TELEPHONEResidents can make or receive telephone calls as they wish. A cordless phone is available and can be taken to the resident at any time. Pay phones are available on each unit. Private phone lines can be connected in residents’ rooms at an additional cost.

CULTURAL NEEDSWe are sensitive to your cultural needs and preferences, and there are a number of options available to ensure we meet these needs.

An Ethnic Services Officer is available to provide assistance and support and this service can be requested from the manager of the unit. A free interpreter service is available 24 hours a day.

SMOKINGBarwon Health is a smoke-free environment. Smoking is not allowed within the property. Residents of the McKellar Centre and Alan David Lodge can smoke on the premises in designated areas. If you are a smoker, please discuss this with the manager of your unit.

ALCOHOLAlcohol may be consumed in moderation, provided it has been approved by your GP. There is an alcohol policy in place, please refer to the Resident Information booklet for more details.

SPIRITUAL NEEDSResidents are encouraged to remain active in meeting their spiritual needs and staff work with residents to help address these needs. Services are held regularly and conducted by a roster of local clergy.

ACTIVITIESThe Residential Aged Care Service has a comprehensive activities program which you will hear more about upon admission. Families are invited to participate in activities and special events.

PERSONAL EFFECTSWe encourage a home-like environment in residents’ rooms. Pictures and photos are welcome, as well as other personal items. Please label these clearly but discretely with your name.

Whilst all care is taken with personal items, such as clothing, jewellery and other valuables, Barwon Health cannot accept responsibility for loss or theft.

A television is provided for residents to view in each of the lodges’ lounge rooms. Residents wishing to bring in their own television are asked to discuss their request with the manager of the unit on admission. Out of courtesy to other residents, we ask residents to wear headphones after 8pm if they are in a shared room.

All electrical items brought into our facility must be authorised by the manager of the unit and tested and tagged by the Barwon Health electrical contractor before being used.

VISITING HOURSVisitors are welcome at all times.

TOILETRIESPersonal toiletry items such as soap and toothpaste are provided to all residents, however excludes specialty toiletries.

HAIRDRESSINGAll residents have access to an onsite hairdressing service or alternatively you can use a hairdresser of your choice. Please discuss this with staff on admission.

CLOTHINGAll personal clothing is provided by the resident/family. Please ensure staff are made aware if any clothing requires labelling prior to it going into general laundry. Machine washable clothing is encouraged. The McKellar Centre has a Smart Moves policy in relation to lifting of residents and to ensure this policy is adhered to, residents and families are asked to discuss the appropriateness of clothing for the comfort of residents. This includes shoes and other footwear. If any clothing requires repair, the family will need to arrange this.

LAUNDRYClothing is laundered on site at the McKellar Centre. If any special laundering is required, family are encouraged to take it home for laundering. Alternatively, dry cleaning can be arranged at a cost.

PETSEach of our lodges has resident pets. Relatives and friends wishing to bring a pet into the facility to visit must obtain permission from the Manager. It is important that pets are appropriately restrained and disease-free.

OUTINGSDay outings are organised for residents on a voluntary basis. Residents are encouraged to remain in contact with the community where possible and outings with family and friends remain important.

COMMENTS/COMPLAINTSWe continually strive to provide quality care. Please feel free to approach the manager of your unit personally or by phone. Feedback forms are provided for your use. A complete guide to the complaints and suggestion process is included in the Residential Information booklet.

NURSING CARE/PERSONAL CARE WORKERSRegistered and enrolled nurses manage the nursing care for all residents withz 24 hour nursing support available in all sites. Soon after admission, the staff will identify your care needs. You may wish for your family to be involved in this discussion. Once your care needs have been identified, a care plan will then be developed and updated as needed.
