accurate record of the previous AGM proceedings. proposed: Peter Barnes, seconded: Graham Trunks, election: unanimous

5) Matters arising from the minutes: None raised

6) Reports from DA Officers

6a) Welna Bowden: our newly elected National Councillor was present at the meeting. She was warmly welcomed and invited to introduce herself to us.

6b) Secretary (Mike Wigley): Our various sections have been busy as usual during the year.

Bury CTC attracted 71 riders for their Charlie Westlake event, raising £403 for Bury Hospice as well

as giving CTC members an early chance of earning points for the CTC Tourist Competition. Peak Audax had another eventful year as one of Audax UK’s most successful CTC clubs. They just

missed out on the Audax CTC team award which they won in 2009 but will probably retain the CTC Organisers’s Trophy.

West Manchester keep on with their weekly club runs together with various Reliability Trials and

competitive events, which sound to be good fun. Of course, I recognise that there are many more CTC members out there, not involved directly with

CTC activities, but still riding with one of the many clubs in the Manchester area who welcome CTC members. There will also be many other CTC members commuting, popping down to the shops, or

on leisure rides with small groups of friends.

6c) Treasurer (Terry Hodges): The 2009 – 2010 year end Manchester & District CTC accounts consist

of data obtained from 5 different sources - Bury CTC, West Manchester CTC, Northern Wheel Magazine, Oldham & Tameside CTC & Manchester & District CTC account.

Total combined DA assets over liabilities at 30th September 2010 = £6569.35p (This figure is down

⇓⇓⇓⇓ 9% on 2009 year end accounts)

The sum of £6569.35p includes a loan made to CTC Headquarters for £1952.92p.

In summary -

Bury CTC’s year end figures = £102.58p (No change from previous year)

Oldham & Tameside CTC’s year end figures = £2671.75p (This figure is down ⇓⇓⇓⇓ 3% on 2009 year

end accounts )

West Manchester CTC’s year end figures = £550.85p (No change from previous year)

Northern Wheel Magazine’s year end figures = £719.24p (This figure is down ⇓⇓⇓⇓ 48% on 2009 year

end accounts)

Manchester & District CTC year end accounts = £572.01p (This figure is up ⇑⇑⇑⇑ 20% on 2009 year

end accounts)

Page 2: M&D AGM minutes 2010

During April 2010 Manchester & District CTC received a grant of £270.00p from Headquarters.

Sincere thanks go to all the local section treasurers & auditors who have helped me collate this years accounts.

6d) Magazine Editor (Graham Trunks): Graham is stepping down as Editor after 26 years. Peter

Bond (not present) expressed his appreciation to all involved with Northern Wheel, it was a great

magazine and it helped to keep him going when he was on his back for several months with disc trouble (presumably his back not one of his wheels).

There are a couple of interested parties so we are hopeful that we may still have a Newsletter to send out before too long.

There is £786.74 in the bank and no bills anticipated. Our President (Lawrie Green) thanked Graham for his efforts and presented him with a glass rose

bowl as a memento and a token of our appreciation.

6e) Magazine Distributor (Peter Barnes):

6f) Membership Registration Officer (Mike Wigley) 1654 members at 04/10/2010 - at 20/01/2010 we had 1537, so that’s an increase of 117

My intention would be to contact and welcome all new CTC members in our area, but while we haven’t

got a Northern Wheel I haven’t done so ... but see my next report below.

Page 3: M&D AGM minutes 2010

6g) Website Administrator (Mike Wigley):

In the absence of Northern Wheel I intend to include some notes on how to take up cycling in the Manchester area, from why we should cycle, where, with whom and what you need. See

www.ManchesterCTC.co.uk. And please let me know if you see anything wrong or missing. I hope to welcome all new members by email and introduce them to the website.

6h) Peak Audax Secretary (Mike Wigley): We ran 36 events throughout the year with a total of 1308 entries. There were more than two

hundred on the “Spring in the Peak” rides from Hathersage. In contrast, we had 5 for the Winter Solstice. In fairness, we had received a record 100 entries but the Sunday before Christmas was the

start of the prolonged cold spell and only the hardy – or perhaps fool-hardy – ventured out. We reran these events on the last Sunday of January, only to be hit by a repeat of the snow and ice. This time

15 started out, 8 finished, 6 abandoned and 1 ended up in Macclesfield A&E – but he’s OK now!

Peak Audax administers the Randonneur Round the Year award, encouraging cyclists to complete a 200km Audax ride in each of any consecutive 12 months, and there are now 258 claimants. We

relaxed the rules this winter, not without some controversy, allowing claimants to skip January and ride two qualifiers in February, simply because we didn’t want to encourage long-distance leisure

cycling on unsafe roads.

