in the Kingdom

should be renewed every two years, just like their residency permits, to prevent the misuse of traffic laws, urged MP Jalal Kadhim. As of now, driving licences come with a five-year validity.

“The current legal situation has proved its inability to deter foreigners from misusing the system,” MP Jalal Kadhim said in an interview to a local Arabic daily.

He also revealed that he has submitted a bill to the Council for the purpose.

“Many foreigners are working illegally in the Kingdom as

drivers in various sectors including transportation, retail, constructions and services,” the MP said adding: “This is having a negative impact on the businesses owned by the Bahrainis.”

He also suggested it as one of the reasons for the traffic congestions in the Kingdom, as the foreigners who own driving licences also own vehicles here.

Supporting his claims, the MP said that there are “over 60,000 irregular workers in Bahrain, who holds driving licences valid for five years, unlike residency permits.”

As a solution, he suggested linking driving licence validity and their residency permits.

This, according to him, will not only solve the issue of illegal workers in the Kingdom but also bring more revenues to the state coffers.

Citing a recent statement by the Interior Minister Lieutenant General Shaikh Rashid bin Abdulla Al Khalifa, the MP said that there are 307,000 non-Bahrainis in the Kingdom with driving licences, which includes 256,000 private vehicles licences, when compared with the number of   383,000 Bahraini drivers and 5,000 GCC nationals.

However, the bill will come up for discussion only during the final  legislative  term, which is expected to begin in October this year.

Janakpur

At least 175 people have died and thousands have

fled their homes as monsoon floods swept across Nepal, India and Bangladesh, officials said yesterday, warning the toll could rise as the extent of the damage becomes clear.

Three days of relentless downpours sparked flash floods and landslides that have killed at least 80 people in Nepal, 73 across northern and eastern India and 22 in Bangladesh.

Around 200,000 people are living in emergency camps in Assam in northeast India, which suffers frequent flooding during the annual monsoon rains.

Another 15,000 have had to leave their homes in the eastern state of Bihar, which borders Nepal and where one official said seven rivers were at danger levels.

Large parts of the state were submerged in 2008 when a river burst its banks across the border in Nepal, with the two countries trading blame for the disaster.

All trains to the northeast have been suspended until Wednesday, with sections of the track completely submerged in water, Indian railway spokesman Anil Saxena said.

In Nepal, ariel photos showed huge swathes of land in the southeast still underwater Monday afternoon.

Police said over 48,000 homes have been totally submerged by the floods across Nepal’s southern planes.

As emergency workers struggled to reach far-flung areas, the country’s home ministry said another 36 people were missing, presumed dead, revising down an earlier count after more bodies were found.

The Nepal Red Cross warned that shortages of

safe drinking water and food could create a humanitarian crisis in the impoverished Himalayan country.

“In many parts of the country there is a scarcity of safe drinking water creating a high risk of health hazards,” spokesman Dibya Raj Poudel told AFP.

In India, emergency workers were scouring the area hit by a massive landslide that swept two passenger buses into a deep gorge on Sunday, killing at least 46 people in the mountainous northern state of Himachal

Pradesh.In the neighbouring state

of Uttarakhand -- which also borders Nepal -- three people were killed in a landslide late Sunday triggered by heavy rains, local police official Ajay Joshi said.

Bangladesh deployed troops to shore up embankments in the north of the country, where flooding has killed 22 people.

Local  government administrator Kazi Hasan Ahmed said up to 700,000 people had been marooned by flood waters after rivers burst

their banks following days of heavy rain.

“We’ve not seen such severe floods in Dinajpur since 1988,” he said, referring to the worst-hit district.

“The town protection embankment was washed away by flood water, submerging most of the main town.”

The government’s Flood Forecasting and Warning Centre warned that water levels in some major rivers would continue to rise over the next 72 hours, raising fears the flooding could spread.

Egypt opens crossing for Palestinian pilgrims

Man executed for rape, murder of 4-year-old

Gaza City

Egypt reopened its border with the Gaza Strip

yesterday for the first time in months to allow pilgrims from the blockaded Palestinian enclave to travel to Mecca for the hajj, authorities said.

“The crossing was reopened this morning for four days in one direction for 2,500 pilgrims,” Hisham Adwan, director of information at the crossings authority of the Hamas-run interior ministry, said.

“About 800 pilgrims will leave the strip today,” he added, saying they had all already received Saudi visas.

The Rafah crossing with Egypt has been largely closed in recent years apart from occasional openings.

