Overview and HistoryAbout The Giving Institute

The MISSIon oF The GIvInG InSTITuTe is to actively champion thought leadership that empowers philanthropy.

Since 1935, The Giving Institute and its member firms have embraced and embodied the core values of ethics, excellence, and leadership in advancing philanthropy. Serving nonprofits of every size and purpose, from local institutions to international organizations, The Giving Institute member firms embrace the highest ethical standards and maintain a strict code of fair practices.

Beyond its original mission to promote the evolution of the professional fundraising field, the Institute’s other commitment, promoting philanthropy, has also expanded through the years. Giving USA, the annual report on the state of philanthropy in the United States, was first published as a public service in 1955. It is the longest-running, consecutively-published study of its kind.

In 1985, three Association leaders, Arthur D. Raybin, John Grenzebach, and Charles E. Lawson, incorporated Giving USA Foundation, formerly The American Association of Fundraising Counsel (AAFRC) Trust for Philanthropy, to carry out and expand a number of the public service goals of the Institute. Today the Foundation publishes Giving USA and supports research and education. The Giving Institute continues to provide financial support, expertise, and leadership to the Foundation and works in partnership with it to advance philanthropy and promote ethics in the fundraising profession.

History

• 1935 AAFRC was founded and the member firms immediately began embracing and embodying the core values of ethics, excellence, and leadership in advancing philanthropy. Their first act was to develop Standards of Practice and a Professional Code of ethics.

• 1955 Giving USA was published for the first time as a public outreach initiative of the AAFRC.

• 1985 Giving USA Foundation was formed to carry out and expand on AAFRC’s public service goals.

• 2000 AAFRC moves its main office from New York City to Indianapolis, IN.

• 2005 Upon the completion of a significant brand review, AAFRC becomes The Giving Institute. The 50th anniversary edition of Giving USA is published.

• 2010 The Giving Institute celebrates 75 years of service to the nonprofit sector.

Giving USA Foundation

Giving USA

Giving USA, the annual report on philanthropy is the seminal publication reporting on the sources and uses of charitable giving in the united States. Published since 1957, Giving USA is the longest running, most comprehensive report on philanthropy in America. For 57 years, fundraisers, nonprofit leaders, donors and volunteers, scholars, and other individuals who work in or with the charitable sector have counted on Giving USA to provide the most comprehensive charitable giving data available. no other source provides the context for annual giving like Giving USA.

Giving USA’s long history is the result of its time-tested adherence to using the most rigorous methodologies available for estimating total charitable giving in the uS each year. This includes incorporating the most up-to-date data and methodological approaches available within the estimating procedures it uses year after year.

Its research, conducted by the Indiana university Lilly Family School of Philanthropy since 2000, estimates all giving to all charitable organizations across the United States. These national estimates do not show the changes any one organization or geographical region might observe—they calculate total giving by about 117 million households across America, approximately 12.4 million corporations that claim charitable deductions, an estimated 99,000 estates, and about 76,000 foundations. The donations go to about 1.1 million IRS-registered charities, plus a conservative estimate of 222,000 American religious organizations.

Giving USA Spotlight

Giving USA Spotlight research reports address specific topics and trends in the philanthropic sector. The Spotlight allows for an in-depth look at the issues currently facing nonprofit organizations, donors, and others interested in philanthropy. The quarterly reports are an extension of the information found in each year’s Giving USA annual report. Recent Spotlight topics include: Trends in Million-Dollar-Plus Gifts Made by Individuals, The Tax Motivation for Giving, Relationship Cultivation using Social Media, Giving by Immigrants, and Women as Philanthropists.

Advancing the research, education, and public understanding of

philanthropy is the mission of Giving uSA Foundation, founded

in 1985 by The Giving Institute. headquartered in Chicago,

IL, the Foundation publishes data and trends about charitable

giving through its seminal publication, Giving USA, and quarterly

reports on topics related to philanthropy.
