“The Gray Zone”
January is “gym month.” The holiday mirror gives voice to the yearly resolution, “This is the year I get in shape.” So you get a lot of grunting, sweating, and hurting in the first 30 days of the
new year. Yet, professional trainers warn people about the “gray zones.” It’s not the age of life when your brown hair fades into a flavorless gray.
The “gray zone” is where people will expend a little energy to get instant results without hard work. They give a “half-effort.” It’s where no progress is made, and injuries happen. They
don’t go all out to move forward. The Christian “gray zone” is packed with
people. Auditoriums are filled with listeners, and streets are empty with influencers. They sing how much they love Jesus but reject his hard sayings. It is the man who will follow
Jesus wherever but only on his schedule. The gray zone Christian does enough to fit in, look
respectable, and silence his conscience. Jesus never had a gray zone. You followed
wherever He led or fell away. He had no acceptable level of absences. He said, “Follow me.” He had no limits, no disclaimers, and no
vacations. If you don’t want to follow Jesus like that, He doesn’t want you to follow Him at all.
When you open the door to come into the worship assembly, are you entering in God’s
glory or just your “gray zone?”
