Tip: Jail is NOT prison. Stacey Woelfel writes: “Jails: are facilities run by the county where prisoners go to await trial before conviction, or where they go to serve a sentence of less than one year (364 days or fewer) after conviction. Prisons: are facilities run by the state that hold convicted criminals serving sentences of one year or more.  …You are NEVER in prison if you have not yet been convicted of a crime.”

Additional Tips:

Make yourself familiar with the community. Know the major streets, highways, and landmarks. Schedule a ride-along. Knowing the community is helpful when you hear something over the scanner.

Know the difference between Columbia and Boone County, and what department to call for your story. Be aware the county and city have different ordinances.

When safe, always go to the scene. The PIO or public relations team can give you facts, but going to the scene will give you the story. At the scene, you can find people to tell the story instead of law enforcement. You can see details yourself that will help you describe the story to viewers (for example, glass and shell casings on the ground, distraught family members, shocked friends, etc.).

Assume law enforcement and witnesses or people in the area want to talk. Don’t be afraid to ask questions.

Be careful with your wording when you write stories about people accused of crimes. If the person has not been found guilty of a crime, be sure the way you write your story doesn’t convict him/her.
