UN convoys return after aid- distribution in conflict areas in Kachin State

Yangon, 30 March 2012. United Nations convoys carrying emergency relief supplies

to internally displaced people (IDPs) in two locations affected by the conflict in

Kachin State have now returned to base after distributing these items in the IDP

camps.

Reaching all IDPs in Kachin with humanitarian assistance is critically important.

This joint effort has been possible through receiving the cooperation of the

Government and the Kachin Independence Organization (KIO), as well as our

humanitarian partners on the ground, said Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator,Ashok Nigam.

In each of the two convoys, there were eight UN staff (one international and seven

national) and two UN vehicles. Trucks and truck drivers were hired commercially.

The two convoys went to two camps around Sadung and five camps in the area of

Lweje/ Mai Jayang reaching 3,300 people. They distributed a total of 54.5 tons of

food1

sufficient for one month, essential non-food items (NFIs)2, Aquatabs, oral

rehydration salts, and basic drugs. Both convoys were back to base on 29 March.

I miss my home and going to school. I wish the conflict ended and we could go back

to life as usual, said Zan Nan, a ninth grade student who fled her village home and is

now living in a shelter in Lweje with her family. We are glad to receive some of the

essential items today, they are very helpful. It is hard living in here without even

some basics, added Zan Nan.

The UN has called for sustained access to the IDPs in all areas to ensure that

adequate assistance reaches all those affected by the conflict. The present

momentum of aid delivery needs urgent support to be stepped up and maintained

before the onset of the rainy season when road conditions will deteriorate,

hardships will increase and food stocks are severely affected.

The UN has consistently pressed for independent humanitarian access in accordance

with humanitarian principles with both the Government and KIO. The UN looks to all

its humanitarian partners to join in the effort to provide humanitarian support to all

IDPs in Kachin urgently.
