Understanding Aerodynamics: Arguing from the Real Physics J. Douglas Mclean 978-1-119-96751-4 / 1-119-96751-1 592 pp. Pub: 16/11/12 Aeronautic & Aerospace Engineering Based on the author's decades of industrial experience with Boeing, this book helps students and practicing engineers to gain a greater physical understanding of aerodynamics. Relying on clear physical arguments and examples, Mclean provides a much-needed, fresh approach to this sometimes contentious subject without shying away from addressing "real" aerodynamic situations as opposed to the oversimplified ones frequently used for mathematical convenience. Motivated by the belief that engineering practice is enhanced in the long run by a robust understanding of the basics as well as real cause-and-effect relationships that lie behind the theory, he provides intuitive physical interpretations and explanations, debunking commonly-held misconceptions and misinterpretations, and building upon the contrasts provided by wrong explanations to strengthen understanding of the right ones.

• Provides intuitive physical interpretations and explanations, debunking commonly-held misconceptions and misinterpretations.

• Offers new insights to some familiar topics, for example, what the Biot-Savart law really means and why it causes so much confusion, what "Reynolds number" and "incompressible flow" really mean, and a real physical explanation for how an airfoil produces lift.

• Addresses "real" aerodynamic situations as opposed to the oversimplified ones frequently used for mathematical convenience, and omits mathematical details whenever the physical understanding can be conveyed without them.

Design and Analysis of Composite Structures: With Applications to Aerospace Structures, 2e Christos Kassapoglou 978-1-118-40160-6 / 1-118-40160-3 350 pp. Pub: 05/04/13 Aeronautic & Aerospace Engineering Design and Analysis of Composite Structures: With Applications to Aerospace Structures, 2nd Edition builds on the first edition and includes two new chapters on composite fittings and the design of a composite panel, as well additional exercises. The book enables graduate students and engineers to generate meaningful and robust designs of complex composite structures. A compilation of analysis and design methods for structural components made of advanced composites, it begins with simple parts such as skins and stiffeners and progresses through to applications such as entire components of fuselages and wings. It provides a link between theory and day-to-day design practice, using theory to derive solutions that are applicable to specific structures and structural details used in industry.

Starting with the basic mathematical derivation followed by simplifications used in real-world design, this book presents the level of accuracy and range of applicability of each method along with design guidelines derived from experience combined with analysis. The author solves in detail examples taken from actual applications to show how the concepts can be applied, solving the same design problem with different methods based on different drivers (e.g. cost or weight) to show how the final configuration changes as the requirements and approach change. Each chapter is followed by exercises that represent specific design problems often encountered in the aerospace industry but which are also applicable in the in the automotive, marine, and construction industries.

Aeroelasticity using the Finite Element Method Erasmo Carrera, Marco Petrolo, Alberto Varello, Enrico Zappino 978-1-118-33785-1 / 1-118-33785-9 300 pp. Pub: 26/04/13 Aeronautic & Aerospace Engineering Uses advanced structural theories to formulate and describe the coupling between finite elements and classical aerodynamic theories.

Aeroelasticity using the Finite Element Method deals with the Aeroelasticity of lifting bodies (wings and panels) by the Finite Element Method (FEM). It focuses on Aeroelasticity problems related to wings and panels: wings in subsonic range and panel in supersonic regime are treated. The structural models used are built by using classical and advanced one-dimensional (beams) and two-dimensional models (plates/shells) for the analysis of metallic and layered structures made by advanced composite materials.

The elastic problems are formulated by means of finite element method. The aerodynamic fields and loadings are expressed by considering known theories used in classical aeroelasticity analysis: strip theory (in both steady and unsteady form), Theodorsen models, Vortex Lattice Method, Double Lattice Method and Piston Theory. Static and dynamic aeroelastic responses are both addressed. Static (divergence) and dynamic (flutter) response, including panel flutter are detailed in the book.

Automotive Vibration Testing, with Modal Testing and Health Monitoring Joseph Slater 978-0-470-02680-9 / 0-470-02680-4 400 pp. Pub: 24/05/13 Aeronautic & Aerospace Engineering In Vibration Testing, with Modal Testing Analysis and Health Monitoring, Slater addresses the need for an accessible and practical text covering the broad field of vibration testing in structures and machine health monitoring. The book is divided into clear chapters giving an overview of the major topics. This begins with a review of the fundamentals (both single and multiple degree of freedom systems), then goes on to cover probability theory, random signal analysis, equipment and initiation tests in vibration testing, modal analysis and correction, and machine health monitoring. Generally, the book is practice oriented with real-world examples, problems, laboratory experiments and a solutions manual, additionally, there are sufficient sections written from a theoretical perspective to allow the instructor to follow either an applied or theoretical track, at their discretion. In creating a book with this scope, Slater lays the foundation for more rigorous treatments of the subject, while training the engineer to be competent in testing.

