Two-pole voltage testers

A two-pole voltage tester is a basic requirement for any electri-cian. The main job of a voltage tester is to measure if there isvoltage or not. It is the only instrument approved for testing thatfulfils the requirements of the German workers’ protection law.A voltage tester may also have extra features such as phasetesting, continuity testing or illuminated testing probes.

Digital multimeters

Multimeters are capable of measuring a number of variables. Each instrument can measure voltage and resistance, as well asperforming continuity and diode testing as standard. In addition, the individual multimeters also feature extra measuring optionssuch as current, frequency, capacitance and temperature. Digi-tal multimeters have the advantage of a clear display which canbe read easily and directly. With these instruments, mistakesarising from faulty calculations of the measuring ranges or mis-reading the display are a thing of the past.

Current clamps

Digital current clamps, clamp meter attachments and adaptorsare used to measure AC and DC currents. The major advantageof these instruments is that the current can be measured with-out being interrupted. In other words, it is not necessary to stripthe conductor. For the current to be measured, all you have todo is clamp the meter right round the individual conductor. A lotof current clamps can also be used to measure voltage, resist-ance or frequency.

Continuity testers

The fully insulated plastic housing of our continuity testers is im-pact-resistant and unbreakable, making these instruments idealfor daily use, even in tough conditions. The integrated torchmakes it easier to identify defective cables quickly and safely. The results of the continuity test can be conveyed visually andacoustically. Some continuity testers have extra features in ad-dition to their main use, such as non-contact voltage testing.

Socket and RCD testers

Socket and RCD testers are two instruments in one. To test asocket, the instrument checks the socket wiring, showing uppotentially fatal connection faults by means of different indicatorlights. The RCD tester can be used to test an RCD circuit, withthe advantage that this test is carried out according to fixed cri-teria regarding the tripping time and the rated fault current.

Know-how

What is the difference between a two-pole voltage testerand a measuring instrument?

The main difference between two-pole voltage testers and measuring instruments isthe fact that they are subject to different norms. While the EN 61010 norm applies tomeasuring instruments, two-pole voltage testers are subject to EN 61243-3. The volt-age tester norm serves to guarantee maximum functionality and safety, and exceedsthe requirements of the measuring instrument norm for the intended application. Mea-suring instruments which look like voltage testers but do not fulfil the high standardsdemanded by the EN 61243-3 norm for voltage testers are often wrongly consideredas voltage testers. However, the way an instrument looks says nothing about whetherit has been tested according to the norms for voltage testers or measuring instru-ments, given that it is much easier to comply with the testing requirements of thenorm for measuring instruments. Users can recognise a voltage tester by the fact thatit turns on automatically as soon as a voltage is detected.

What is better – or rather, safer – about the voltage tester norm EN 61243-3 compared to the EN 61010 measuring instrument norm?

There is no set requirement. The measuringinstrument often has to be switched on to activateit and establish whether a voltage exists.

There is no set requirement. Most instruments do not work if the battery is dead or none hasbeen inserted.

There are no measurement guidelines.

EN 61243-3 voltage tester norm-10 °C to +55 °C. Functionality is tested andguaranteed in this range. The voltage tester must show that a voltage ispresent without operating any controls such asswitches or the like. This offers users a very highdegree of protection. The voltage tester has a redundant display whichalways warns the user of shock-hazard voltage, regardless of whether the battery is dead or nonehas been inserted.Voltage testers must comply with certain meas-urements which guarantee that the user’s hand always remains at a particular distance from thetest point. This serves to protect the user fromelectric shocks. Following two hours at a temperature of -10 °C, all contact areas of the surface are subjected to 3 impacts with a force of 1 joule. This guaranteesat least twice as much impact resistance. The user must be protected against accidentalcontact when changing the batteries so that theuser is safe, even in the case of incorrect use.

Know-how

In what ways does the current norm for voltage testersdiffer from the old one?

The main differences from the previous norm serve to increase user safety. The follow-ing examples make that clear:

Don’t Weidmüller/Steinel voltage testers need two push buttons toconform with the norm?

All Weidmüller/Steinel voltage testers are equipped with high input resistance so thatthe operating current never exceeds 3.5 mA. This not only conforms to the norm forvoltage testers; it also guarantees the user’s safety at all times. What’s more, our volt-age testers are convenient for the user as they can be used with one hand.

VDE 0682 Part 401)

Maximum contact currentOld norm (VDE 0680 Part 5)

Current norm (EN 61243-3,VDE 0682 Part 401)

When testing voltage, the voltage tester had no set time in which to reset itselfto an operating current of max. 5 mA.When testing voltage, the voltage tester may not exceed the maximum operatingcurrent of 3.5 mA after a 5-second period. If the operating current is above 3.5 mA,the voltage tester must either have a push button on each testing probe to activatemeasurement or the contact electrodes must be mechanically protected fromaccidental contact.

Page 5: Measuring and testing instruments · Automatic measuring range selection The measuring instrument automatically selects the most suitable measuring range Bargraph This digital display

What can voltage testers be used for?

Both the old and current voltage tester norms state that voltage testers must be ableto be used safely to completely check low voltages up to 1000 V. This means thateven voltage testers with smaller measuring ranges guarantee user protection up to1000 V. Weidmüller/Steinel voltage testers can be used in all low-voltage networks upto 1000 V in accordance with EN 61243-3, regardless of the overvoltage category towhich the installed units in this sector are allotted.

What does the CAT rating mean?

CAT is an abbreviation for category. This rating could refer to the overvoltage category, the usage category or the measuring range category. Which category the CAT ratingrefers to is always based on the relevant norm.

Car Check

An automotive voltage tester with cabletest function. Thanks to its low powerconsumption of 1.5 mA, the Car Check is particularly well suited to identifyingfaults in electronic components wherestandard test lamps would often causedamage. That’s why the Car Check has apiercing probe with a sliding mechanism, making stripping prior to testing unneces-sary. The tester has an extra long cablemeasuring 130 cm.
