Our song of choice ‘Brightdown’ is of

the Japanese rock genre.

During creation of our media product

we decided to follow, challenge and

develop the forms and conventions of

real media products within this genre.

We did this as we wanted some

originality for our upcoming artist and

product.

Comparison!!

We looked at different Japanese

rock videos and identified that

different artists used different

conventions to give them

individual identities.

Yaida Hitomi

Yaida Hitomi’s music videos always

have her as the main character within

the narrative. She is also seen to carry

a guitar around and in some shots she

has a band. These help identify and

emphasize the genre in which she is

representing and can therefore be used

to draw a specific audience. The

audience can hence relate to her with

these conventions.

• Brightdown is a fast paced song and

required lots of cuts and fades to go

with the music . This was challenging

as we had filmed our artist in different

locations. We were therefore in

danger of loosing continuity and

narrative structure. This led to the

decision to develop our Japanese rock

video. We therefore gave our artist a

rebellious attitude as most rock

productions would as seen:

•We decided to develop the rebellious attitude by adding animations in some shots within the music video.

This gave the artist her own world where she could interact with characters in a her imaginary world.

Instead of having an all rebellious and evil dominated setting, we created a world that was half innocent.

This was done intentionally to keep the audience engaged as the artist’s next moves were unpredictable.