• Broad coverage gives a multi-disciplinary perspective for both mechanical and electrical engineers.

• Application-oriented sections with examples, problems, laboratory experiments and software give the text a practical focus.

• Combines the areas of structural testing with machine health monitoring, providing an approach that is rarely found in other textbooks.

• Solutions manual and accompanying software available online.

Mechanical Engineering Finite Element Analysis of Structures by Unified Formulation Erasmo Carrera 978-1-119-94121-7 / 1-119-94121-0 256 pp. Pub: 08/03/13 Computational / Numerical Methods The Finite Element Method (FEM) is a computational tool widely used to analyze structures. Currently, there are a number of different approaches to analysis using FEM that vary according to the type of structure being analyzed – plates and beams may use 1D or 2D approaches, shells and solids 2D or 3D approaches and methods that work for one structure are typically not optimized to work for another. Carrera has developed a new method referred to as the Unified Formulation which can be applied to any elastic solid structure, so simplifying the process considerably. This is what is described in the book.

This book deals with the Finite Element Method for the analysis of elastic structures, such as beams, plates, shells and solids. The modern approach of Unified Formulation (UF), as proposed by the lead author, deals with the consideration of one-dimensional (beams), two-dimensional (plates and shells) and three-dimensional (solids) elements. Applications are given for structures which are typically employed in civil, mechanical and aerospace engineering fields. Additional topics including mixed order elements formulated on the basis of different kinematic assumptions, extension to layered composite structures and the analysis of multifield problems involving mechanical, electrical and thermal loadings are also addressed.

Erasmo Carrera, Professor of Aerospace Structures & Computational Aeroelasticity and Deputy Director of Department of Aerospace Engineering, Politecnico di Torino, has authored circa 200 journal and conference papers. Maria Cinefra, Marco Petrolo and Enrico Zappino are research scientists in the Department of Aeronautics & Space Engineering, Politecnico di Torino.

Metal Failures: Mechanisms, Analysis, Prevention, 2e A. J. McEvily, Jirapong Kasivitamnuay 978-1-118-16396-2 / 1-118-16396-6 352 pp. Pub: 03/04/13 Failure Fracture Failure analysis is of critical importance in the world today. This is due in part to the high cost in lives and money of catastrophic failures that may have been prevented. Failures effect structures in a broad range of industries from machinery to aircraft, building structures, and as we've seen recently nuclear power facilities. To analyze failure, engineers and designers need to understand not only what happened but also how, from a structural point-of-view, the failure occurred. An outcome of a successful investigation may lead to improvements in design and manufacture which preclude a particular type of accident from happening again. An investigation may also lead to a proper assignment of responsibility either to the operator, the manufacturer, or the maintenance and inspection organization involved.

McEvily's book is one of the only available that covers not only how failure occurs but also the examination methods developed to expose the reasons for failure. The new edition will contain updates of all chapters plus new coverage of; elastic behavior and plastic deformation, localized necking, the phenomenological aspects of fatigue, fatigue crack propagation, alloys and coatings, tensors and tensor notations, and much more.

• Revision of a well-known classic that is considered to have the most comprehensive coverage of both the "how" and "why" of metal failure.

Performance-Based Gear Metrology: Kinematic - Transmission - Error Computation and Diagnosis William D. Mark 978-1-119-96169-7 / 1-119-96169-6 280 pp. Pub: 09/11/12 Solid Mechanics A mathematically rigorous explanation of how manufacturing deviations and damage on the working surfaces of gear teeth cause transmission-error contributions to vibration excitations.

Some gear-tooth working-surface manufacturing deviations of significant amplitude cause negligible vibration excitation and noise, yet others of minuscule amplitude are a source of significant vibration excitation and noise. Presently available computer-numerically-controlled dedicated gear metrology equipment can measure such error patterns on a gear in a few hours in sufficient detail to enable accurate computation and diagnosis of the resultant transmission-error vibration excitation. How to efficiently measure such working-surface deviations, compute from these measurements the resultant transmission-error vibration excitation, and diagnose the manufacturing source of the deviations, is the subject of this book.