Israel has also maintained a crippling blockade on Gaza for a decade that it says is necessary to stop Islamist movement Hamas, which rules the strip, from obtaining weapons or materials that could be used to make them.

Sanaa

Yemenis gathered yesterday in the rebel-

held capital to witness the putting to death of a man convicted of raping and killing a child, in the second such public execution in weeks.

Hussein al-Saket, 22, was found guilty of abducting, raping and murdering a four-year-old girl, who he later buried, said Rajeh Ezzedine, a judge who attended the execution.

Ali Ayedh, the victim’s uncle, said Saket “took part in the search for the girl before being unmasked” during the police investigation.

He said his public

execution would act as a “deterrent for criminals”.

Saket was placed face down on Tahrir square in Sanaa, which the Shiite Huthi rebels have controlled since 2014.

A policeman shot him dead through the back with five bullets aiming for the heart, before his body was strung up on the end of a crane.

On July 31, another man was executed in the same square after being convicted of raping and murdering a three-year-old girl.

Both executions have been framed as an example of the rebels’ efforts to combat crime in their areas.

The daughter of one of Malaysia’s most powerful sultans married her Dutch fiance Monday in a tradition-filled ceremony during a day of lavish celebrations witnessed by crowds of excited well-wishers.

Dubai

Egyptian stock markets yesterday fell for the

fifth straight day of trading, while weak earning at several companies in Dubai weighed on the stock index there.

Egypt’s index fell 1.1 per cent to 13,135 points, with its technical outlook continuing to deteriorate; it fell below its July low of 13,261 points as well as support on its 100-day average, now at 13,167 points.

Data released at the end of last week showed annual urban inflation in July rose to 33.0pc, its highest level in decades, from 29.8pc in June.

Dubai’s index lost 0.8pc as DAMAC Properties dropped 2.0pc after reporting a second-quarter net profit of 701.3m dirhams ($190.9m), down 20.9pc from a year ago.

Builder Drake & Scull declined

3.2pc after it made a second-quarter net attributable loss of 182.7m dirhams ($49.8m), widely missing Arqaam Capital’s estimate of a loss of 48m and only slightly narrower than the year-ago loss of 207.6m dirhams.

The company also said it had terminated the services of its chief executive, Wael Allan. It did not name a new CEO.

GFH Financial, the most actively traded stock, plunged 10pc despite reporting a second-quarter profit of $30.2m, a leap from $5.5m a year ago.

“Fundamentals are in decent shape, and it has a good cash position - what might have driven the price down is disappointment because it did not announce a cash dividend,” said one trader.

In Abu Dhabi, Waha Capital fell 2.2pc after the investment firm reported its second-quarter

net attributable profit fell 26.5pc to 95.6m dirhams.

Dana Gas lost 4.8pc ahead of its quarterly results, expected to be announced on Tuesday. The Abu Dhabi index fell 0.5pc.

The Saudi index edged down 0.3pc as half of the 12 listed banks fell; the largest by market value, Al Rajhi , fell 0.2pc.

Telecommunications firm Etihad Etisalat (Mobily), edged up 0.3pc, outperforming its rivals, after saying it had signed an agreement with Nokia, Huawei and Ericsson to modernise its network.

Mobily expects the agreements to cost about 2.4 billion riyals ($640m) over the next three years and said funding would come from the company’s cash flow and available facilities.

Shares of the first family-owned business to list in Qatar also slumped on Monday as they began trading.

Qatari conglomerate Investment Holding Group tumbled 13pc from its initial public offer price to 8.70 riyals. Trading volume was about 3.3m shares, roughly one-third of the total volume in Doha on Monday. (Reuters)

KUWAIT edged up 0.2pc to 6,859 points.

BAHRAIN decreased 0.3pc to 1,319 points.

China bans N Koreaniron, seafood imports

Industrial output slows sharply in July: China

Beijing

China will halt iron, iron ore and seafood imports from North Korea starting yesterday,

following through on new UN sanctions after US pressure for Beijing to strongarm Pyongyang over its ally’s nuclear programme.

The decision was announced on Monday after days of increasingly bellicose rhetoric between US President Donald Trump and Kim Jong-Un’s regime, which has raised international alarm about where the crisis is headed.

Beijing had pledged to fully enforce the latest sanctions after the United States accused China of not doing enough to rein in its neighbour, which relies heavily on the Asian giant for its economic survival.

