Dear Woodland Families,

It is hard to believe that there are only a few short weeks until the end of the 2016-2017 school year. As a staff we are focused on taking advantage of the learning experiences that remain, but also look to balance the closing days of the school year with an opportunity to connect and celebrate as a school com-munity.

We have a great deal to celebrate. We began the month of May by recognizing our Woodland team during staff and teacher appreciation week. Our families and PTO were incredibly gracious with their support. Thank you for partnering with us to serve our community and children. We are fortunate to work hand-in-hand with our students’ parents to reach our goal of all students meeting or ex-ceeding grade level expectations while engaging in a well-rounded learning ex-perience.

This month we also celebrate strong academic success throughout the school. Teachers and their teams have worked daily since the start of the year to deter-mine how to best meet our students’ needs and provide them with the highest quality learning experiences we can. Our staff engaged in ongoing problem solving around our learners’ needs using a continuous improvement framework to guide their thinking. The results of their work and our students’ efforts have been impressive.

This spring we also showcased our students’ talents in the arts at our concert and art show. Students were able to feature a number of musical selections and art creations that stretched their skills. Hard work, practice and ongoing support has led our students to grow as musicians and artists.

In addition to pursuing excellence in the classroom, our students have taken advantage of the diverse intramurals we provide as well. Our intramural offer-ings range from cross-country to coding and look to expand our students’ inter-ests as they discover what they enjoy most. Principal’s Message Cont.

In the coming weeks we have several formal celebrations taking place as well.

Unless Celebration

Friday, May 26 - Students will celebrate the power of making a differ-ence, helping others and giving back to their community at our school’s annual cancer prevention fundraiser held in the Woodland gym.

Talent Show

Friday, June 2 - We celebrate the many different talents of our students that extend beyond the classroom at our intermediate talent show held in the Commons.

End of Year Trips

Wednesday, June 7 - Grade 5 students celebrate the end of the year at Calumet Country Park.

Thursday, June 8 - Grade 6 students go roller-skating and a grade-level pizza party.

It has been a privilege to work with our students this year. They have grown so much over the past few months. I’m looking forward to the opportunity to work with the class of 2024 next year and wish the class of 2023 the very best as they prepare for JRG.

Have a safe and wonderful summer!

Sincerely, Dave Lamers, Principal

Picture & Paperwork Day

Mark your calendars! The picture and paperwork day for the 2017/2018 school year will be held on Monday, August 7th from 11 AM to 6 PM. Meet-the-Teacher day is scheduled for Wednesday, Au-gust 30th from 2:00 pm—4:00 pm for both Woodland Intermediate and Woodland Elementary.

As this school year comes to a close, students and parents thoughts turn to the summer and the upcoming school year. One thought students wonder about is their classroom assignments for the next year. We as staff members will continue our efforts to maximize the learning potential of each student by balancing stu-dent/teacher ratios, maintaining gender balance, grouping students heterogene-ously, and avoiding potential student conflicts as we assign students to classes. Parents will be notified of their child’s classroom assignment by the first week of August. We ask that you do not request a specific teacher. We thank you in ad-vance for your understanding and cooperation so that we can make classroom as-signments with the most current enrollment numbers possible before the start of the school year.

Sunscreen Application

Just a reminder that it is the district’s guidelines that we do not provide or allow students to share or use another person's sunscreen, lip balm, lotion, etc. due to the potential for allergic reaction to the active ingredients in these products. We en-courage parents to apply sunscreen, especially on field trip days, at home prior to sending their child to school. If sun-screen needs to be reapplied, each student should have their own. Thank you!

Please note that Woodland Intermediate students have a full day of school on Fri-

day, June 2nd even though Elementary students are released at noon.

Congratulations to each of you for being a positive role model at Woodland Intermediate School!

“Faces in the Crowd” for April are Alex Vander Loop nominated by Mr. Lamers, Hailey Stannard nominated by Mrs. Slinde, Kathryn Johnston nominated by Ms. Shimek, and Tae Ellisen nominated by Ms. Curtis.

With Warmer weather arriving we need to keep in mind proper dress code.

Woodland Clothing Guidelines

Tank tops with spaghetti straps are not allowed. Tank tops should have at least a one inch band over the shoulders.

No inappropriate pictures or language is allowed on clothing. This includes references to al-cohol, smoking and/or drugs.

In general, undergarments should not be seen.

In all situations, staff may decide an article of clothing is not appropriate, even if all guidelines are followed.

Students who are not dressed according to these guidelines may be asked to call home for appropriate wear. Thank you for your cooperation!

Intramural Update

The intramurals season is coming to an end, and what a successful season it was. The students had a variety of experiences and opportunities to participate in sports, clubs, and activities. The coaches hope that all the stu-dents had many memorable moments spending time with their friends, developing new friendships, and learning new skill sets.

We sure wish the sixth graders well in their new adventures at JRG, and we know most of them will continue their participation in school functions. We can’t wait for the fifth graders to continue their excitement for intramurals as they head into the sixth grade. Lastly, thank you to all the parents for encouraging your children to join our intramu-rals program!

You Can Be the Change Video

One person can change the future of seven billion.

In the fall of 2011, world population surpassed 7 billion and as a citizen of the earth, it’s important to understand how we reached this milestone, analyze the impact of our choices, and realize that our decisions can and will impact the future.

Middle and high school students are invited to enter a video in a contest that shows how human population growth exacerbates many of the innumerable challenges facing our society today.

The contest first ran during the 2010-2011 school year as a “teachable moment” around world population reaching 7 billion. 619 videos were received from 36 U.S. states and four countries abroad in that first year.

Now in its 6th year, nearly 8,000 student-made videos on the impacts of population have been created as a direct result of the contest. Thousands of students are now more aware of the vast connections between population and so many of today’s pressing global challenges.

This year, videos were submitted from 45 countries and 48 US states and territories. Among them were 5 entries from 6th graders at Mapleview and Woodland Intermediate schools.

Examples Worth Watching: https://youtu.be/io_l9fk0v18: This video was produced by Isabella Pahl and Allison Stumpf, Wood-

land. They programmed the entire animation with the programming language Scratch.

Nina Tremble, Shelby Dix,Trey Vanevenhoven, Allison Weiher, Ben Schmidt and Marley Pozniak, Mapleview, used the wevideo software to create their video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vxw_wkFHBao

You Can be the Change was chosen as the second best in the world! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nMMRiuXYw50

Sixth graders Claire Knutsen, Julia Loritz, and Tae Ellison are classmates at Woodland Intermediate School in Ap-pleton, Wisconsin. They entered the contest after their teacher, Ms. Ulli Balistreri, told her class about it. Tae is very interested in science and environmental issues, so she took the lead on research. While they were studying the issue, the girls were inspired by a realization.

Page 9: mediate School - Amazon Web Services€¦ · Intermediate Culvers Night -May 22nd Woodland School Summer Office Hours The Woodland School office will be open throughout the summer

They tell us, “People across the globe do not have equal impacts on the environment. Here in Amer-ica, just one person can make a difference if they change their behavior.”

Claire was inspired to create an animated video when she saw her older brother using a similar technique for a class project. Ultimately, they ended up creating 644 slides, combining real photos with clip art and drawings to produce a stop motion style video. The girls agreed that the most chal-lenging aspect of the production process was compromising over all of the ideas that they had. All three girls have a diverse array of interests. Claire, the youngest of three siblings, participates in competitive dance. Julia spoke fondly of her family’s cottage up north where she spends her sum-mers swimming, inner tubing, and water skiing. Tae was described as a hilarious and amazing friend who also happens to be a talented poet.
