Kel-F® PCTFE (Polychlorotrifluoroethylene)PCTFE, sometimes referred to as Kel-F® (a discontinued product from 3M) or Neoflon® (a product of Daikin Industries), combines physical and mechanical properties, nonflammability, chemical resistance, near-zero moisture absorption and excellent electrical properties not found in any other thermoplastic fluoropolymer that also performs well in a temperature range of -400°F to 400°F.

PCTFE also has high compressive strength, an exceptional resistance to cold flow. It also maintains its outstanding electrical-insulating capability through thermal cycling and in high-humidity environments. The product’s high compressive strength and dimensional stability make it a good choice for structural material, while its very low outgassing rate and permeability make PCTFE a good choice for instrumentation, laboratory, aerospace and flight applications. Transparent in color.

Applications: • Cryogenics • Valves • Seals • Pumps • Films • Gaskets• Bearings

PET (Polyethylene Terephthalate)PET is an unreinforced, semi-crystalline thermoplastic polyester derived from Polyethylene Terephthalate. It has excellent wear resistance, a low coefficient of friction, a high flexural modulus and superior dimensional stablility, making it a versatile material for designing mechanical and electromechanical parts. Because PET has no center-line porosity, the possibility of fluid absorption and leakage is virtually eliminated. PET has superior performance characteristics, particularly in wear resistance and centerline porosity, giving it an advantage over other materials for applications using solvents, chemicals and food products. It is also used in water purification systems, printing equipment, textile components, food handling equipment and valves. Natural in color. Black is available with a surcharge.

Phenolic / LaminatePhenolic, also known as Micarta®, Textolite® and Spauldite®, is a hard, dense material made by applying heat and pressure to a series of layered material, such as paper or fabric, and then impregnating it with a synthetic resin. The layered material usually consists of cellulose paper, cotton fabric, synthetic fabric, glass fabrics or unwoven fabrics. Once the layers are heated and pressure is applied, the layers are transformed into a high pressure thermoset industrial laminate. Phenolic sheet rod is manufactured from flat laminated sheet. The material is cut into strips and lathe turned into rod. Color is Natural. Black is available with a surcharge.

Benefits:• Excellent dielectric strength • Good machinability • Good dimensional stability • Good mechanical strength • Fabric grades (Linen & Canvas) are tougher and less brittle than paper grades • Able to withstand severe shock loads, repeated bending stress and has good wear resistance • Glass fabric grades have excellent impact / tensile strength and good heat / electrical resistance

PVC / CPVC (Polyvinylchloride / Chlorinated Polyvinylchloride)PVC (polyvinyl chloride) is a thermoplastic material with excellent chemical resistance and dielectric properties, good tensile, flexural and mechanical strength, low moisture absorption, exceptional dimensional stability and good flammability characteristics.

Generally there are two basic types of PVC available - rigid PVC and plasticized PVC (flexible). There are hundreds of formulations available for desired physical properties targeted to a specific application. Call Total Plastics for help in determining what will work best for you. PVC is available in a wide range of colors, as well as transparent variations. Grey is the standard color. We handle rigid industrial PVC in sheet, slab, tube, pipe, profiles, fittings and rod.

Type I PVC is a general purpose grade with good chemical resistance and a low cost-to-weight ratio.

Type II PVC has a higher impact resistance than Type I, but lower chemical resistance. It is easily thermoformed for a wide range of applications.

CPVC has a greater high temperature resistance and exceptional fire resistance properties, providing products with low flame spread and smoke generation characteristics. CPVC also has excellent corrosion resistance.

Total Plastics also handles the full range of flexible PVC which is available in sheet, film, fittings and flexible tubing. For flexible PVC / Vinyl tubing, see page 58.

Rulon® is the solution to problems where heat, cold, lubrication, wear, corrosion or friction are a design constraint. Rulon® is designed to operate dry.

Rulon® J is dull gold in color, Rulon® J has the lowest coefficient of friction of all the reinforced PTFE grades. It has the ability to run on non-ferrous and non-metallic mating surfaces such as 316 stainless steel and brass.