Practical Multiscaling Jacob Fish 978-1-118-41068-4 / 1-118-41068-8 350 pp. Pub: 01/02/13 Solid Mechanics Multiscale approaches fall into one of the two categories: information-passing (or hierarchical) and concurrent. In the information-passing multiscale approach the fine-scale response is idealized (approximated or unresolved) and its overall (average) response is infused into coarse-scale. In the concurrent approaches, fine- and coarse- scale resolutions are simultaneously employed in different portions of the problem domain and exchange of information occurs through the interface. The information-passing multiscale approach aims at deriving constitutive equations (or directly field quantities) from finer scale(s), where established laws of physics are believed to be better understood. The enormous gains that can be accrued by this approach have been reported in numerous articles. Multiscale computations have been identified as one of the areas critical to future nanotechnology and biotechnology advances. . Practical Multiscaling covers fundamental modeling techniques aimed at bridging diverse temporal and spatial scales ranging from the atomic level to a full-scale product level. The focus is on practical multiscale methods that account for fine-scale (material) details, but do not require their precise resolution. It also deals with both theory and practical utilization of multiscale principles in practice. The multiscale design software and a detailed tutorial provide a hands-on-experience in utilizing multiscale technology for practical applications.

Design of Foundations for Expansive Soils John D. Nelson, Geoff K. Chao, Daniel D. Overton 978-0-470-58152-0 / 0-470-58152-2 384 pp. Pub: 29/05/13 Soil (Civil Engineering) Expansive soil is a term generally applied to any soil or rock material that has a potential for shrinking or swelling under changing moisture conditions. The primary problem that arises with regard to expansive soils is that deformations are significantly greater than in non-expansive soils and the size and direction of the deformations is difficult to predict. Movement is usually in an uneven pattern and of such magnitude to cause extensive damage to the structures and the pavement resting on them. Expansive soils cause more damage to structures, particularly light building and pavements, than any other natural hazard including earthquakes and floods.

This book fills the significant void covering the design and construction of foundations for expansive soils. It describes proven methods for identifying and analyzing expansive soils and developing foundation designs appropriate for a specific location.

Only modern guide to the design and construction of foundations on expansive soils.

• Provides a succinct introduction to the basics of expansive soils and their threats from a design perspective rather than theoretic.

• Includes coverage of both shallow and deep foundation design, as well as soil remediation techniques backed up with numerous case studies covering both commercial and residential projects.

• Covers the most commonly used laboratory tests and site investigation techniques used for establishing the physical properties of expansive soils.

Industrial Engineering A Project Manager's Book of Forms: A Companion to the PMBOK Guide, 2e Cynthia Snyder Stackpole 978-1-118-43078-1 / 1-118-43078-6 256 pp. Pub: 02/04/13 Industrial Engineering / Project Management Every four years the Project Management Institute (PMI) revises their Guide to the Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK® Guide), which has become the de facto global standard for the profession. This standard is the basis for the Project Management Professional or PMP Certification Exam and all of the training that revolves around preparing the estimated 25,000 individuals who sit for this exam each year. Every one of PMI's current 400,000 members receives a copy of the PMBOK Guide as reference as well. Though the Body of Knowledge is an outline of the subject and profession it is only an outline. It remains to the individual project managers and corporate PMO's or Project Management Offices to actually translate the Guide into real world practice successfully. Forms are heavily used to document each process and procedure throughout a project. Unfortunately few standardized forms exist and it is left to the individual or PMO Head to produce the forms they need on the job.

This is the second edition of a very successful source book of forms coupled with the procedures for using them that follows the latest fifth edition of PMI's PMBOK® Guide.

• The only book of forms that exactly follows the content of the PMBOK Guide, 5th Edition including new areas added for this edition.

Spring/Summer 2012 Aerospace The Argumentative Aerodynamicist J. Douglas Mclean 978-1-119-96751-4 / 1-119-96751-1 600 pp. Pub: 07/09/12 Aeronautic & Aerospace Engineering Based on the author's decades of industrial experience with Boeing, this book helps students and practicing engineers to gain a greater physical understanding of aerodynamics. Relying on clear physical arguments and examples, Mcleanprovides a much-needed, fresh approach to this sometimes contentious subject without shying away from addressing "real" aerodynamic situations as opposed to the oversimplified ones frequently used for mathematical convenience.

• Provides a refreshing view of aerodynamics that is based on the author's decades of industrial experience yet is always tied to basic fundamentals.

• Provides intuitive physical interpretations and explanations, debunking commonly-held misconceptions and misinterpretations

Theory of Lift: Introductory Computational Aerodynamics with MATLAB and Octave Geordie McBain 978-1-119-95228-2 / 1-119-95228-X 338 pp. Pub: 03/08/12 Aeronautic & Aerospace Engineering

Accessible introduction to aerodynamics using a unique computational approach based on widely available MATLAB® software tools.