The Chinese commerce ministry said on its website that all imports of coal, iron, iron ore and seafood will be “completely prohibited” from Tuesday. Beijing had already announced a suspension of coal imports in February.

Beijing

China’s industrial output, a key engine of growth, slowed sharply in July as government

efforts to rein in debt weighed on demand and economic activity, official data showed yesterday.

The figures come as the authorities have sought to tighten regulations to tame debt as well as reduce excess capacity left over from massive government-backed infrastructure spending at the height of the global financial crisis.

Output by Chinese factories and workshops grew by a lower-than-expected 6.4 percent compared to the same month last year, the national statistics bureau said.

Economists surveyed by Bloomberg News had expected growth of 7.1 percent for July after industrial production expanded by 7.6 percent in June.

Retail sales, meanwhile, slowed slightly to 10.4 percent last month, compared to 11 percent in June, while fixed asset investment posted 8.3 percent growth in the January-July period -- both slightly below expectations.

Congratulations to all Indians on the occasion

of Independence day.

In his maiden address to the nation on the eve of Independence Day, newly elected President Ram Nath Kovind yesterday stressed on the importance of education and technology among masses. Lauding major decisions of the government including demonetisation and implementation of GST, Kovind said the world today is looking at India with admiration. Here are the highlights of his speech:

Dear Fellow Citizens engaged in the task of nation building…

My greetings to you as we complete 70 years of our Independence.

On August 15, 1947, we became a free nation. Sovereignty and the responsibility for our destiny moved from the British crown to the people of India. Some have called this process a “transfer of power”.

It was much more than that. It was the culmination of a dream for our country – a dream seen by our forefathers and freedom fighters. We were free to imagine and build our nation anew.

From the earliest days of our freedom struggle, we were blessed with a galaxy of revolutionary leaders who guided our country. They spoke of not just political freedom. Mahatma Gandhi emphasised the moral character of India and of Indian society. The principles that Gandhiji spoke about are relevant even today.

We need to draw inspiration from such brave freedom fighters, many of whom sacrificed even their lives for the country. We need to

invoke the same spirit today in the task of nation building.

The stress on the moral basis of policy and action, belief in unity and discipline, faith in a synthesis of heritage and science, and promotion of the rule of law and of education – all of it was located in a partnership between citizen and government.

That is how our nation has been built – by a partnership between citizen and government, between individual and society, between a family and the wider community.

This spirit of empathy and of social service

and volunteerism is very much alive in India. There are so many people and organisations that work quietly and diligently for the poor and the disadvantaged.

They could be running schools for street children, caring for stray animals and birds, and providing water to hard-to-reach tribal communities in remote areas. Or cleaning rivers and public places. They are nation builders in action, and we need to draw inspiration from them.

We should also work with unity and purpose to ensure that the benefits of government policies reach all sections of society. For this, the partnership between citizens and government remains essential.

In the year 2022, our country will complete 75 years of Independence. It is our national resolve to attain certain desired milestones for a New India by then.

When we speak of a New India, what do we mean? There are some obvious parameters – like a house for every family, power on demand, better roads and telecom, a modern railway network, rapid and sustained growth.

And yet there is more. New India must include that integral humanist component that is in our DNA, and which has defined our country and our civilisation. New India must be a society rushing towards the future, but also a compassionate society.

There is also need to adopt technology. We must use technology to empower our people and achieve the goal of poverty elimination in a single generation. Poverty and New India are simply not compatible.

Today, the world is looking at India with admiration. Our country is seen as a responsible global citizen, a growing economy, and a solution provider to various international challenges – such as climate change, disasters, conflicts, humanitarian crises, radicalism and terrorism.

The Tokyo Olympics of 2020 offer another opportunity for us to raise our standing in the world’s eyes. Over the coming three years, we should absorb ourselves in this national mission. Government agencies, sports bodies and business enterprises need to join hands to identify and support our talented sportspersons and provide them world-class training facilities – so that they can be even more successful in Tokyo.

The single most critical factor for building our nation is to equip our coming generation. We need to ensure that not one child is left behind. As such I would urge you, as fellow nation builders, to help educate less-privileged children in our society. Help teach a child other than your own. Enrol and pay the school fees or buy the books of at least one child other than your own. Just one!

Our India is at the door of great achievements. In a few years, we will become a fully literate society. We must set the bar higher, and aim to become a fully educated society.

We are all stake-holders in this mission. If we achieve it, our country will change before our eyes. And we will become agents of this defining change.