Sheila Simpson ran her usual Super Randonneur series (events at 200km, 300km, 400km and 600km). One of our regular Peak Audax riders, Derek Heine, ended his 600 in Hereford hospital, a victim of a

hit and run incident on the Saturday afternoon near Builth Wells. It will be 2011 before Derek is able to return to work but we are hoping he makes a full recovery and gets back on his bike. The

perpetrators have as yet not been identified but at least the CTC insurers are confident that Derek will be eligible for compensation.

It’s Paris-Brest-Paris again in 2011, a 1200km ride in 90 hours that requires an SR series as qualifying

rides. Sheila will once again be running her SR series, with Mike also putting on the new events, Montgomery 300, the Llanfair 400 and the Holland 600. Sheila will be out to extend her record of PBP

rides to 8. The 2010 season hasn’t quite finished but it looks as if we will not retain Audax UK’s CTC club trophy

from 2009, just beaten by South Bucks CTC. (This is awarded to the CTC club team of 6 riders

accruing most points for riding Audax events). However, Peak Audax ought to hold onto the CTC Organisers’s trophy, earned by the CTC club attracting most riders to its events. Fingers crossed, and

well done to our Organisers, Peter Hammond, Sheila Simpson, David Darricott, Mike Wigley, Dave Colley, Norbert Gajda, Oliver Wright, Dan Webb, Dave Catlow, Don Black, Derek Heine, Chris Keeling-

Roberts, Gerry Goldsmith and John Perrin. And of course, thanks to all the riders who keep turning

up to ride our events.

6i) Bury (Steve Willetts): As ever we have a small band of dedicated cyclists who turn out every Sunday whatever the weather to support our clubruns.

A cloudless, bright but very cold early Sunday morning attracted a good turnout of 71 riders to participate in the 9th annual Charlie Westlake Sportive bike rides on 7th March. 43 cyclists opted

for the 50km route and 28 for the 100km route. Compared to last year’s event the weather was ideal

with very little wind and a gradual increase in the temperature. Frank Jefferson manning the first control near Belmont reservoir did a great job in checking through all 71 riders from only 45 minutes

into the event. Peter Roscoe at the second control at the Britannia roundabout had to ensure that riders departed in the right direction as it is here that the 100km riders go one way towards Blackburn

and the 50km riders go another towards Haslingden.

The 100km riders arriving in Downham were greeted and checked through by Mark Cranshaw. At Waterfoot, Jim Holden and Roy Turner interrupted their drinking at the Duke of Buccleugh pub to

check through the 100km riders at their last control before the finish at Owd Betts. At around noon the first of the 50km riders started arriving at the Owd Betts finish to be checked in

by John Butterworth - soon to be joined by Phil and Vera Rigby. It was 4.30pm by the time the last of the 100km riders had been checked in – all finishing within the 7 hours allowed.

Many riders have their own tales of punctures and going off course but all enjoyed the wonderful

scenery that the route provided. Only a few failed to make the finish. Thanks to entry fees and contributions from the riders we managed to raise £403 for Bury Hospice.

Page 4: M&D AGM minutes 2010

During the year members visited Grinton YH for the Easter tour, Verdun for the Semaine Federale in

France, York Rally and Mildenhall Rally. Three members entered the Northern Dales 202k Audax starting at Arnside YH and going over Tan Hill but two had to abandon in bizarre circumstances

leaving only your writer to successfully complete the event. A and B runs continue to be supported throughout the year and some of the A runs are adventurous

to say the least with Hawes, Elton (Staffordshire), Beeston Castle, Lancaster and many other distant

destinations appearing on the list. The B runs can still be a long distance but tend to be run at a steady pace and to be more sociable.

The Christmas Lunch Ride to the Shepherd’s Rest at Lumbutts was abandoned due to heavy snow on the day but some members managed to celebrate by walking to local pubs.

Bury CTC member Adam Bentley completed a London to Paris sponsored bike ride in aid of the Bradford burns unit as he was a witness to the fire at Bradford City’s Valley Parade ground in 1985.

The Section got a mention in Cycling Weekly during the year which mentions our very informative

website which is maintained by Chairman John Butterworth.

6j) West Manchester (Ian Ross): We have had on average 8 riders out on Sunday runs and completed 50 in 4, 100 in 8, 150 in 12 and 8,000 feet reliability rides. Also we have run Hare and

Hounds, Speed judging, Freewheel and Hill climb competitions which all count towards a season-long

Best All Rounder competition. Our annual dinner and prize presentation was held in January at the Monton House Hotel, with 50

members and friends present. West Manchester again successfully organised the Beard Cup hill climb and will be holding it again on

Sunday 4 September 2011. Members have had cycling holidays in Majorca, Menorca, mainland Spain, French Alps, Italian Lakes

and Dumfries and Galloway.

