Dear Woodland Families, The week prior to winter break is always magical in schools. The excitement that comes with students' anticipation of the holidays, winter vacation and classroom celebrations always seems to build cheer. This year the season of giving has been filled with many opportunities for students to share their tal-ents, energy and kindness with others. As a staff we'd like to thank you for your generosity and the support you continually show to our Woodland community. Over the past few weeks our students have been able to share the gift of mu-sic with their classmates and families at our 6th grade vocal, instrumental and mixed-grade choir concert. In the spirit of giving, families enjoyed hot chocolate and additional tunes from members of our band in the commons following the con-cert. The opportunity to bring families together to connect and share in conversation was sponsored by our Woodland Intermediate Band Council and the proceeds from the hot chocolate sale are used to support the group’s projects to help others. Our Student Council members have also been busy bell ringing at local businesses over the past few weeks as they look to give the gift of time in the spirit of helping others and making a difference in our community. We’ve had many other opportunities for students to share their talents and gifts with others throughout the past few weeks as well. We know, however, that one of the greatest gifts we can share is the opportunity to spend time with those we care most about. I hope this holiday season and upcoming break is filled with joy and an opportunity to connect with friends and family. Happy Holidays, Mr. Dave Lamers

The Box Top competition will be starting after the holidays so keep saving those box tops! More information will be coming soon! Not only do the box tops earn money for the school, also the class bring-ing in the most box tops will win a prize! You can help make the counting easier by cutting them out on the dotted lines (the box top company is very strict about this) and put them in groups of 50 into Ziploc bags. Also, expired box tops are not eligible. Thank you!

5th Grade Computer

Applications

Students are

currently wrapping up their Online

Communication unit, and will be beginning a

new unit this year called Computer

Science. Fifth graders will be using the

code.org curriculum called CS Fundamentals

to learn basic coding strategies and concepts.

In addition to

completing this new unit, all intermediate

students will also be participating in a world-

wide coding event called the Hour of Code. In our

building, this event will take place the week of

December 17th. Keep an eye out for more info

to come on this exciting celebration of Computer

Science! Mrs. Berndt (ext. 2625)

World Studies

6th Grade World Studies

At the start of second quarter, sixth graders said “Au revoir” to our French unit, and “Bienvenidos” to our final unit of World Studies… Spanish! Students are discovering how much fun the Spanish language and culture are as we learn greetings, numbers 1-31 and calendar vocabulary. We’ve also spent a good amount of time learning about Mexico. Students are looking forward to our upcoming research project, which is to create a Google Site about a Spanish-speaking country. Be sure to ask them to share it with you! They are excited to be publishing their work to the internet for others to view!

As always, we love having guest speakers come in to visit our classes. If you or someone you know has a connection to the Spanish language or culture and is interested in coming in, please let us know. ¡Feliz Año Nuevo!

Choir Information:

We celebrated this concert with a pizza party and will begin our rehearsals for the KASD Choral Festival in January, boys on the 17th, girls on the 22nd. We will combine on the 27th and 29th, and also on February 5th and 7th. If there are any additional students interested in joining choir, those are required rehearsals, allowing for ample time to learn the concert music. Please let Mrs. Been know if your child would like to join and make arrangements to have her/him at those rehearsals. Attire for that performance will be black bottoms (pants or skirt with black tights/leggings), black shoes, and a white top (tie is optional).

Healthy Living 5

th Grade

We are just finishing our nutrition unit.

I’d love to think this is resulting in positive

changes in your child’s eating behaviors

especially an increase in consumption of

fruits and vegetables. I’ve told the students

that even though our nutrition unit has

ended, our goals of choosing what we eat

based on the “Choose My Plate” criteria will

never end! :) Thanks for your support at

home with their choices.

Before leaving on break will be discussing

“Personal Health and Safety”. We will be

learning common injuries of 5th graders and

how important it is to be aware of our

surroundings to help prevent these injuries.

As the fifth graders are becoming more

independent, supervision is not always going

to be there if they are physically injured.

While prevention is the most important

factor in staying safe, students also need to

know what to do to help themselves and

others if an injury does occur. We will

learned about basic first aid during our

Personal Health and Safety unit. I strongly

encourage you to enroll your child in a

babysitting class to help give students more

knowledge and confidence when staying

home by themselves or with younger

children. Also in this unit will be a

presentation by Sexual Assault Crisis Center.