Ram Nath KovindPresident of India

India at the door of great achievements

On the occasion of the Independence Day of India, I extend my warm

greetings and best wishes to all Indian nationals and friends of India in the kingdom of Bahrain.

On August 15, 1947, India

became a free nation. Five years from now, in August 2022, India will be commemorating 75 years as an Independent nation. This five year period gives us a unique opportunity to ignite the transformation that will create a New India by 2022. It is our national resolve to build a New India that we all

can cherish. As India celebrates 70 years

of freedom, it is at the threshold of significant achievements. India has already entered the golden era of space technology. Digital India initiative aims to transform India into a digital economy and promises to transform the country into a digitally empowered society and a knowledge economy with intellectual capital. The flagship programmes initiated by the Government of India such as Make in India, Skill India and Smart Cities are expected to stimulate growth and to realize the full potential of the Indian economy.

The recently introduced Goods and Services Tax will bring out a transformational shift to One Country, One Market, One Tax and is expected to provide a significant boost to investment and growth of the economy. ‘Make in India’ has ushered in multiple reforms in the sphere of Foreign Direct Investment (FDI), thus rendering positivity

to the investment climate in India. The country has witnessed a substantial increase in FDI inflow with USD 161 Billion FDI received between April 2014 and March 2017. In less than 3 years, Make in India has become a highly visible and credible brand, opening new doors for investment. These developments offer great potential for enhanced engagement between India and Bahrain.

India and Bahrain enjoy historic ties. The vision and directions of the leadership of the two countries have

nurtured this relationship. In recent years, this relationship has grown in all spheres: political, economic and cultural. India-Bahrain relations are currently poised at a significant juncture that has several mutual synergies and complementarities.

The presence of a large Indian community in Bahrain constitutes an important link between our countries. The Indian community has distinguished itself as a peaceful and hard working group and has contributed over the years to growth and

prosperity of Bahrain. Bahrain has always been an excellent host.

On this important milestone in the history of India, I once again extend my warm greetings to all Indian nationals and friends of India in the Kingdom of Bahrain and thank them for their consistent contribution to the growth and development of both our countries as well as to the expansion of our deep-rooted, historic relationship.

Happy Independence day

India, which accounted for 23 per cent of World GDP in the 18th century, became impoverished during nearly two centuries of British colonial rule. But it has come

a long way since independence in 1947 to become a major emerging economy and World’s largest democracy. As the nation celebrates its 70th year of independence, India can be proud of its achievements, thanks to its visionary leaders.

The Narendra Modi government in particular has given a new thrust to the socio-economic development during the last three years to take the country to the next and higher level of development to aspirational India, where 65 per cent of 1.25 billion people are less than 35 years of age. It is not a mean achievement that India’s GDP has grown from a mere Rs 94 billion in 1950 to over Rs 130 trillion now.

In the Initial years India was on a consolidation mode and hence the emphasis was on development of basic and heavy industries to become self-reliant

and ensure that there were no starvation deaths in the country as in the case of Bengal famine of 1942. The economy was in shambles at the time of independence, particularly after the World War two. It is the vision of our political leaders at that time made the country adopt mixed economic pattern with a socialistic bend to uplift the vast poor in the country.

India did not adopt extreme socialism like China or the erstwhile Soviet Union or extreme Capitalism. Several decades later the World had seen collapse of extreme socialism as witnessed in the Soviet Union and collapse of unbridled market economy in United States during the global financial crisis of 2008. India has been able to weather the storm during global economic crisis because of its mixed economic approach. The transition was smooth when India shifted gears from socialistic pattern of economy to open market economy in 1991. It also came unscathed during the East Asian currency crisis of 1990s and global financial crisis of 2008.

Stage set for faster Economic Development

Page 16: Medical checks must for expats - DT News

(continued from page 15)From a food grain importing

country, India has become food grain exporting country and in recent years it even overtook Thailand to become World’s largest exporter of Rice. Today India is among World’s top producer in milk, sugar, fruits, vegetables apart from food grains. India is also not far behind in production of cash crops like, rubber, cotton, tea, coffee and so on. However, despite record increase in agricultural yield, the farmers in the country are facing some tough time because of debt burden, crop failures and not getting remunerative prices for farm produce. Some years there are gluts and some years there are shortages. Successive governments have come up with several steps to deal with the farmers’ distress. A lot has been done, but much more is still to be done and rightly Modi government has embarked upon a plan to double the farm per capita income by 2022 so that rural India too can prosper. The attempt of the government during the last three years is therefore to make Indian agriculture smart. Just as the government has embarked upon Smart City project, the agriculture too is being made smart through programmes like Jan Dhan Yojana and Digital India, which will have far-

reaching impact on improving credit and price discovery of farm produce, besides timely help and education with regard to farm techniques, weather forecast, selection of crops, pesticides, quality seeds, fertilizers etc. A simple step like adding neem to fertilizers had ensured that there is adequate availability of fertilizers to farmers by checking diversion of urea for industrial purposes.