Rulon® LR is maroon in color, Rulon® LR is a filled PTFE material modified to increase the material’s mechanical properties. The resulting material exhibits slightly more load capacity than Rulon® AR with a corresponding decrease in flexibility. Rulon® LR is a standard bearing material and is used in sleeve, flange, thrust, and linear bearing applications.

Rulon® AR is also maroon in color and the original Rulon® material, AR has the best combination of flexibility and load carrying properties. It is recommended for seal applications. Rulon® AR is a good electrical insulator and has excellent chemical resistance.

Teflon®

Teflon®, a fluorocarbon, performs very well in a wide variety of applications, ranging from high temperature and chemical environments to areas requiring high purity and inertness.

Teflon® is available in both “unfilled” and “filled” formulations. Compounds are added to Teflon® for a variety of reasons, including improving its wear resistance, reducing creep and initial deformation, and increasing stiffness or adding conductivity. Hardness is increased with certain fillers and the coefficient of thermal expansion may be decreased. Therefore, various filled compounds of fluoropolymers (Teflon®) are available and make it possible to gain the advantages of Teflon® in applications where the unfilled resin is not desirable. Call your Total Plastics specialist to discuss your particular application.

Note: Fluorocarbons must be etched by chemical processing to achieve bondabiity and are available as a custom order.

MechanicalsACETAL PRODUCTSFor general purpose parts in wet environments.

• Low moisture absorption• High strength, stiffness• Easy to machine• No centerline porosity in Acetron® GP• Many formulation options such as Copolymer, Homopolymer, PTFE filled and Internally lubricated or enhanced wear grade

Quadrant Products (POM)Acetal provides high strength and stiffness coupled with enhanced dimensional stability and ease of machining. As a semi-crystalline material, acetal is also characterized by a low coefficient of friction and good wear properties––especially in wet environments. Because acetal absorbs minimal amounts of moisture, its physical properties remain constant in a variety of environments. Low moisture absorption results in excellent dimensional stability for close-tolerance machined parts. In high moisture or submerged applications, acetal bearings outperform nylon 4 to 1. Acetal is ideally suited for close tolerance mechanical parts and electrical insulators which require strength and stiffness. It also offers resistance to a wide range of chemicals including many solvents.

ACETRON® GP Acetal (POM-C) is Quadrant’s general purpose copolymer acetal and is the only porosity-free acetal product available today. ACETRON® GP natural and black are FDA, USDA, NSF, Canada AG and 3A-Dairy compliant.

DELRIN® Acetal (POM-H), a homopolymer acetal, offers slightly higher mechanical properties than ACETRON® GP Acetal, but may contain a low-density center, especially in larger cross-sections. ACETRON® GP Acetal also offers better chemical resistance than homopolymer acetal. Delrin® is better suited for small diameter, thin-walled bushings that benefit from the additional strength and rigidity of homopolymer acetal.

DELRIN® AF Blend is a unique thermoplastic material for use in moving parts in which low friction and long wear life are important. It is a combination of PTFE fibers uniformly dispersed in Delrin® acetal resin. This combination offers better wear characteristics than unfilled Delrin®. Delrin® AF Blend, supplied as a 2:1 blend of Delrin® AF100 and Delrin® 150 resins, has excellent sliding / friction properties. Bearings made of Delrin® AF Blend can operate at higher speeds while exhibiting reduced wear. These bearings are also essentially free of slip-stick behavior because the static and dynamic coefficient of friction is closer than with most plastics. Delrin® AF Blend retains 90% of the strength that is inherent in unmodified Delrin® acetal. Some properties are changed due to the addition of the softer PTFE fiber. The Natural color of Delrin® AF Blend is Dark Brown. Ertalyte® TX is a better value in many applications where Delrin® AP blend is considered.

DELRIN® AF 100 (unblended) offers a slightly higher limiting PV and lower coefficient of friction due to additional PTFE content. This added PTFE typically decreases the wear capability and impact strength. Delrin® AF 100 is available on a custom basis.

Acetron® GP rollers are light weight with an ability to bouce-

back making for tight tolerances.

