It’s A Matter Of Balance!
If you or someone you love is experiencing
a loss in balance or have cut back on ac-
tivities due to a fear of falling, please con-
tact our office to sign up for “A Matter of
Balance” Classes which
will be held in late
Spring.
A Matter of Balance
is an 8-week structured
group intervention that
emphasizes practical
strategies to reduce
fear of falling and in-
crease activity levels. Participants learn
to view falls and fear of falling as con-
trollable, set realistic goals to increase
activity, change their environment to re-
duce fall risk factors, and exercise to in-
crease strength and balance. Stay tuned
for more information on this class. Mean-
while, please feel free to call the Commis-
sion on Aging to be put on the list for this
class. Also, If you know someone perfect
for leading a health program session such
as this, please let us know. Cynthia

IN LOVING MEMORY May you find comfort in knowing your thoughtful gifts have made a difference in
the lives of many area seniors. This month the Commission on Aging and Senior
Center received a love gift in memory of:
JACK PARK ZENDA GRAY LORRAINE PARKER
Memorial Mecosta County Commission on Aging
Contributions May Be 12954 80th Avenue
Sent To: Mecosta, MI 49332
Dear friends,
As the new year is now upon us I cant help but wonder how time
goes by so quickly. I remember in December thinking how nice it
would be to do something special in the community with my family
that didn't revolve around gift giving. Not that there is anything
wrong with giving gifts but sometimes it becomes too much of an “I
want, I want” affair when it could be “I’ll give, I’ll give.” It can be a
joy to give more of your time, more of your talent and more of
your heart. There are so many worthy causes in Mecosta County
but ones own family is also very im-
portant. Time spent with family and
friends can go a long way toward leading
a healthy and active life. I hope that
those who are interested, gather up their
family members and seek a cause they would like to be part of and
experience together this year. Mecosta County is full of opportunity
to be part of something bigger. Every day we spend with someone
we love is precious and for those we come across in passing we can
be a blessing to them. This isn't just for a particular holiday, but all
year long. Cynthia

January News From The Senior Center…
Hello Friends!
Well, we survived 2017 and hopefully you are looking
forward to 2018! The new year is always a time to reflect and
see if we want to make some changes. If you are looking to
make some changes maybe you would like to come out and
volunteer to deliver a few hot meals to our homebound
seniors. This time of year we are always in need of volunteer
Meals on Wheels drivers because so many of our volunteers
head to warmer weather! If you think you might be interested
call the Senior Center and ask to speak with Shawn and she
will be happy to tell you about this fantastic opportunity!
This is the time of year that I am beginning to work on Senior Enrichment Day...yes Senior
Enrichment Day! The committee starts meeting in January so that we will be ready for all of
you on the third Wednesday of June. If you have a talent that you would like to share for
Senior Enrichment Day or for workshops to hold here at the Senior Center, come see me and
share your talents! (I am specifically looking for someone who might be interested in
teaching a few knitting classes here at the Center.)
We will be starting the New Year off on the right foot with Mark & Mark on the 3rd of
January. So mark your calendars to come have lunch and enjoy their music! On Thursday
the 11th of January Nathan Myers will be here to share his musical talents, so don’t miss it!
If there are any Veterans out there that are interested in hearing about Veteran Benefits, Vice
Commander Wayne Benson of the Michigan Disabled American Veterans will be with us on
Tuesday the 16th of January.
There is so much going on and I have only touched on a few things, so please stop in and see
for yourself all the fun we are having here! We wouldn’t want you to miss out on a great
opportunity to enrich your lives. I am inviting all of you to come out to the Senior Center,
have some lunch, meet new people and share some laughs. Hope to see you soon!
~Beth~

- Bathroom Safety Tips to Prevent Falls & Injuries
walk-in bathtub can help prevent falls. Sometimes even a small step into a slippery shower can be chal-lenging and cause anxiety.
Reduce Risk of Over-Exertion- Installing a secure bathing seat, shower bench or raised toilet seat can greatly reduce your risk of injury.
Improve Visibility- For many people, frequent urina-tion (especially at night) is a common complaint. Install night lights that help illuminate the walkway to the bathroom to reduce risk.
Prevent Hot Water Burns- As we age our skin becomes thinner and more delicate. It can take longer to notice hot temperatures. Make sure your bathroom taps are clearly labeled and keep hot water tempera-tures to a maximum of 120 degrees.
A few simple changes can make a huge difference! If you need bathroom safety equipment please call the Senior Center to see what is available in our medical equipment loan shed. The Senior Center receives many donated items which you may be able to use.
Call ahead to see if we have the item you need.
According to research by the CDC, persons between the age of 75 and 85 are twice as likely as the average person to suffer an injury in the bathroom. For those over age 85, the risk of an injury goes up to more than four times.
No matter what your age it’s never a bad idea to make your bathroom safer for you or a loved one. Here are 7 tips to help:
Install Grab Bars- Grab bars give you something to grip and anchor yourself with when moving in/out of the tub or getting on/off the toilet. Also, in the case of a fall,
grab bars can help you catch or brace yourself.
Prevent Slips- Install non-slip surface on the floor of your tub or shower. Non-slip decals can be applied to bathroom tile which can be just as dangerous when wet. Remove throw rugs that do not have rubber matting to hold them in place.
Improve Accessibility- Make sure commonly used items are within easy reach, especially in the shower.
Remove Obstacles- Remove items from the bathroom that are easily tripped over. In-stalling a walk-in shower or

Offering Support and Building Independ-
ence.
Meal volunteers deliver hot, nutritious meals
to home-bound seniors who are unable to
cook for themselves. Our delivery routes,
which are within Mecosta County, generally
take about one hour and begin around 10:00
a.m.
Medical transportation drivers insure that our
seniors, who are unable to drive themselves,
make their medical appointments. Most
medical facilities are within Mecosta Coun-
ty; however, there are opportunities to drive
outside of the county if you choose to drive
further. Again, you decide the number of
days you can volunteer.
Home-bound seniors look forward to a visit
when you deliver their meal or drive them to
their medical appointment. Family members
are at ease knowing that their loved ones are
being looked after. Our community is
strengthened by your simple act of kindness
and generosity.
For information on how you can become a
volunteer, call Jo Ann Longcor, Volunteer
Coordinator at 231-972-2884 weekdays be-
tween 9:00am – 3:00pm.
We invite you to become a member of
Here’s to a wonderful new
year! I hope everyone had
a safe and happy New
Years.
We are looking for a few good volunteers!
We’re looking for people and/or couples who
would enjoy helping our Homebound Senior
Citizens by delivering lunch time meals or
driving them to their medical appointments.
Would that be you?
You can volunteer for one day a week, or
more if you’d like additional days. Individu-
als or couples, retirees, or college students in
need of a volunteer service venue can apply.
Although you would not be an employee of
the Commission on Aging, you would receive
Happy New Year