Apart from bringing about financial inclusion, Skill India, Digital India, Swatchh Bharat and Make in India programme of Prime Minister Modi will push the country forward to bring about socio- economic development in better and clean

environment. The Government’s clean energy programme to install 1.75 Gw of solar and wind energy will help in pushing towards ecological balance apart from dispersed development.

To ensure the economy kick-started at a time when global economy is tottering, the government has taken number of steps to step up public expenditure and infrastructure spending. This has ensured that India remained among the top as far as economic growth is concerned and, therefore, India remains a bright spot in otherwise a gloomy world economy. This is evident from the fact that the foreign direct investment is on the rise and

has surged towards a record $60 billion this year. This is no mean achievement as global investors see opportunity here when it is shrinking elsewhere in the World including China and advanced countries.

The rural roads programme, the cold storage development programme, allowing 100 per cent FDI in food processing, the development of ports and airports, the highway programme, the Sagarmala project to encourage coastal

shipping, the inland waterways project, will step up job creation and economic development. Apart from development of 100 smart cities, which will step up urban development, the government has taken up metro rail projects in several cities including metros to improve urban transportation facilities.

With strong macro-economic fundamentals including low fiscal deficit and low and stable inflation and several structural reforms

including the game-changing Goods and Services Tax, the economy can only move forward to a high growth path. There might have been some short-term blips because of demonetization and some teething trouble because of GST rollout but the structural reforms taken by Modi government will have a far-reaching impact on putting the economy on higher pedestal. This will also ensure that India moved away from corruption-ridden economy to a corruption-free economy. The digitization efforts will improve ease of doing business further resulting in more economic activity and much needed job creation. These unprecedented reforms have set the platform for India to leapfrog in development.

If you’re in a debate, don’t back down. The major advantage you have over your opponents is your keen power of observation. It enables you to pick up on the energy around you. You’ll be able to keep explosive issues from getting out of hand. Be aggressive if you feel it’s needed to control the situation.

Once you start talking about a certain topic, it might be hard to stop, especially if the topic is you or one of your activities. A question about one aspect of your life may come up and you could have a sudden desire to tell your whole life story. Other people are going to want to voice their opinions, too, so take a breath and give them a chance.

Your mental activity is more pronounced than usual. It may be difficult to stop the barrage of thoughts streaming through your head. You may be able to accomplish a lot, but you might drive yourself crazy with the internal chatter that doesn’t give you the opportunity to mentally sit still. Your thinking will be clearer if you take time to slow down and meditate.Ideas are intriguing today. You might feel like a kid in a candy store seeing new treats for the first time. New concepts are pulling you in, and you love every minute of it. Run with it. Your mind is exploring new realms, and you shouldn’t try to hold it back. Collect the data now and sort through it later. This is a time for adventure.

You pick up information quickly. Someone only needs to explain something to you once for you to grasp the concept. Your questions are concise. No one can accuse you of not paying attention to his or her words or actions. At the same time, you may be too sensitive to the information around you. An overload of stimuli could eventually overwhelm you.

You have independent views about everything. People would be wrong to try to box you into thinking a certain way. Don’t let others convince you to accept something you’re sceptical of. You know what you believe so don’t be afraid to express it even if they go against the grain. Independence is important to you.

If you know you’ve wronged another, admit it immediately. People are often quick to point out when others make mistakes, but it’s the rare individual who points out their own mistakes. Demonstrate that you’re strong and honourable enough to say when you’ve done wrong. Integrity will get you far in life, whereas deception and retreating from difficult situations will not.You may feel a great urge to dive headfirst into a project. Perhaps there’s a plot of ground that you want to turn into a garden. Dig your hands into the soil. Maybe there’s a craft or art form that you can’t wait to learn about and develop. Be careful that you don’t start too many different projects and leave them all unfinished.