PET-P PRODUCTS

Has the stability of Acetal.

• Good for both wet and dry environments • Excellent stain resistance• High strength and rigidity––ideal for close tolerance parts • Good wear resistance and excellent dimensional stability

ERTALYTE® PET-P (Polyethylene Terephthalate) is an unreinforced, semi-crystalline thermoplastic polyester based on PET-P. It is manufactured from proprietary resin grades. It is characterized as having the best dimensional stability coupled with excellent wear resistance, a low coefficient of friction, high strength, and resistance to moderately acidic solutions. ERTALYTE®’s properties make it especially suitable for the manufacture of precision mechanical parts which are capable of sustaining high loads and enduring wear conditions. ERTALYTE®’s continuous service temperature is 210°F and its melting point is almost 150°F higher than acetals. It retains significantly more of its original strength up to 180°F than nylon or acetal. In addition, ERTALYTE® PET-P offers good chemical and abrasion resistance. Its low moisture absorption enables mechanical and electrical properties to remain virtually unaffected by moisture. ERTALYTE® PET-P can be machined to precise detail on standard metal working equipment. ERTALYTE® is FDA compliant in Natural and Black. Natural ERTALYTE® is also USDA, 3A-Dairy and Canada AG compliant. ERTALYTE® is an excellent candidate for parts used in the food processing and equipment industries.

ERTALYTE® TX is an internally lubricated thermoplastic polyester providing enhanced wear and inertness over general purpose nylon (PA) and acetal (POM) products. Containing uniformly dispersed solid lubricant, ERTALYTE® TX provides a lower wear rate and coefficient of friction than unmodified polyesters like PET or PBT and even internally lubricated materials like Delrin® AF blend. ERTALYTE® TX excels under both high pressure and high velocity conditions. It is also ideally suited for applications involving soft metal and plastic mating surfaces.

• Excellent chemical resistance • Essentially zero moisture absorption• Machines to tight tolerances • Excellent alternative to PEEK at lower temperatures

Techtron® and Quadrant PPS products offer the broadest resistance to chemicals of any advanced engineering plastic. They have no known solvents below 392°F and offer inertness to steam, strong bases, fuels and acids. Minimal moisture absorption and a very low coefficient of linear thermal expansion, combined with Quadrant’s proprietary stress relieving processes, make these PPS products ideally suited for precise tolerance machined components. In addition, PPS products exhibit excellent electrical characteristics and are inherently flame retardant.

TECHTRON® PPS is unlike reinforced PPS products, because it is easily machined to close tolerances. It is ideal for structural applications in corrosive environments or as a PEEK replacement at lower temperatures. TECHTRON® PPS is Off White in color. TECHTRON® PPS is FDA compliant.

TECHTRON® HPV exhibits excellent wear resistance and a low coefficient of friction. It overcomes the disadvantages of virgin PPS caused by a high coefficient of friction and of glass fiber reinforced PPS, which can cause premature wear of the counterface in moving-part applications.

• Excellent wear and frictional behavior • Excellent chemical and hydrolysis resistance• Very good dimensional stability • Good electrical insulating and dielectric properties• Inherent low flammability • Excellent resistance against high energy radiation

QUADRANT GF40 PPS is the most recognized PPS. It is a compression molded analogue to Ryton® R4 resin. It offers better dimensional stability and thermal performance than TECHTRON® PPS and maintains its strength to above 425°F.

QUADRANT BG PPS (Bearing Grade Ryton®) is internally lubricated and carbon fiber reinforced compression molded PPS offering a low coefficient of thermal expansion and uncompromised chemical resistance. It is well suited for wear applications or when an electrically conductive material is required.

FLUOROSINT® PTFE-BASED PRODUCTSMost dimensionally stable PTFE-based product from Quadrant.

• Chemical resistance parallels PTFE • Continuous use temperatures to 500°F• Better wear resistance than PTFE • Higher load carrying capability• 1/9 of the deformation under load • Lower coefficient of thermal expansion

FLUOROSINT®’s unique properties are the result of a proprietary process in which synthetically manufactured mica is chemically linked to PTFE. This bonding results in properties not normally attainable in reinforced PTFE. FLUOROSINT® grades offer an excellent combination of low frictional properties and dimensional stability.