The discussion is mandated by the state, but

it is also a great opportunity to remind

students how to stay safe.

As always, if you have any questions or

concerns, please contact me.

6th Grade Art

The 6th grade students created an abstract sculpture made of plaster of Paris, which is similar to what famous sculptors used for their masterpieces like the statue of David by Michelangelo. Michelangelo (March 6, 1475 – February 18, 1564), was a very famous sculptor that carved masterpieces from chunks of plaster, and that is what the 6th grade students have done. Students learned how to mix, pour and carve the plaster. The students also used files called rasps that would grind the plaster down and make it easy for the students to shape the plaster. Once the students were finished they used different colored acrylic paint to finish off their piece. .When the students were all finished with their plaster project the students then made a name tag and used their chrome book to fill out their check off sheet (self- assessment) on our Google classroom. The plaster projects will be displayed in the hallways when they are finished. Our next project will be a still life drawing.

-The Elements of Art we have covered are: Color, Form, Line, Shape, Space, Texture and Value

MUSIC

Grade 5:

Preparations are well under way for

the January 15th concert! This concert

will be held at 6:30 in the evening and

will feature every member of the 5th grade

class singing songs about rivers, streams,

and other bodies of water! The students

have been working very hard at learning

to sing in 2-part harmony and have also

learned important information about

slavery and the Underground Railroad.

Every student is expected to be in

attendance. Please let Mrs. Been know if

there is a conflict that cannot be

accommodated. There will be a rehearsal

at 1:30, if there is a family member who is

unable to attend the evening performance,

they are welcome to come at that time.

Students should dress in nice clothes for

the evening concert, to make a good first

impression! Nice pants, shirts with no

logos or writing, skirts and dresses are

encouraged. Please wear low or no-

heeled dress shoes. Thanks!

Grade 6:

Our concert was a success, thanks to

the 6th grade students for your efforts!

Thank you, parents for your support! We

are moving back into reading music,

looking for dynamics, key signatures and

other important clues for how the music

should be performed. We will have a

brief unit of playing tone chimes to review

note names, in preparation for our next

round of piano keyboarding.

When to Keep Your Child Home

Children should be kept home from school when they don’t feel well. It is important to get the rest they need to

recover, and to prevent the spread of germs to other children and the staff. If you are unsure of when to keep your

child home, please contact the school nurse or your family medical provider.

The following symptoms may suggest a communicable disease. Children who have the following symptoms should

be kept home from school until a doctor has seen them, they no longer have symptoms indicating a communicable

disease or they have received treatment for at least 24 hours for certain diseases.

SORE THROAT

An oral temperature of 100.4 or higher indicates a fever. If your child has a temp of 100.4 or higher at school he/she will be sent home. Your child must be fever free for 24 hours without the use of a fever reducer (Tylenol or Ibuprofen product) before he/she returns to school.

If a fever is accompanied by a sore throat, stomach ache or head ache it may be strep throat. Strep throat is diagnosed by a throat culture obtained at a medical clinic. If your child is diagnosed with strep throat, your child must be on appropriate antibiotics for 24 hours and fever free for 24 hours without the use of a fever reducer (Tylenol or Ibuprofen product) before he/she returns to school.

If your child has an episode of vomiting and diarrhea at school, he/she will be sent home. Anyone with these symptoms should stay home until symptoms are absent for 24 hours.

A cough may be a sign of many different illnesses. If a cough is accompanied by a fever, sore throat, body aches or any other symptoms you should keep your child home. Any cough that lasts for more than several days should be discussed with a doctor.

Rashes and infected sores needed to be diagnosed by a medical provider. Many skin rashes such as impetigo, scabies, chicken pox, Fifth disease or Hand Foot and Mouth disease are very contagious. Students may return to school once the rash has been diagnosed and treated for 24 hours or cleared by a doctor. Open sores from illnesses such as chicken pox and impetigo may need to be covered at school with bandages for several days.

Symptoms that prevent the student from active participation is usual school activities OR student is requiring more care than school that can safely provide.

Substitute Teachers new to KASD are supported by helpful District

positions you are most interested in for your subbing career. KASD offers a competitive daily pay