You’re likely to be even quicker on the uptake than usual. Conversation will be brisk and lively. You may feel like the conductor of a symphony. You’re able to understand and follow all the different harmonies and melody lines while keeping your own steady beat running through your head. The music you make with others will be magical.

The connection between your thoughts and words is strong today, and communication with others goes especially well. If there’s something important to be said, you won’t hesitate to say it, unlike your usual tendency to refrain from speaking to the person who really needs to hear you the most. You’re doing people a favour by letting them share your incredible wisdom.Your words will flow smoothly today, and you certainly won’t lack things to say. Conversations about higher learning and greater spirituality are likely. You may be more aggressive when it comes to getting your opinion across, but that’s good. It’s important that you make your position known so others know where you stand.

If someone says something you disagree with or disapprove of, speak up. The person might assume you agree unless you say something. Your words can be forceful without being offensive, your approach assertive and not argumentative. State the facts as you see them. Don’t act in a condescending way toward others.

Moscow

Russia’s FSB security service said yesterday

that it had captured a gang planning major attacks on Moscow transport networks and shopping centres, directed by members of the Islamic State jihadist group from Syria.

Security officers detained members of the group outside Moscow as they plotted “a series of terrorist attacks in crowded public places including on public transport and in major shopping centres in Moscow

using suicide bombers and powerful explosive devices,” the FSB said.

It said it had determined that the attacks were being organised by IS warlords and emissaries who are in Syria, which it identified as T.M. Nazarov and A.M. Shirindzhonov.

Media outlets in Tajikistan reported this month that a man named Todzhiddin Nazarov, also known as Abu Osama Noraka, had appeared in IS video statements from Syria posted on pro-jihadist sites.

Beijing

China warned yesterday that nobody would win

in a “trade war” with the United States as President Donald Trump prepared to launch an investigation into Chinese intellectual property practices.

Trump was due to sign a memorandum directing US Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer to determine whether any Chinese laws, policies or practices

discriminate against or harm American innovators and technology companies. The investigation could lead to sanctions against Beijing.

Asked about the US move, foreign ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying said any member of the World Trade Organisation must respect WTO rules.

“Fighting a trade war has no future. There will be no winner and everybody will lose,” Hua said.

“We (Russia) actively sup-port the emerging trend to step up the process of political resolution, towards a full restoration of statehood in (Libya). We support your intent on achieving some progress”

Freetown

At least 312 people were killed and more than

2,000 left homeless yesterday when heavy flooding hit Sierra Leone’s capital of Freetown, leaving excavators to pull bodies from rubble and overwhelming the city’s morgues.

Reporters saw several homes submerged in Regent village, a hilltop community, and corpses floating in the water in the Lumley West area of the city, as the government held an emergency meeting to plan its response to one of the worst natural disasters ever to hit the city.

Red Cross spokesman Patrick Massaquoi said the death toll was 312 but could rise further as his team continued to survey disaster areas in Freetown and tally the number of dead.

Sierra Leone is one of the poorest countries in the world, according to UN indicators.

“I counted over 300 bodies and more are coming,” Mohamed Sinneh, a morgue technician at Freetown’s Connaught Hospital, told AFP, having earlier described an “overwhelming number of dead” at the facility leaving

no space to lay out every body.

Many more of the dead were taken to private morgues, Sinneh said.

Sierra Leone’s military, police and Red Cross volunteers were meanwhile deployed in an all out effort to locate and rescue citizens trapped in their homes or under rubble.

Images showed ferocious, churning dark-orange mud coursing down a steep street in the capital, while videos posted by local residents showed people waist- or chest-deep in water trying to cross the road. (AFP)

London

Britain’s much-loved Big Ben will fall silent for

four years from next week as conservation work is carried out on the famous 19th century bell in a clock tower next to the Houses of Parliament.

“Big Ben falling silent is a significant milestone in this crucial conservation project,” Steve Jaggs, whose official title is “Keeper of the Great Clock”, said in a parliament statement yesterday.

“This essential programme of works will safeguard the clock on a long term basis, as well as protecting and preserving its home -- the Elizabeth Tower,” he said.

It will be the longest period that Big Ben, whose bongs

are familiar to many people around the world because of their use in BBC radio and television broadcasts, has been silent in its 157-year history.

The Great Bell, popularly called Big Ben, weighs 13.7

tonnes and strikes every hour to the note of E. Four smaller bells also chime every 15 minutes.

The last bong before the refurbishment will be at 12 pm (1100 GMT) on August 21, the statement said.