FLUOROSINT® 500 has nine times greater resistance to deformation under load than unfilled PTFE. Its coefficient of linear thermal expansion approaches the expansion rate of aluminum, and is 1⁄5 that of PTFE––often eliminating fit and clearance problems. It is 1⁄3 harder than PTFE, has better wear characteristics and maintains low frictional properties. FLUOROSINT® 500 is also non-abrasive to most mating materials.

FLUOROSINT® 207 has unmatched dimensional stability, excellent creep resistance and its white color uniquely positions this material to serve FDA regulated applications. It is non-permeable in steam and complies with the FDA’s regulation 21 CFR 175.300. Its relative wear rate is 1⁄20 the rate of PTFE below 300°F, making it an excellent choice for aggressive service bearings and bushings. PEEK (Polyetheretherketone)Chemically resistant structural and bearing and wear material for continuous use to 480°F.

• Excellent chemical resistance • Very low moisture absorption• Inherently good wear and abrasion resistance • Unaffected by continuous exposure to hot water or steam

KETRON® PEEK grades offer chemical and hydrolysis resistance similar to PPS, but can operate at higher temperatures. PEEK 1000 offers steam and wear resistance, while carbon-reinforced PEEK provides excellent wear capabilities. PEEK HPV, offers outstanding bearing performance. PEEK can be used continuously to 480°F and in hot water or steam without permanent loss in physical properties. For hostile environments, PEEK is a high strength alternative to fluoropolymers. PEEK carries a V-O flammability rating and exhibits very low smoke and toxic gas emission when exposed to flame.

KETRON® 1000 PEEK is a general purpose grade that is unreinforced and offers the highest elongation and toughness of all PEEK grades. The newly available Black PEEK 1000 is ideal for instrument components where aesthetics are important, as well as for seal components where ductility and inertness are important. KETRON® 1000 PEEK is FDA compliant.

KETRON® GF30 PEEK (30% Glass Reinforced) has the addition of glass fibers which significantly reduces the expansion rate and increases the flexural modulus of PEEK. This grade is ideal for structural applications that require improved strength, stiffness or stability, especially at temperatures above 300°F.

KETRON® CA30 PEEK (30% Carbon Fiber Reinforced) has the addition of carbon fibers to enhance the compressive strength and stiffness of PEEK, and dramatically lower its expansion rate. It offers designers optimum wear resistance and load carrying capability in a PEEK-based product. This grade provides more thermal conductivity than unreinforced PEEK–– increasing heat dissipation from bearing surfaces improving bearing life and capability.

KETRON® HPV PEEK (Bearing Grade) is carbon fiber reinforced with graphite and PTFE lubricants, our newest grade of PEEK offers the lowest coefficient of friction and the best machinability for all PEEK grades. An excellent combination of low friction, low wear, high LPV, low mating part wear and easy machining, make it ideal for aggressive service bearings.

PAI (Polyamide-Imide)Stiffness and strength at temperature extremes.

• Maintains strength and stiffness to 500°F • Minimal expansion rate to 500°F• Excellent wear resistance in bearing grades• Able to endure harsh thermal, chemical and stress conditions

DURATRON® PAI (Formerly TORLON®) exhibits versatile performance capabilities and proven use in a broad range of applications. DURATRON® shapes are offered in extruded and compression molded grades. DURATRON® is the highest performing, melt processable plastic. It has superior resistance to elevated temperatures. It is capable of performing under severe stress conditions at continuous temperatures to 500°F. Parts machined from DURATRON® stock shapes provide greater compressive strength and higher impact resistance than most advanced engineering plastics. DURATRON® PAI’s extremely low coefficient of linear thermal expansion and high creep resistance deliver excellent dimensional stability over its entire service range. DURATRON® is an amorphous material with a Tg (glass transition temperature) of 537°F. DURATRON® stock shapes are post-cured, eliminating the need for additional curing by the end user in most situations. A post-curing cycle is sometimes recommended for components fabricated from extruded shapes where optimization of chemical resistance and / or wear performance is required. For large shapes or custom geometries like tubular bar, compression molded DURATRON® shapes offer designers economy and flexibility. Another benefit of selecting a compression molded grade is that resins are cured, or “imidized” prior to molding which eliminates the need to post-cure shapes or parts fabricated from compression molded shapes. Popular extrusion and injection molding grades of DURATRON® are offered as compression molded shapes. Typically, you can identify a compression molded grade as having a second digit of “5” in the product name.

