Interview with a bearIf you thought Togademus was just a lovely toy shop on Poplar Road in Kings Heath, then think again. It is also home to an extraordinary bear whose name just happens to be Togademus too. What a co-incidence!

Togademus the bear is occasionally seen in the shop and whenever he’s there he insists on giving every customer 10% off. If you follow him on Twitter you’ll always know when he’ll be there, or keep a close eye on the shop window where he loves to sit.

We sent along our lead reporter to find out more.

Christmas is a very busy time for a toy shop how do you think you will cope? Oh, the shop is most fun when it’s full of people so we don’t mind at all. It is lovely to see happy children playing with the toys.

What kind of toys do you have on your shelves this year? Proper toys! The kind for children to live with, play with, learn from and enjoy, especially lots of traditional and wooden toys.

The shop looks quite up-market from outside – is it expensive? Not at all. Some of the toys are only £1 and most of the toys that people buy are between £5 and £10. But we do have some really special toys too that cost a bit more.

So, Togademus, is it your shop then? I couldn’t really say that, my family do most of the work.

I see. And can people find out about the shop before arriving? Well there’s the website. It’s www.togademus.co.uk and I know they are always putting photos on there so people can see new toys when they arrive. And it’s got opening times and directions as well.

Cool. So, finally, what are you hoping for this Christmas? Oh I’m easy to please – I just like to see happy faces.

Riverford Organic's recipe of the monthSpiced Celeriac with Lemon (serves 6)By Jane Baxter, Riverford Field Kitchen Taken from the Riverford Farm Cook Book

Ingredients:

• 1 large or 2 small celeriac• 3 tbsp olive oil• a pinch of smoked paprika • a pinch of cayenne pepper• a pinch of ground cinnamon• grated zest of 1 lemon• juice of 1½ lemons • sea salt and freshly ground black pepper

Method

Peel the celeriac, cut into slices 5mm-1cm thick, then cut the slices into long, thin sticks. Heat the oil in a large pan, add the celeriac sticks and fry for about 15 minutes, until slightly browned. At this point sprinkle with the spices, lemon zest and juice and 100ml water. Simmer for about 10 minutes, until the celeriac is just tender. Season to taste, adding more lemon juice if necessary.

Call for volunteer millers at Sarehole Mill Milling stopped at Sarehole Mill in 1919, but restoration work is currently underway with the aim of starting to produce flour once more. The project includes repairs to the roof, repair of the mill machinery and dredging of the mill pond to increase the water supply. In addition the bake-house will be restored to working order. From Easter 2013 we hope to sell stone-ground flour from the mill. However, to be able to do this, we need volunteer millers. Are you interested in becoming a miller at Sarehole Mill? This could be for a couple of afternoons each month, or more, depending on your availability. Full training – theoretical and practical – will be given at the Mill. Training sessions will include some theory and of course ‘hands-on’ experience of running the machinery to produce flour. Training will start in January 2013 and will take place on Saturdays and some weekday evenings.

Priya arrives in Moseley

Have you noticed the new restaurant in Moseley? Well we did and we couldn’t wait for the opportunity to go and sample their culinary delights.

Priya, which opened on St Mary’s Row in August, has been tastefully refurbished to combine contemporary style with a traditional twist.

We went along to check them out on a chilly evening in October and were met with a most warm welcome from the attentive and friendly staff and we had a thoroughly enjoyable evening.

I got there first and sat in the comfortable reception area with some Bombay mix to nibble on while I waited for my other half. It was very calming sitting by the stunning water feature that is set in the wall between the reception area and the restaurant itself.

Then we went through and sat by the window with a good view of the whole restaurant which stretches right through to the back which has access from the pay and display car park. As you walk through Priya there are different areas which are decorated uniquely giving it a fresh feel and creating natural rooms within rooms. To the rear they are able to accommodate larger parties without separating them completely.

The menu has a good range of Indian and Bangladeshi inspired dishes with a number of specials developed by the restaurant owner Paul Mazumder and his chef that you will not find

on any other menu. Priya also have a gorgeous children’s menu which is the perfect way to help introduce your little ones to Indian food.

Priya is licensed which I always find refreshing - and we had a nice dry white wine (me) and pint of Cobra (him) to accompany our food.

After lovely crisp popadoms with home-made relishes we shared our starters of Sag Paneer (from the side dish section) and Tandoori Chicken which arrived sizzling on a hot platter. They were beautifully presented and tasted fantastic too.

For main course we had Priya’s Tawa Chicken – served in a sizzler cooked with onion, garlic, ginger and garam massalla, and the Lamb Rogan Josh, a medium spicy dish with onions and tomatoes, and pilau rice and plain nan on the side. The meal was really tasty,

we thoroughly enjoyed every mouthful and will definitely be going back again.

Priya is open Monday to Sunday from 5.30pm to 11.30pm. They also have a takeaway menu and cater for larger groups of up to 25 people.

How Shorter Days Can Impact Your VisionNow that we have turned the clocks back the days will start to get shorter, reducing daylight hours and plunging us into darkness.