A suspected white supremacist’s attack on

a crowd of protesters using his car as a battering ram fits the definition of domestic terrorism, US Attorney General Jeff Sessions said yesterday.

A woman was killed and 19 people were injured when the car ploughed into a crowd of people Saturday in Charlottesville, Virginia after a violent rally by neo-Nazis and white supremacists protesting the removal of a Confederate statue.

The vehicle attack “does meet the definition of domestic terrorism in our statute,” Sessions said in an

interview on ABC.“We are pursuing it in

the Department of Justice in every way that we can make a case.”

“You can be sure we will charge and advance the investigation towards the most serious charges that can be brought because this is unequivocally an unacceptable, evil attack,” he told ABC.

The FBI and federal prosecutors have opened a civil rights investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident, which took place soon after police dispersed a white nationalist rally that erupted into violent clashes with counter-protesters.

Zverev shocks Federer

Montreal

Alexander Zverev shocked second seed Roger Federer

in straight sets in the Montreal Masters final to win his fifth title of the season and announce himself as an emerging star for the US Open.

The 20-year-old German used his booming serve to overpower Federer 6-3, 6-4 Sunday as the Swiss superstar never got a chance to get into the match.

“I tried to be aggressive as I can,” said Zverev. “If Roger starts being aggressive with his forehand and backhand then it is not going to be an easy day for me.”

Zverev avenged a 6-1, 6-3 loss to Federer in the Halle final in June -- his only loss in a final this season.

He is now tied with Federer for the most titles this season at five.

“It’s a wonderful achievement for him,” Federer said of Zverev. “I wish him the best for the coming months and hope he can finish the season very strong.

“I’m just really happy for him, to see that he’s taking everything not just to the next level, but the two next levels.”

Zverev blasted six aces and won 80 percent of first serve points as he needed just

68 minutes to dominate the 19-time Grand Slam winner and reigning Wimbledon and Australian Open champion.

Zverev hammered away at the 36-year-old Federer with excellent court coverage keeping him off balance throughout the 30 minute opening set. He closed out the set with serve to the backhand that an out of sorts Federer dumped into the ground.

Federer, who was broken three times, looked just as frustrated to open the second set, hitting backhands long and freezing in his tracks as aces whizzed by.

Zverev capped his victory

on the first match point when Federer hit a forehand long.

Federer suffered just his third loss of a season and had his longest win match streak in five years snapped at 16.

Federer, who dropped to 5-1 in finals in 2017, is undergoing a resurgence this season after it

appeared to many he might be slowing down as he transitions through his mid-30s.

But he entered the Montreal event on short notice and has taken more time off this year than usual. He skipped the clay-court season from April to mid-June. (AFP)

Ronaldo handed five-match banMadrid

Cristiano Ronaldo was hit with a five-match ban by the Spanish

football federation (RFEF) yesterday for pushing the referee after being sent-off in Real Madrid’s 3-1 Spanish Super Cup, first leg win over Barcelona.

The World Player of the Year received an automatic one-match ban for his dismissal on Sunday and an extra four games for his reaction towards referee Ricardo de Burgos Bengoetxea.

Ronaldo was also fined 3,805 euros ($4,500) and has 10 days to appeal the ban.

Should any appeal fail, Ronaldo will miss Wednesday’s Super Cup, second

leg and Madrid’s first four La Liga games of the season against Deportivo la Coruna, Valencia, Levante and Real Sociedad.

Madrid had already signalled their intent to appeal Ronaldo’s second yellow card shown for diving eight minutes from time when he went down inside the area under pressure from Samuel Umtiti.

“Ronaldo’s sending-off annoys me because even if it is not a penalty, the card is harsh,” said Madrid boss Zinedine Zidane after the game.

“We will see if we can do something so that he is available on Wednesday.”

Ronaldo was only on the field for

24 minutes as he was introduced as a second-half substitute and fired into the top corner 10 minutes from time to give Madrid a 2-1 lead.

He received his first yellow card for removing his shirt in celebration before being shown the 10th red card of his career two minutes later.

“Once shown the red card, said player (Ronaldo) pushed me lightly as a sign of his disapproval,” de Burgos Bengoetxea wrote in his referee’s report.

According to the RFEF’s rules, such offences are met with a suspension of anything between four and 12 games, but previous cases also resulted in four-game bans. (AFP)

Pallekele, Sri Lanka

India’s captain Virat Kohli heaped praise on Hardik

Pandya for his maiden century in the third Test after the visitors inflicted a crushing series defeat on Sri Lanka yesterday.

