CHOSEN BY… MARY WELSHOn this delightful walk you either cross,

or see, a variety of spectacular bridges: look for the unusual ornate bridge standing firm over the wide, rushing River Almond; enjoy several flaring aqueducts, one of which you cross with the Union Canal beside you; and many exquisite small stone-arched bridges over the leat that feeds the Union Canal and is your companion for much of the way.

1 StartFrom back of car park, take

signposted path to ‘Visitor Centre’, through trees and down steps to descend road.

Beyond centre turn L, to side of River Almond. Walk upstream past amazing rapids. Carry on to see, but not cross, ornate Nasmyth Bridge (Almondell Bridge on map). Head on beside river to your L. Just before reaching green metal footbridge over river, look ahead to see attractive narrow leat, also dramatic Camp Viaduct beyond.

2 2km/1¼ mileCross green footbridge

over river. Wind L keeping leat R. Continue to other side of Nasmyth Bridge having made pleasing loop. Turn acute R up metalled track to take easy-to-miss earth path, L, through rhododendrons. Climb gently until it levels then

Meall a’ Bhuachaille and if the neighbouring peak of Creagan Gorm is added then you have a stimulating and beautiful walk. The route rewards you with some of the finest views within the Cairngorm National Park – Loch Morlich, Cairn Gorm, Ben Rinnes and the Moray Firth are all visible from the tops. Meall a’ Bhuachaille rises to 2,658ft, making it one of Scotland’s 222 Corbetts, and therefore care should be taken, particularly in poor weather or icy conditions.

1 StartFrom Glenmore Visitor

Centre car park’s L corner, cross bridge, follow road through upper car park. Turn R over another bridge then bear L onto stony track signposted ‘Meall a’ Bhuachaille’. This climbs steeply through Glenmore Forest. Gradient eases as junction is reached. Turn L onto path, which climbs gradually. At fork go R with steady ascent soon leading onto open hillside – the heather-clad slopes of Meall a’ Bhuachaille, dotted with Scots pine, rise ahead.

2 1.5km/1 mileFollow superbly maintained

path, soon bearing R to climb steadily north-east to col in between Meall a’ Bhuachaille and Creagan Gorm. There are � �

descend before going down railed steps to path by river. Ignore fine suspension bridge ahead and walk, R, along lovely way beside leat.

3 4.5km/2¾ milesGo through gate, cross

narrow lane to climb stile,

breathtaking views of the Cairngorms from here. Turn L, descend path west then climb steadily north-west onto Creagan Gorm, with wonderful views of Monadhliath and Badenoch & Speyside.

3 3km/2 milesRetrace steps back to col

but continue east, zig-zagging quite steeply up stony path, to gain Meall a’ Bhuachaille’s 810m summit and stone shelter. The view of Bynack More is particularly appealing.

4 4.3km/2¾ milesPath bears L from summit,

dropping gradually across grassy hillside in north-easterly direction. When path forks take R branch from where steeper descent heads east into Glenmore. Fantastic view of An Lochan Uaine. Eventually descent eases with simple walk reaching Ryvoan Bothy.

5 5.8km/3½ milesTurn R onto Thieves Road,

walk south-west along broad track through Glenmore. Progress is easy with gorgeous glen lined with rowan, birch and Scots pine. At junction bear R, continue past gorgeous

An Lochan Uaine then keep along track for 1.3km to reach metal barrier just before Glenmore Lodge.

6 8.3km/5 milesDo not go around barrier.

Instead turn R onto path, which runs parallel with minor road past Glenmore Lodge. It climbs gradually then descends to road. Turn R, walk along verge but as road bears L keep straight on. Follow track past reindeer exhibition. After crossing side road follow track for final 50m back to start point of walk.

signed ‘Lin’s Aqueduct’. Follow path to where leat is culverted below steep knoll and on through deciduous woodland. Press on crossing stiles/kissing-gates on either side of farm tracks as they pass over the leat on fine stone bridges. Walk railed path where it edges deep drop to River Almond. Beyond, climb steps, R, to lane. Turn L along quiet way, then R to see Union Canal.

4 6.2km/3¾ milesHere feeder stream

emerges to supply canal. Pass under superb Lin’s Aqueduct by taking long flight of steps down to go through tunnel. Ascend similar steps to attain towpath. Turn R to cross magnificent aqueduct, pausing as you go to look far down on the River Almond still rushing on its way to the sea and still foaming over rapids.

5 8.7km/5½ milesCarry on along towpath.

Before next bridge over canal, join farm track to cross bridge. Stroll lane for 1.4km, passing Muirend Cottage, then