For people around 40 years old, the lack of natural daylight may start to seriously impact their vision as they experience difficulty in focusing close-up tasks like applying make-up, shaving or reading a menu or newspaper more challenging.

This natural condition is called presbyopia, and with more than 26 million people in the UK over the age of 45 (Population ageing statistics 2010), more and more people are experiencing this frustrating condition every day, but many do not realise that reading glasses are not their only option. In addition, according to the Office for National Statistics report in April 2012, it’s expected that by 2030 the life expectancy for both sexes will reach 87, meaning that many people may find that they spend more time presbyopic than not!

Difficulty in focusing on objects close-up may be a sign of presbyopia, a condition that starts that will ultimately affect everyone. This problem escalates as the days get shorter and opticians report that they diagnose more patients with presbyopia during this time of year as darker evenings draw in. When faced with presbyopia, many assume that reading or varifocal glasses are their only options, but in fact other options are available.

Research amongst patients with presbyopia found that 82% of people cited reading small print on packages, labels and in newspapers and magazines made them frustrated and strained and a third said the same of using a computer. And with over two thirds of presbyopes agreeing that they feel self-conscious about needing vision correction, it is important that they realise the vision correction options available to them.

Mukesh Pabari from Pabari opticians comments “Many people don’t realise the contributing factors to presbyopia such as dim lighting become more apparent during the autumn and winter months as the evenings start drawing in. After we turn the clocks back, I typically see lots of new patients who struggle with seeing things close up. They may have been able to cope during the spring and summer – but in the absence of natural sun light, they have a lot of difficulty and come to me for help.”

John Gage Exhibition: Birmingham BuildingsAn exhibition of John Gage drawings is being held at Moseley Exchange throughout November and December.

John has been drawing and painting since childhood, specialising in pencil sketches, watercolour and acrylic. John trained as an architect, and so is fascinated with buildings in particular.

In this exhibition John has captured a range of Birmingham architecture and landmarks, from iconic modern buildings such as Selfridges through to the civic grandeur of the Council House. He has also included new arrivals to Birmingham such as the

The Moseley Christmas Crawl

The crawl involves visiting the businesses taking part and having your leaflet stamped (no purchase is necessary). When you have visited all the participating businesses you will be entered into the free prize draw.

A very Moseley ChristmasChristmas festivities in Moseley will get off to a flying start on Saturday 24 November with the official switch-on for the Moseley Christmas Lights.

And the newly formed Moseley Village Business Partnership has worked hard to organise a number of activities for Moseley residents and those visiting the village that day.

The award winning farmers’ market will finish at 3.00pm which is when the festivities for the switch-on will begin.

The Salvation Army Choir will get everybody in the Christmas spirit with carol singing and you will be able to see real live reindeers. Bring your family along and feel free to take pictures of your loved ones with the reindeers. There is no charge for this as a number of Moseley businesses have sponsored this event.

The Lions Club of Birmingham Moseley and Kingsheath will be in Moseley with their Float and St Mary’s church is joining in with a special Christmas Bell Ringing –

Dignity in dementia

Behind the beautiful and slightly grand façade of Sunrise Senior Living in Edgbaston you might simply assume there lays an efficient, high quality care home.

You would be right to think high quality and efficient, but in reality this care home is much more. It has been designed to be as homely and comforting as possible. And the “Reminiscence” neighbourhood, which is where the residents with dementia live, is a home from home even down to the friendly dog Zack along with a budgie and tropical fish.

As you walk around the spacious communal areas there are four life skills centres that are designed to remind people of the happy times that they often go back to when living with dementia. So there is a 1930’s office with antique furniture and typewriter, a nursery corner with a cot and a number of baby dolls & clothing,

there is a work station with tools and a dressing table with make-up, perfume, scarves and jewellery, ties and cufflinks.

There is also a “Snoezelen” Room- an innovative area with lights, sounds and objects that have proven to create a calm and pleasant retreat from the busier activity areas.

The residents each have their own private en suite room with their memory box outside but much of the space is communal and there is always 30s and 40s music playing in the background. For some fresh air they can enjoy the beautiful terrace which overlooks a little bit of inner city countryside. There is also a

herb garden and flowers to attend to for those residents with green fingers.

Every Friday afternoon there is a social get-together for the whole community with a musician, singer or group. Residents and staff enjoy these together and people can sing along, dance, or just soak up the fun with a cup of tea and a piece of home made cake.

Residents are encouraged to help out in the family kitchen area, as many, particularly the ladies, slip back to a time when they spent many an hour preparing meals for their families. So peeling potatoes, laying tables and washing up bring a sense of calm purpose to their day.

The specially trained carers form rich relationships with residents and their families by getting to know them in every detail- from what time they like to wake up to favourite meals and activities. The neighbourhood is small and cosy which leads to a feeling of warm homeliness.

If you have a parent, family member or neighbour who is diagnosed with dementia you are immediately faced with a number of very difficult choices. And you may be under the impression that a place like Sunrise is out of your reach financially. But in fact it is surprisingly affordable… just ask.
