A MESSAGE FROM THE MAYOR

Culture Days is a collaborative, national volunteer movement dedicated to raising the awareness, accessibility, participation and engagement of Canadians in the arts and cultural life of their communities. From September 30 to October 2, 2011, Culture Days Mississauga will feature free, hands-on, interactive activities that invite the public to discover the world of artists, creators, historians, architects, curators and designers at work in our city.

Our arts community is growing and we are happy to present free performances and artistic exhibits across the city all weekend long. Discover local talent at Take 2, a grand showcase on Mississauga Celebration Square featuring more than 25 musical groups and artists. And be sure to check out the 4th annual Mississauga Book Fest, with 20 special celebration events at the Central Library.

This year, Doors Open Mississauga is a part of Culture Days. Featuring more than 35 sites that will open their doors for tours and activities on October 1, Doors Open allows the explorer in all of us to journey though heritage sites, cultural landmarks and some of the best urban spaces in our city.

There are more than 70 free things to see and do in Mississauga during Culture Days. Check it out and be a part of the celebration!

For more information and a listing of registered Culture Days events in Mississauga, visit www.mississauga.ca/culturedays.

Mayor Hazel McCallion, C.M., LL.D.

DOORS OPEN MISSISSAUGA

DOORS OPEN MISSISSAUGA 2011 SATURDAY, OCTOBER 1, 2011 10 AM – 4 PM FREE ALL EVENTS ARE RAIN OR SHINE

About Doors OpenThroughout the province, there is a growing pride in our heritage. Communities boast of their commercial buildings, courthouses, places of worship, gardens, natural heritage and other architecturally significant sites. From April to October each year, communities across Ontario open the doors to some of our most intriguing and charming sites.

Mississauga: “The Cinderella Township” to “Canada’s Sixth Largest City”This year, Doors Open Mississauga revisits the 1957 promotional film, “The Cinderella Township” as a point of departure for its annual city showcase event. This short film was created by the Township of Toronto (now City of Mississauga) to attract new industries and residents to the area. Today, the film stands as both an idyllic and starkly telling document of the great period of infrastructure and industrial development that Mississauga has undergone over the past fifty years. The film will be screening throughout the month of September on Mississauga Celebration Square. An accompanying exhibition of film stills and contemporary photographs by Marco Veltri are also on view from September to December at the Mississauga Central Library.

This project is co-presented by the City of Mississauga’s Culture Division, Mississauga Library System and Heritage Mississauga and is supported by Friends of the Library and Metalworks.

ABOUT CULTURE DAYS

Culture Days is a collaborative, national volunteer movement dedicated to raising the awareness, accessibility, participation and engagement of Canadians in the arts and cultural life of their communities. From September 30 to October 2, 2011, Culture Days Mississauga will feature free, hands-on, interactive activities that invite the public to discover the world of artists, creators, historians, architects, curators and designers at work in our city.

There are a number of Culture Days events taking place throughout Mississauga. For more details, visit www.mississauga.ca/culturedays. Please note that events are subject to change and updates will be posted online.

CUSTOMIZE YOUR DAY

It’s easy to develop your own day-long itinerary online. Visit Canada’s Culture Days celebrations website (www.culturedays.ca) and using the map and listings for Mississauga, develop an itinerary that’s perfect for you.
