CAMERA SHOTS

OVERHEAD SHOT - A TYPE OF CAMERA SHOT IN WHICH THE CAMERA IS POSITIONED ABOVE THE CHARACTER, ACTION OR OBJECT BEING FILMED.

IT PUTS THE VIEWER IN A POSITION WHERE HE’S LOOKING DOWN ON THE ACTION AND OBJECTS AS IF THEY WERE A BIRD. IT CAN BE USED TO SHOW THE BROAD POSITIONS AND MOTIONS OF SEVERAL DIFFERENT CHARACTERS AND OBJECTS AT ONCE. THIS ALLOWS THE VIEWER TO BE INTRODUCED TO A SCENE AND NOT BECOMING CONFUSED IF AN ACTION SEQUENCE TAKES PLACE.

SETS UP THE MISE-EN-SCENE OF THE FILM

The background especially the location in which the film is set is established very quickly in this opening scene. For example you know the film will be set in a city as that is where the protagonist can be seen swinging around. Also you get the feeling of it being quite a light hearted film as the main character is a very typical light hearted happy hero having fun in the scene, when getting in to combat he jokes around with the villains when fighting them.

INTRODUCES MAIN CHARACTERS

The main character is the first person viewers of the film see the fact that he will be the protagonist is better highlighted by the way he seemingly fly's through the city and the bright red suit that highlights his every move. When the camera follows him it is veiwed from behind him most of the time, this sets up a feeling that the viewer is gliding along side him creating more of an attachment to this character as it gives off the feeling your part of the film.

SETS UP THE GENRE OF THE FILM

The opening of this film also sets up the genre of this film as a heroic action film, this happens quite late on in the film opening when the main character saves some during a conflict in the opening sequence. This causes the viewers to become hooked to the film in the opening as they want to know more about it as the scene progresses.