There was a query about whether the Beard Cup could be run on a later date. Ian was absent from the meeting, so was unable to comment, but the date of the event is dependent on when other

similar events are also taking place; if Blackburn CTC can’t attend then we lose a good proprtio9n of the field (but at least another club would then have a chance!)

6k) Oldham & Tameside (Kathleen Collins): There wasn’t a formal report from O&T as there AGM is not to be held until 12th Nov but Dave gave a short report: They have had trips to Belgium and the

Orkneys during the year. Dave gave the observation that few new cyclists are willing to be out all day on a club run. Dave has been in touch with Kevin Mayne regarding membership lists which were

empty – this has now been resolved. (Mike receives the membership lists for Manchester & District

CTC so can share this information with the relevant Member Groups, but only for legitimate club activities of course).

The Group attends Cycling Forums at both Tameside and Oldham councils, although funding is doubtful for cycling matters at present. We celebrated a new Toucan Crossing which it took Tameside

7 years to install.

6l) Bolton: no report

7) Election of Honorary DA Officials

7a) Re-elected Officers: There were no nominations for the following positions, but the existing officers

have agreed to stand for a further year do we have a proposal to re-elect all en bloc?

proposed: Eileen Green, seconded: John Butterworth, election: unanimous

President: Laurie Green Vice President: Ian Ross

Chair: Phil Rigby Secretary: Mike Wigley

Treasurer: Terry Hodges

Magazine Distributor: Peter Barnes

Membership Registration Officer: Mike Wigley Welfare Officer: Laurie Green

Auditor: Rod Whitworth Peak Audax Secretary: Mike Wigley

Website Adminstrator: Mike Wigley

Page 5: M&D AGM minutes 2010

7b) Magazine Editor:

No nominations but a couple of interested parties so we may co-opt someone to this position during the year

8) Northern Wheel

At our 2005 AGM in the Rope and Anchor, we resolved that “Northern Wheel should be run by a

separate Committee, consisting of the Magazine Editor, the DA chairman and the DA Vice President, to take full control of the production and sale of the magazine, to present quarterly accounts to the DA

committee, to receive a one-off sum of £1000 from the DA accounts but to otherwise be self-financing.”

With the resignation of Graham Trunks as Magazine Editor, control of Northern Wheel (or its replacement) ought to come back under the control of the main committee, at least until we have a

new editor in post and well established. We therefore have a motion to:

• we rescind the Northern Wheel committee (consisting of Graham and the Chairman and Vice

President of Manchester DA, as set up at AGM 2005) and that publications of Manchester & District CTC should revert to the full control of the committee

• the funds in the Northern Wheel account should revert back into M&D CTC accounts, to be reserved

for a period of at least five years, in due course to send future copies of a “new” Northern Wheel to those with outstanding subscriptions, or to refund outstanding subscribers on request.

• proposed: Phil Rigby, seconded: Vera Rigby, election: unanimous

9) Any other business A notice that on Thursday October 21st there will be a showing of the film “Chasing Legends” at the

Printworks Cinema. The film shows the Tour de France through the eyes of HTC-Columbia, who delivered Mark Cavendish to six stage victories. The 94 minute film is narrated by Phil Liggett and

features a cast of the sport's most celebrated heroes, from Eddy Merckx to Lance Armstrong. A live Q&A with Cavendish, Liggett and director Jason Berry will be beamed via satellite from London's O2

Cineworld to all cinemas after the film.

Pedal Power – from a Marsden based theatre group, presented at the Railway in Greenfield

Following this meeting there will be the opportunity to carry on discussion over a Chinese buffet meal

at the Peking Court

9) Future Events and Activities from Manchester & District CTC:

Riders are referred to our CTC Tourist Competition rides and the Peak Audax events, as listed in Northern Wheel, Cycle magazine, and on www.ManchesterCTC.co.uk. Of particular note:

6th March: Charlie Westlake and Walter Pilkington rides from Bury 4th Sept: Beard Cup

See the Peak Audax website for a whole load of challenge rides

10) Date and venue of next meeting

Thursday 10th March at Welcome Inn (provisional - see www.ManchesterCTC.co.uk for confirmation)

11) Any other business:

Mike wondered whether anyone knew of any bike introduction course run in the Manchester Area.

The separate Member Groups welcome novice riders and will help them with basic maintenance such as mending punctures, and where and how to ride on the roads.

Manchester & District CTC are entitled to apply for a grant from National Office based on the nu8mber of members. It was agreed that we should apply for our full entitlement which will fund our meetings

and communication with new members.

Meeting closed at 16:00