Based on the author's years of experience teaching aerodynamics to students, he has developed an approach combining the use of widely available MATLAB commercial code (also compatible with Octave GNU open source code) with clear narrative explanations of the concepts that simplifies the understanding of aerodynamics without sacrificing the mathematical underpinnings or leaving the reader overwhelmed with complex formulas. The ability of the reader to download and run the code examples makes this an ideal self-learning tool, as well as a valuable course text.

The choice of compatible MATLAB/Octave code ensures anyone can run the examples -- either using open-source GNU Octave software as many consultancies and small firms do, or using the MATLAB commercial application (including the student edition) which is used widely in industry and is almost ubiquitous in academia. The code has been carefully compiled and checked for compatibility with both applications.

• Unique approach clearly explains aerodynamic concepts with less emphasis on complex mathematical explanations, instead using pre-coded MATLAB®/Octave examples to demonstrate concepts and illustrate the maths behind them.

• Provides a clear introduction to aerodynamics based on a line and panel methods.

• Associated website includes downloadable code for all examples in the book.

This includes the methodology for general tooth forms, radius of torsure', cylinder of osculation, and cylindroid of torsure; the author has also completely reworked the ‘3 laws of gearing', the first law re-written to better parallel the existing ‘Law of Gearing" as pioneered by Leonard Euler, expanded from Euler's original law to encompass non-circular gears and hypoid gears, the 2nd law of gearing describing a unique relation between gear sizes, and the 3rd law completely reworked from its original form to uniquely describe a limiting condition on curvature between gear teeth, with new relations for gear efficiency are presented based on the kinematics of general toothed wheels in mesh. There is also a completely new chapter on gear vibration load factor and impact.

Progressing from the fundamentals of geometry to construction of gear geometry and application, Kinematic Geometry of Gearing presents a generalised approach for the integrated design and manufacture of gear pairs, cams and all other types of toothed/motion/force transmission mechanisms using computer implementation based on algebraic geometry.

Systems Engineering Cost Estimation with COSYSMO R. Valerdi 978-0-470-19549-9 / 0-470-19549-5 390 pp. Pub: 28/09/12 Systems Engineering & Management

This book introduces the only systems engineering parametric cost model available an industry-calibrated model known as the Constructive Systems Engineering Cost Model (COSYSMO). Lack of such a model in the past has caused systems engineering costs to be bundled with other program management costs. Its use will allow for sufficiently quantifiable justification for properly assigning systems engineering costs.

• COSYSMO (Constructive Systems Engineering Cost Model) is the only systems engineering parametric cost model available.

• Three commercial tool vendors have incorporated the COSYSMO algorithm in their product suite. The three vendors are Galorath Inc., PRICE Systems and Softstar Systems.

• The author of this book is the originator of COSYSMO.

• The book includes a case study.

Well-known software engineering author Capers Jones1 indicates that the U.S. market for software project management tools is approximately $1 billion annually, and that about 19% of these tools are cost estimation tools (about $200 million). Project management tools for hardware projects probably represent a smaller market since they are more predictable development activities. Considering only the software cost estimation tool market of $200 million, it is reasonable to assume that the market for systems engineering cost estimation tools can approach a similar market size in the next 10 years. Since COSYSMO is the only parametric cost estimation model currently available, there is an obvious opportunity for this book to be at the forefront of this growth.

Strategies to the Prediction, Mitigation and Management of Product Obsolescence Bjoern Bartels, Ulrich Ermel, Peter Sandborn, Michael G. Pecht 978-1-118-14064-2 / 1-118-14064-8 304 pp. Pub: 28/05/12 Systems Engineering & Management This book describes the fundamental issues associated with the occurrence of obsolescence and its management in order to build a consistent basis for its management, including prediction, life cycle forecasting, reactive and proactive mitigations, and strategic treatments.

Supply chains for electronic products are primarily driven by consumer electronics. Every year new mobile phones, computers and gaming consoles are introduced, driving the continued applicability of Moore's law. The semiconductor manufacturing industry is highly dynamic and releases new, better and cheaper products day by day. But what happens to long-field life products like airplanes or ships, which need the same components for decades? How do electronic and also non-electronic systems that need to be manufactured and supported of decades manage to continue operation using parts that were available for a few years at most? This book attempts to answer these questions.

This is the only book on the market that covers obsolescence forecasting methodologies, including forecasting tactics for hardware and software that enable cost-effective proactive product life-cycle management. This book describes how to implement a comprehensive obsolescence management system within diverse companies. Strategies to the Prediction, Mitigation and Management of Product Obsolescence is a must-have work for all professionals in product/project management, sustainment engineering and purchasing.

• Offers all known strategies for both reactive management of obsolescence and proactive counteraction.
