McCarthy Machine Shop

Changes are coming to the McCarthy shop

You will need to have a TA with you to work in the machine shop area of McCarthy.

I’ve hired Manrique Rivas to work with Hong

They will make a schedule

Safety

In the assignments you will need to refine the safety documents from last semester.

Then you must follow your safety protocols and all University rules

Hong, Manrique and I will cut a new sacrificial table and secure it to the mobile table

Material must be screwed down to the sacrificial table

Propeller Safety

You MUST wear leather work gloves

You MUST use at servo for the throttle control

You MUST wear safety glasses

You MUST NOT stand in the plane of the spinning prop

You MUST NOT run any engine inside a building

Most Important Things

There is not much time

I only want you to do work that advances your project.

Math is a must. But math and theory will get your plane off the ground.

You absolutely must make design decisions based on theory and be able to talk and write about that theory in a sophisticated wayThe plane you build be the plane in your design

Engineering requirements and constraints are a must.

The SAE Judges will be looking for it

Van CertificationTo get van certified you need to email Andrew Wolfe

You have to re-certify if your were certified last year.

You have to fill out this formhttp://ehs.cua.edu/res/docs/CUA-Driver-Application-Summary-of-FCRA-rights-for-end-user.pdf

Everything is explained at http://pryzbyla.cua.edu/eventplanning/requests/Vancert.cfm

Duct tape and rubber bandsWork to simplify your designs

Your plane doesn’t need a door with hinges and a latch It doesn't need solid walls and shouldn’t be bigger that the stuff its carrying.

A list of all purchased parts, and hyperlinks to data sheets. Be very specific.

Don’t say “motor”, “prop”. Choose the specific part that is needed and give the part number or exact name, determine how much monokote you need and be sure to include that.

A specific list of all tools, bolts and any other hardware with sizes.

Please don’t include anything general. For example “Allen wrench set” or “several screw drivers”. Separate out what you might need from what you do need for each specific bolt, screw or any other particular component.

58

Past Tenths / Future TenthsTask statements should be future tenths statement of what you will do.

The draft final report should only have past tenths statements of what you completed.

And be sure you do not include any speculation

Maybe, should be finished, likelihood

Page 59: ME 442 Senior Project

59

No Late SubmissionsI will not be giving extensions on the design support documents

Please plan ahead and submit on time

60

Writing Issues I have posted my document on writing “Writing issues for engineers”. I consider this a work in progress. Over the course of the semester I will add items to this document.

My Version

Plan what you need to say

Be clear

Be precise

Be specific, not abstract

Get to the point quickly

Focus on the most important things (aerodynamics, structure…)

Skip the little stuff (nuts and bolts,…)