ECOGEHR® C-L is comprised of the wood components cellulose, natural fibres, lignin and fatty acids. It possesses many interesting properties that together are very similar to natural wood. Consequently, this material is very pleasant to the touch and is easily workable. It also has a high degree of rigidity (and a tensile module of elasticity up to 616 kpsi). Clearly, its advantages compared with grown wood lie in the material’s homogeneity. Whereas wood displays density variations resulting from growth rings or imperfections (branches), ECOGEHR® C-L provides an isotropic material texture and reproducible properties. This 100% renewable material is largely neutral in terms of its CO2 balance, and like wood it can be disposed of via decomposition or burning. C-L is thermoformable, printable and bondable.

ECOGEHR® WPC (Wood-polymer-composites) materials are composites of standard polymers and wood fibres. The excellent binding of the wood fibres to the polymer gives the materials extremely high mechanical strength. WPC is weather-resistant and can be given anti-bacterial, fungicidal and UV resistant properties as an option.

ECOGEHR® WPC-30PPECOGEHR® WPC-30PE

ECOGEHR® PA are bio-based polyamides (PA) and are obtained from the oil of the castor oil seed. Components of this oil can be isolated, and can then be incorporated into PA up to a certain percentage or even form the entire basis of a polyamide. With these materials, we can already offer properties that are compulsory for the industrial use of plastics. With their high continuous use temperatures, these materials can already be categorized as industrial plastics, and are also suitable for long-term use.

DURATRON® CU60 PBIBest mechanical properties to 800°F.

• Highest mechanical properties of any plastic above 400°F.• Highest heat deflection temperature 800°F, with a continuous service capability of 750°F in inert environments, or 650°F in air with short term exposure potential to 1,000°F.• Lowest coefficient of thermal expansion and highest compressive strength of all unfilled plastics.

DURATRON® CU60 PBI (Formerly CELAZOLE®) is the highest performance engineering thermoplastic available today. It offers the highest heat resistance and mechanical property retention over 400°F of any unfilled plastic. It has better wear resistance and load carrying capabilities at extreme temperatures than any other reinforced or unreinforced engineering plastic. As an unreinforced material, DURATRON® PBI is very “clean” in terms of ionic impurity and it does not outgas (except water), making this material very attractive to semiconductor manufacturers for vacuum chamber applications. DURATRON® PBI has excellent ultrasonic transparency which makes it an ideal choice for parts such as probe tip lenses in ultrasonic measuring equipment. DURATRON® PBI is also an excellent thermal insulator. Other plastics in melt do not stick to PBI, making it ideal for contact seals and insulator bushings in plastic production and molding equipment.

Note: DURATRON® PBI is extremely hard and can be challenging to fabricate. Polycrystalline diamond tools are recommended. Call TPI for a fabrication guide.

Westlake Plastic compression molded sheet is known worldwide and is a preferred sheet, especially for machining and fabrication. When deciding on a compression molded sheet versus an extruded sheet there are distinct differences. Material stability, sheet size, and surface finish are all factors to be considered. Westlake compression molded sheets are formed under heat and pressure and produce a very dimensionally stable, virtually stress-free sheet, ideal for machining and fabrication. When machining close tolerance parts, a fabricator will experience minimal material movement. Westlake’s sheets have stress levels that are extremely low or nonexistent, in some cases less than those typically found in the same materials that have been extruded and secondarily annealed. Westlake’s compression molded sheet offers a wide variety of surface finishes including press polished, haircell and other custom surface textures versus the extruded/annealed sheet which often has with a rough planed surface.