Pandya’s 96-ball 108 paved the way for victory by an innings and 171 runs inside three days, India’s first clean sweep of an overseas three-Test series.

Off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin and paceman Mohammed Shami shared seven wickets as the hosts were bowled out for 181 in their follow-on in Pallekele Monday.

But it was 23-year-old Pandya, batting in just his third Test after debuting in Galle, who stole the show with the century that had lifted India to an unassailable 487.

Sri Lanka offered just 135 in reply in their first innings against the world’s top Test side.

“You know, a guy who can get a fifty and a hundred in his first three games batting at number eight has to have

something special in him,” Kohli told reporters after the match.

“He brings in great balance to the team, he’s a gun fielder and gives you those crucial breakthroughs... we absolutely have 120 per cent faith in him.”

Rookie spinner Kuldeep Yadav also made his mark

with four wickets in Sri Lanka’s first innings as the islanders conceded a 352-run first innings lead.

Playing in just his second Test, the 22-year-old bamboozled the hosts with his left-arm wrist spin, returning overall match figures of 5-96.

Ashwin kept up the pressure on the beleaguered

hosts with four wickets on the third day, including top-scorer Niroshan Dickwella for 41.

“We are a young side. We look forward to playing Test cricket with the same kind of excitement. That’s the only way you can be ruthless... we like to be proactive rather than reactive,” said Kohli.

“We have age on our side. We have an opportunity to play together for five-six years with this whole bunch and this really excites us.”

Sri Lankan skipper Dinesh Chandimal, who made 36, put up some resistance during his 65-run fifth-wicket stand with Angelo Mathews.

But Kuldeep took Chandimal’s wicket just after lunch, with Ashwin claiming Mathews lbw for 35 not long after.

Shami, who took three wickets, combined with Ashwin to mop up the tail as Sri Lanka suffered their second successive innings defeat after a drubbing in Colombo. (AFP)

Call me Mohamed: Farah to change brand for road racingLondon

British athletics great Mo Farah wants to be known as ‘Mohamed’

now that he is switching his focus to road racing, he has announced.

“My road name is Mohamed,” he said. “I just feel like Mo is done. I need to forget about what I’ve achieved and what I’ve done (on the track).”

Farah, 34, made the announcement after bringing the curtain down on his glittering track career by winning 10,000 metres gold and 5,000 metres silver at the World Championships in London.

Somalia-born Farah has won four Olympic titles and six world titles, but he bowed out under something of a cloud due to doping allegations against his American coach Alberto Salazar.

He hit out at the media during an emotional press conference on Sunday, accusing them of trying to

“destroy” his achievements.“You can write what you like,”

Farah said. “The fact is I’ve achieved what I have from hard work and dedication, putting my balls on the line, year after year, and delivering for my country.

“It’s like a broken record, repeating myself. If I’ve crossed the line, if Alberto’s crossed the line, why bring it up year after year, making it into headlines? “I’ve achieved what I have achieved. You’re trying to destroy it.” (AFP)

Mixed emotions as Bolt bows outLondon

Jamaican Usain Bolt said Sunday he was sad but also excited to bow out

of athletics, adding that his disappointing world campaign in London would not change his career achievements.

Bolt brought down the curtain on his glittering career in dramatic fashion when he pulled up with a hamstring cramp halfway through his anchor leg in the 4x100m relay.

That meant his final competitive race finished without a medal, Bolt having sealed a bronze in the individual 100m behind American duo Justin Gatlin, who has served two doping bans, and Christian Coleman.

“It’s been a rough couple of days,” admitted the 30-year-old.

“I always tried my best 100 percent all the

time and put on a good show.“I’m sad to be walking away now.“I don’t think one championships is

going to change what I’ve done in this sport.”

Often compared to American boxing great Muhammad Ali by

IAAF president Sebastian Coe for not only his sporting

prowess but also the charisma and larger-than-life personality he brought off-track, Bolt made the same link in a final press conference Sunday.

“I remember after losing the 100m, someone said to me: ‘Usain, don’t

worry, Muhammad Ali lost his last fight also so

don’t be stressed about it’.“I’ve proven myself year in,

year out,” said the Jamaican, world record holder in the 100 and 200m, winner of eight Olympic golds and 14 world medals since making his debut in Helsinki in 2005 when he finished eighth and last in the 200m final. (AFP)
